Thanks. So that‡ works on my Windows gaming laptop with Chrome, but not (with the same FIDO2 token) with Firefox including on any of my Linux systems (I don't run Chrome on Linux so did not test). Plenty of work to be done there apparently. Good to know.

‡ Referring to "Go usernameless too" which is the mode where a PIN is needed. All the other modes are just plain FIDO and don't need any further verification, and they work just fine on all my systems with any of my tokens.

Parent might mean export templates. Godot has export templates to build games for iOS, Android, Windows, Linux, macOs, and HTML5. But there are also third-party companies that offer export templates for PS4, Xbox One, and Switch.

I /presume/ that no Linux desktop setups today actually support this workflow for user login, which is one of the things touted for Windows.

For Firefox since they advertise support for WebAuthn I /presume/ that the browser will do all the PIN prompts and so on to make this work, but again I have never seen this even _demonstrated_ let alone used in anger. The browser feature doesn't help you if the PC has booted and is at the login screen though, no browser there (yet?).

I own a device (Yubico's own "Security Key 2") which supports this workflow and I've played with it on a demo Windows setup, and though I'd probably never use it to sign into my Linux PCs I'd try it out because I'm a nerd. This device works fine as a FIDO key for my WebAuthn accounts and is enrolled at GitHub etcetera for that purpose but then so does my much cheaper Key-ID FIDO key.

Edited to add: There are a couple of replies now talking about non-FIDO flows like Smartcards or whatever. Some of Yubico's other devices can do these, but we're talking about FIDO2 like this new Yubikey, those flows aren't relevant.

This is a FIDO2 device.

It's actually easier to support this in Linux than a "conventional" PIN-based FIDO2 token because the Linux system doesn't need to arrange to read a PIN from the user and send that to the token, the token is going to read the user's fingerprint instead.

If you just want a second factor, it'll work like an old FIDO device, which you might be familiar with for U2F - everything is already in place, loads of people are doing this including with Yubico's existing FIDO2 (pin-based) product.

If you want this to be the sole factor (as in the Windows demos or for a site where the convenience of one touch login is good but you don't need MFA security) that ought to work with WebAuthn out of the box, but I actually haven't seen a demo, so I can't say this from personal experience even though I own a FIDO2 token.

New comment by CoolGuySteve in "Ask HN: How do you make sure your servers are up as a single founder?"

Cache

I currently run a batch of trading servers solo. The trading system is a C++ process with an asynchronous logger that prints log levels and times. One of the issues with trading is that you're dependent on your datafeed and exchange connections working which is out of your control.

I use a python monitoring script that tails logs watching for ALERT level log lines and constant order activity combined with a cron watchjob to ensure the process is alive during trading hours. The exception handler in the monitoring script sends alerts if the script itself dies.

If there are any issues I use twilio to text me the exception text/log line. I also use AWS SES to email myself but getting gmail to permanently not block SES is a pain in the ass. By design Twilio + AWS SES are the only external dependencies I have for the monitoring system (too bad SES sucks).

On my phone I have Termius SSH setup so I can log in and check/fix things. I have a bunch of short aliases in my .profile on the trading server to do the most common stuff so that I can type them easily from my phone.

I also do all my work through a compressed SSH tmux including editing and compiling code. So if things get hairy I can pair my phone with my laptop, attach to the tmux right where I left off, and fix things over even a 3G connection.

This compressed SSH trick is a huge quality of life improvement compared to previous finance jobs I've worked where they use Windows + Citrix/RDP just to launch a Putty session into a Linux machine. It's almost like finance IT has never actually had to fix anything while away from work.

I think the concern is how would you tell the key that you want to enroll a fingerprint with it? On Windows, you'd use Windows software, but Linux has no such biometric management software as far as I know.

When Should You Replace Your Free SIEM Tools?

Cache

Undefined

Free Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) solutions have significant benefits, providing visibility into security environments and enabling proactive vulnerability management for many small and mid-sized organizations. However, these tools often come with limitations that will lead security teams to consider commercial options. How do you know when it’s time to upgrade?

