Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, United States of America

Applied Geophysics (Staff or Senior) Scientist – Energy Geosciences Division – 87325
Organization: GO-Energy Geosciences

Berkeley Lab’s Energy Geosciences Division has an immediate opening for a Staff or Senior Scientist in Applied Geophysics.

We are seeking an Applied Geophysicist with a record of leading innovative research in characterizing subsurface structure, and monitoring properties and processes, with a focus on seismology. As a member of the Energy Geosciences Division (EGD) you will lead and participate in leading-edge research in passive and active seismic methodologies, including borehole data acquisition. A successful candidate is expected to lead and expand our historically vibrant and extramurally supported frontier research program in applied seismology with a broad range of support from U.S. DOE programs in geothermal, carbon storage, and oil and gas, as well as external industry funding. Continued focus on developing novel field methods is expected, with an emphasis on permanent reservoir monitoring and time-lapse seismic imaging approaches. Development of novel imaging and inversion methods is encouraged, and internal collaboration with non-seismic methods including electromagnetic acquisition and imaging is also expected.

Currently funded research areas include distributed acoustic sensing (DAS), continuous active-source seismic monitoring (CASSM) using both surface and borehole sources, and advanced microseismic monitoring, as well as the development of new seismic modeling and inversion techniques. Data acquisition research areas utilize dedicated engineering support from LBNL’s Geoscience Measurement Facility which houses extensive resources for novel field seismic acquisition systems, including high-temperature wireline instruments, downhole tools, recording systems, and fiber optics. This is in addition to more traditional geophysical instrumentation, experienced field personnel, and instrument fabrication facilities.

Chopped Liver — 11 June