When your organization expands

Growth is one of the first indicators that you need to migrate to a commercial SIEM tool. Freeware may have limited functionality that worked when you were first starting up, but you may find the benefits offered in an enterprise version are better suited for your organization as it grows. Alternately, freeware may offer full functionality for a limited number of assets. As an organization grows, the number of devices and applications naturally increases. Since a SIEM is strongest when it’s centralizing everything in the environment, outgrowing the freeware is a good indicator that you’re ready for the full commercial version.

When you're ready for support

While free SIEM tools have their benefits, they usually offer only documentation for support. It may take a bit longer to get up to speed, but once you've gotten comfortable with the SIEM solution, this will typically not be a problem. But any more complex questions or issues will go unanswered or take much longer to solve without the assistance of support personnel who are skilled specialists on the product. Good support resources provide stability, vital expertise, and peace of mind that can be as valuable as the product itself.

Open source tools may not even have official support people or documentation, so support options have to be found elsewhere—through forums or from other open source users. Additionally, while open source SIEM solutions allow you to develop them further, customizing a SIEM tool so extensively is quite the undertaking. If you have someone maintaining and continuing to develop custom coding, this is a large investment in terms of time and skills, so open source can’t really be considered free.

Finding the right commercial SIEM software

If your organization is facing any of these issues, it might be time to migrate to a paid SIEM solution. Commercial tools can easily scale, streamline troubleshooting, and get the support you need when you need it.

A majority of SIEM tools are intended for huge organizations, with many more features than a small to mid-sized organization wants, and a price point that is far out of range. Thankfully, there are mid-range SIEM solutions that are intuitive to use and provide better value than some of the heavy-weight options—while still providing all the critical functionality you need as a growing business.

When you're looking for a tool, make sure you find one that offers:

  • Real-time monitoring: The sooner you can see a threat, the sooner you can eliminate it. Real time monitoring allows you to investigate and begin remediation quickly.
  • Tailored prioritization and escalation: Threat prioritization saves security teams from having to sort out critical threats from the mundane. The ability to fine tune what constitutes a real threat for each asset creates an even more effective filter.
  • The ability to monitor every type of device: For maximum effectiveness, your SIEM should be able to easily monitor any type of data, be it a standard operating system like Windows or a customized feed like a legacy application or homegrown database.
  • Data normalization: With so many types of applications and devices whose data is streamed through a SIEM, the language and formatting of the log information can vary broadly. Normalizing this data it into a common format and giving it meaning streamlines the process considerably.
  • Integrations: Every organization requires multiple security solutions, so the ability to integrate data from other enterprise applications, like antivirus software, saves time and provides a holistic picture of your environment.
  • Long term event storage: Compliance and analysis may require long term storage of data. An effective SIEM allows you to specify exactly what types of data you want to store, excluding data that you know is harmless.
  • Reporting capabilities: Logging all event and incident response activity not only provides valuable performance data, it also proves adherence to multiple industry standards and regulations to inquiring auditors.

In addition to finding the right features and doing a SIEM pricing comparison, other factors should be taken into account, like licensing models or deployment methods. It’s helpful to develop a requirements checklist to evaluate the various offerings on the market and how they line up with what you need. The right SIEM solution will centralize your security, and as your organization continues to grow, this will provide stability for your security team, keeping your infrastructure safe through every transition.

Ubuntu: Focal Fossa, Newsletter, and Poll

  • Early F-Cycle Adventuring

This blog does recount my misadventures in using computers. I had not intended to so quickly get back into testing. After several frustrating failures in trying to upgrade to 19.10 that left me with a system that refused to boot I chose to take a risk.

After many multiple failed upgrade attempts as well as a failed attempt to install something completely different I was about to settle for just using the Windows Subsystem for Linux under Windows 10 1903. The problems is that Windows 10 just feels so utterly slow to me compared to Xubuntu or even Ubuntu MATE. This may come from having to use very unmaintained computers for almost six years in a government job that ran very old versions of Microsoft Windows that were very behind the rest of the world.

Considering all that I decided to push forward. I got Focal Fossa installed on my laptop and it is working for the time being.

CVE-2019-0708: BlueKeep Exploited in the Wild to Deliver Cryptocurrency Miner

Cache

Researchers identify the first in-the-wild exploit of the BlueKeep vulnerability nearly six months after it was disclosed.

Background

On November 2, security researchers Kevin Beaumont (@GossiTheDog) and Marcus Hutchins (@MalwareTechBlog) confirmed the first in-the-wild exploitation of CVE-2019-0708, also known as BlueKeep.

Analysis

CVE-2019-0708, a critical remote code execution vulnerability in Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Services, was patched back in May 2019. The vulnerability raised eyebrows, particularly because Microsoft released security updates for out-of-support versions of Windows, in an effort to thwart a potential worm that could spread just as WannaCry did in 2017. Beaumont is credited with naming the vulnerability “BlueKeep,” inspired by Game of Thrones. He subsequently set up BlueKeep honeypots to keep tabs on global attempts to exploit the flaw in-the-wild.

This weekend, Beaumont observed blue screens of death (BSODs) for his BlueKeep honeypots starting on November 2.

Beaumont shared a kernel crash dump from his honeypots with Hutchins, who confirmed this as the first exploitation of BlueKeep in the wild.

Hutchins shared his analysis in a blog post, where he identified the attackers were utilizing a recently released exploit module to distribute a cryptocurrency (or “coin”) miner, dubbed “BlueKeep Monero Miner” which is detected by 44% of scanners on VirusTotal as of November 3. Beaumont shared his insights in a blog post as well.

Though it took several months for the first in-the-wild exploit of BlueKeep to be seen, the expectation has always been there. Back in July, a cryptocurrency mining botnet known as WatchBog incorporated a BlueKeep scanning module to identify vulnerable systems. In August, there was chatter that a BlueKeep exploit would be incorporated into open-source tools.

While this in-the-wild exploit isn’t a WannaCry-level event, it serves as a cautionary reminder that organizations with vulnerable systems should prioritize patching them immediately.

Solution

Tenable recommends applying patches immediately. The following table contains the relevant security updates and monthly rollups for various products.

Security Update Products
4499175 (Security Only)
4499164 (Monthly Rollup)
Windows 7 32-bit (Service Pack 1) Windows 7 x64 (Service Pack 1) Windows Server 2008 R2 for Itanium-Based Systems Service Pack 1 Windows Server 2008 R2 for x64-based Systems Service Pack 1 Windows Server 2008 R2 for x64-based Systems Service Pack 1 (Server Core installation)

In addition to patching, Tenable recommends the following mitigation steps:

  • Enable Network Level Authentication (NLA). Microsoft recommends NLA as a mitigation, however, NLA may be something an organization chooses to deploy in addition to patching.
  • Block RDP (Default is TCP port 3389) at your perimeter firewall.
  • Disable any unused services.
  • Upgrade end-of-life (EOL) operating systems. As a reminder, Windows 7 goes EOL on January 14, 2020.

Identifying affected systems

Tenable released a remote check plugin for CVE-2019-0708 after Microsoft disclosed the vulnerability. This plugin can identify affected systems without providing credentials.

To identify systems that do not have NLA enabled, please use plugin 58453.

34,95€ - OTTO
Hallo zusammen,

keine Angst - kein Otto-Neukundendeal (y)

  • Audioprozessor Creative E-MU
  • Rauschabstand 106dB
  • Plattform PC - PCI-e x1

Top 5 takeaways for developers from Microsoft Ignite 2019

Cache

Microsoft’s annual Ignite conference has usually catered to IT professionals, with a focus on servers, applications, and management tooling. That’s not the case this year, with developers getting a much larger slice of the pie.

It’s not surprising, really. Microsoft’s transition to cloud behemoth is almost complete, and the modern hybrid cloud needs code that can take advantage of Azure’s hyper-scale platform. There were so many developer announcements that they ended up getting their own separate keynotes, one for Azure and one that brought Windows and Office together under the umbrella of Microsoft 365.

What were the biggest announcements for developers at Microsoft Ignite 2019? I’ll explore the top five below.

New York is in the mother f--king house!

It's hard to believe that it's been more than 10 years since Tiffany "New York" Pollard graced the small screen on her hit reality show I Love New York.

But even a decade later, fans can't help but follow the iconic reality TV star who first appeared on Flavor of Love to win over Flavor Flav's heart.

During an exclusive sit-down interview for E! News' digital series Just the Sip, Justin Sylvester had to get the tea from the beloved TV star. Let's just say New York came to play.

"I'm a diamond honey and there's so many facets to me," she explained to us. "I say New York is my sassy side, my edgy, punched up self if you will. Tiffany is a little bit more cooler. I'm a nerd. I'm a tomboy. I sit at home and watch black and white movies."

When appearing on Flavor of Love, New York says she was absolutely attracted to the rapper.

"Honestly, with me. It's always personality first. I don't care what you look like," she explained. "As long as your personality is at a 10, that's so attractive to me."

But when she appeared on her own show, New York couldn't help but be blown away by some of the eligible bachelors.

"I've had some nights with [Chance] outside of the show. But you want to know who was really, really good? Buddha!" New York shared when revealing the best lover. "He's the one who climbed through my damn window. He was a pleaser too. He wanted to do everything. He pleasured me so well."

Climbing windows? Oh yes, let us explain.

When it was time for bed and cameras stopped rolling, some contestants tried to spend some quality alone time with New York.

"They were climbing through my windows at night. When the producers go home, they would climb through my windows," she confessed. "I'm like, 'Damn! They're already in here.' Pandora's box is open."

When asked about her current relationship status, New York tried her best to stay mum. And even though she didn't find everlasting love with a Vh1 star, the self-proclaimed HBIC is more than hopeful that she'll have a happy ending.

"He's floating around but until I have that rock on my hand, I'm single. Yah, I said it," she shared. "I'm looking for someone that can add to this complete masterpiece."

The five best Brutalist buildings in the District

Cache

We published this post on April 13, 2017. We’re sharing it again for a fun read over the weekend.

When Metro began painting the interior of one of its original stations in 2017, the ensuing uproar shone a spotlight on how unpainted concrete surfaces are a part of the area’s architectural heritage. Metro was just one part of a building boom that swept Washington in the 1960s and 1970s, leaving DC with a substantial legacy of Brutalist structures that celebrate the geometry and texture of raw concrete. This post highlights five buildings that combine the Brutalist style with a human scale.

Perhaps Brutalist architecture never got a fair chance because of a false cognate. The public has long misunderstood this least lovable of architectural styles, but several local buildings show that even Brutalism can be beautiful.

In English, “brutal” architecture sounds harsh and cruel. Yet the term originated in French, where “brut” means wild, rough, or unfinished: “brut” Champagnes haven’t been sweetened with added sugar.

Le Corbusier, the controversial Modernist architect, marveled at how reinforced concrete combined steel’s flexibility with concrete’s rigidity. Reinforced concrete could leap in organic curves and span vast distances without support; it could be cast into novel shapes and its surface raked with three-dimensional textures. Corbusier left his concrete structures “brut,” thus inspiring “Brutalism.”

“It does no good to pretend that Brutalist buildings are easy to like, or that everyone can be convinced to like them,” writes New Yorker critic Paul Goldberger. “But ease and user-friendliness are not the only architectural virtues…. The earnestness of the best Brutalism—the belief in the power of architecture that it represents—continues to be inspiring.”

Brutalism’s brash idealism—its emphasis on big and bold shapes, honest use of mass-produced materials, and rejection of elitist finery—combined with its (yes) low costs to make an irresistible choice for its era’s expanding government bureaucracies. Brutalism was “authoritatively civic in the time of Kennedy-era optimism and the Great Society, before US attitudes toward the public realm changed so dramatically that it has become hard to evaluate the aesthetics on their original terms,” write Michael Kubo, Mark Pasnik, and Chris Grimley.

The results surround us here in Washington, where Brutalist buildings house Great Society legacies like HHS and HUD, plus the university libraries of Georgetown and George Washington. Few will mourn other infamous local examples of Brutalism, like the FBI headquarters or the now-demolished Third Church, particularly since they suffer from the clumsy and pedestrian-unfriendly streetscapes common during their era.

But Washington also boasts several buildings that showcase Brutalism’s sculptural and textural possibilities, while also supporting the urban fabric around them.

1. Washington Metro stations, completed in 1976 and onwards by Harry Weese & Associates.

Washington Metro by camera_obscura [busy] licensed under Creative Commons.

Last year, the American Institute of Architects bestowed its 25 Year Award, which goes to an architectural design that has stood the test of time, onto the Metro system.

The “Great Society Subway,” as Zach Schrag‘s landmark book called it, shapes simple concrete into heroic vaults that impart a bit of the capital’s majesty to commutes. The coffered vaults also serve practical purposes, distributing structural loads and keeping sightlines open.

The book District Comics includes a comic-strip retelling of Metro’s design process by Jim Ottaviani and Nick Sousanis.

2. Federal Home Loan Bank Board and Liberty Plaza (now Consumer Financial Protection Bureau), completed in 1977 by Max O. Urbahn Associates (architect), and Sasaki Associates (landscape architect).

This structure shows that Brutalism can respectfully frame not only a variety of historic buildings but also human-scaled open spaces and the mixed-use street grid. The building shelters a small plaza that is one of the most popular paved plazas downtown.

The Commission of Fine Arts recently panned proposed renovations, saying they “would have the overall effect of transforming noteworthy modernist architecture into a more conventional, contemporary office building.”

3. The American Institute of Architects, completed in 1973 by The Architects Collaborative.

The AIA’s headquarters stand as an elegant, tiered rear scrim for the curious Octagon House, built in 1801 as one of Washington’s grandest private houses. Although it’s hardly visible from the street, the building’s dynamic boomerang curve stands apart in a city filled with acute angles. The yard interposed between the two buildings, split between a hardscaped plaza on the headquarters side and a soft lawn on the house side, creates a quiet, shaded respite from the busy roads in front.

4. Sunderland Building, completed in 1969 by Keyes, Lethbridge & Condon.

Just south of Dupont Circle and behind the Heurich House, this office building is just a bit taller than it is wide, but the pattern of window and door openings lighten what could otherwise have been a plain concrete cube. The windows sit deep behind angled frames that score the facade with a grid of of shadows that subtly change depth from different perspectives, while the top floor’s wide porches keep the façades off-center. The ground floor arcade lifts most of the ponderous concrete mass well above the sidewalk.

5. Brewood Office Building, completed 1974, Wilkes & Faulkner

This tiny townhouse-sized building, a leftover from before the Golden Triangle flowered with hulking office blocks in the 1980s, might inspire a double take. At first glance, the facade’s irregular, flowing texture and drilled “nail holes” read as a wooden structure, but like its high-rise neighbors it’s entirely concrete.

“Board-formed concrete” takes its texture from wood that disappeared years ago—the wooden “formwork” that encased the concrete when it was being poured left its mark, and here, in a hallmark of Brutalism’s attention to process, the architects have celebrated this artifact.

Honorable mentions

In addition to these five buildings, two other buildings garner honorable mentions for being fine examples of Brutalism, although one’s located outside the District and the other had to hide its concrete under limestone panels.

1. Dulles Airport, completed in 1962 by Eero Saarinen.

Dulles Airport by Oren Levine licensed under Creative Commons.

Surely the most striking concrete form in this area is the suspended roofline of Dulles’ soaring terminal. Its roof upends all conventions, dipping inwards with what looks like an unstable curve and inexplicably resting its massive weight upon airy glass walls. Yet this instability subtly reminds us that flight itself is no mean feat of physics. The recessed curtain wall appears like a solid Washingtonian wall of stone columns on the exterior, and on the interior it dissolves into a faceted lens that scatters light throughout the day.

2. Embassy of Canada, completed in 1989 by Arthur Erickson.

Canadian Embassy by F Delventhal licensed under Creative Commons.

Although this building is mostly clad in the federal precinct’s requisite limestone and was completed decades after the others on this list, Erickson has a reputation in his native Canada for sculpting concrete into daring, angular geometries. Here, Erickson allowed unfinished concrete to peek out from underneath the limestone skin in key locations, like this rotunda of columns at the building’s prow.

We’ve come a long way since the seventies, when every city endeavored to build its own version of Boston’s fortress-like City Hall, a structure that only architects love (yes, I love it). This style of architecture was called brutalism, supposedly after Le Corbusier’s beton brut—rough concrete—but the name stuck for other reasons.

It was characterized by walls so abrasive they could rip your arm open. Happily, this technique is no longer in vogue, but many architects, especially the starchitects, still build blank walls where they least belong.

My old professor, the Spaniard Rafael Moneo, is probably the leading blank wall composer, a veritable Copland of Concrete. In his studios, like all of my architecture-school studios, nobody ever talked about how buildings need to give life to the sidewalk.

We did discuss such things as a façade’s thickness and depth—“sickness and death,” in Moneo’s formidable accent—but these were architectonic qualities, not practical ones. Most architecture schools still promote an intellectual and artistic sensibility that has little patience for such mundane questions as whether a building will sustain pedestrian activity.

This issue was the subject of a now famous exchange that took place at the 2009 Aspen Ideas Festival between Frank Gehry and a prominent audience member, Fred Kent. Kent, who runs the Project for Public Spaces, pointedly asked Gehry why so many “iconic” buildings by star architects fail to give life to the streets and sidewalks around them. Gehry, who was once quoted as saying “I don’t do context,” claimed to be above this criticism, but Kent didn’t buy it. I wasn’t there, so we’ll let The Atlantic’s James Fallows tell the rest:

But the questioner asked one more time, and Gehry did something I found simply incredible and unforgettable. “You are a pompous man,” he said—and waved his hand in a dismissive gesture, much as Louis XIV might have used to wave away some offending underling. He was unmistakably shooing or waving the questioner away from the microphone, as an inferior—again, in a gesture hardly ever seen in post-feudal times.

Gehry was clearly having a bad day, but his imperiousness is worth recounting as a metaphor for some of his work—not all, but some. Kent was no doubt recalling his son Ethan’s visit to Gehry’s masterpiece, the Guggenheim Bilbao, an experience he describes in the Project for Public Spaces website’s “Hall of Shame.” After failing to find the front door and taking note of the treeless, depopulated plaza, Ethan observed a mugging, something he later learned was common there. He adds, “In the span of 10 minutes that we spent around the museum, I witnessed the first mugging of my life—and I’ve lived my entire life in New York City.”

Robberies are no longer very common in New York, but the same goes for Bilbao—except for certain problem places. That one of these places enfronts the Guggenheim is partly Gehry’s fault, the outcome of a landscape (more of a landscrape) conceived as a tabula rasa to show off the building to its best effect. Gehry is actually perfectly capable of contributing to attractive, engaging landscapes—as he has done in Chicago’s Millennium Park—but he rarely does so with his buildings, most of which do not reward proximity. His Disney Hall, in Los Angeles, has about 1500 feet of perimeter, perhaps 1000 feet of which is blank wall of the most slippery sort.

But it’s a concert hall, you say… it needs to have blank walls. Well, take a stroll around the Paris Opera, or even Boston’s Symphony Hall, and let’s talk again. These older buildings’ facades are awash in engaging detail, so that even their blank walls don’t feel blank. Walking next to them is a pleasure.

This discussion reminds me of a wonderful set of drawings by Leon Krier, in which he shows two buildings side by side from three different distances. From far away, we can see that one is a classical palace, the other a modernist glass cube. The palace has its base, middle, and top, while the glass cube is articulated with the horizontal and vertical lines of its large, reflective windows.

As we get closer, the palace reveals its doors, windows, and cornice, while the glass cube remains the same as before: horizontal and vertical lines. Zooming in to just a few paces away, we now observe the palace’s decorative string course, window frames, and the rafter-tails supporting the eaves. Our view of the glass cube is unchanged and mute. We have walked a great distance to its front door but received no reward.

Krier presents these drawings as a powerful argument against modernism. But this is not merely a question of style. Any architectural style—except minimalism, I suppose—is capable of providing those medium- and small-scale details that engage people as they approach and walk by.

The high-tech Pompidou Center, by celebrating its mechanical systems on its exterior, gives life to one of the most successful public spaces in Paris. What matters is not whether the details were crafted by a stone carver or a cold extruder, but whether they exist at all. Too many contemporary architects fail to understand this point, or understand it but don’t care.

But a preponderance of human-scaled detail is still not enough if a streetscape lacks variety. However delicate and lovely a building façade, there is little to entice a walker past 500 feet of it. As Jane Jacobs noted, “Almost nobody travels willingly from sameness to sameness and repetition to repetition, even if the physical effort required is trivial.”

Getting the scale of the detail right is only half the battle; what matters even more is getting the scale of the buildings right, so that each block contains as many different buildings as reasonably possible. Only in this way will the pedestrian be rewarded with the continuously unfolding panorama that comes from many hands at work.

This fact seems to be lost on the vast majority of architects, especially the big names, whose unspoken goal is to claim as much territory as possible for their trademarked signature, even if it means a numbingly repetitive streetscape. It is rarely taught in architecture schools, where there persists a deep misunderstanding of the difference between city planning and architecture, such that most urban design projects are seen as an opportunity to create a single humongous building. Design superstars like Rem Koolhaas, in their giddy celebration of “bigness,” have adopted this confusion as doctrine.

To be fair, egotism and the desire for celebrity are only partly responsible for this orientation. It also comes from an insistence on intellectual honesty. Just as a building supposedly bears the obligation to be “of its time,” it must also be “of its author.” For the designer of a large structure to pretend to be many different designers is to falsify the historical record, especially since the modern myth of the genius architect insists that every designer’s personal style is as unique as his fingerprint.

I still remember (how could I not) the critic at my architectural-school thesis final review who said, “I don’t understand: your two buildings seem to have been designed by two different architects.” My fantasy-world response, twenty years after the fact: “Why, thank you, sir.”

Speck’s book came out on November 13. You can order it on Amazon. For more from the book, see also our first and second excerpts. Speck will also be appearing at Politics & Prose this Saturday.

The Dream: You wake up one morning and notice your website a

The Dream: You wake up one morning and notice your website appears on the #1 spot for your chosen keyword. The traffic is enormous
, the business is huge and you are rolling in cash. How? Well...

This will never happen to you or your competitors (luckily) but over time, it is possible for your website to achive top google positions by following a few simple steps which are known as "The Golden 5".

1. Keyword Selection for your website. Example Term: Hosting
The first step to successful SEO is always keyword research. Without it, you are like a bull in a china store. Bob and Jane are a loving couple who own a web hosting business and would like to do much better on google. Bob says they should optimize their site for the word "hosting" because According to Overture there are 1,426
,822 searches bi-monthly for the word this word. Sounds like a lot, but because the competition for hosting is so intense, there is little benefit in its pursuit. Jane then suggests that they pursue the term "windows hosting" since thats what they specialise in. Jane is right, it's better to rank 1st for a more specific term than rank 50th for a generic term. Use to find search terms you feel are atainable.

2. Use your selected keywords in your website.
Use your nich keyword to use anywhere you can. But don't let the keyword density get too high or your site may become over-optimised. 5% is usually okay. Use the keywords intags
, heading tags, etc...

3. Website Relationships
Like the loving couple Jane and Bob, your website needs a loving partner too. It's time to step away from the cheap "link building" campaigns. Google is now looking at how good a link is by calculating how long website visitors stay whilst at a link. It's time to start building solid business relationships with other websites.

4. Content is King!
Write relevant, interesting content for your website. Write some stories
, articles, anything. Try for one new content page a week, more if you have time. Employ someone if you need to. For example, VroomVroomVroom a car rental company employ a journalist to write australian car hire and travel articles. Bob excitedly says to Jane "We should do this!" He is right
, but by no means should you ever plagiarize someone elses work. This could lead to a total exclusion from google. It is easy to prove and not worth the risk. "Don't even think about it!" Jane warns Bob.

5. Use experts for your Hosting, SEO and Relationship building.
A wise entrepreneur once said that their key to success was to "ask questions". That means, don't be afraid to get help. Don't be afraid to use services that can get you to the top. The difficulty is that the Golden 5 steps can only get you so far. There are 1000's of factors that effect your website ranking. Bob and Jane both know that they can't win if they do it alone. Use your instinct when deciding from whom to seek free and paid advice. Bob, Jane and yourself can get started by seeking SEO advise at - a great resource by SEO experts.

Good luck with your website and may the Golden 5 bring your website alive!
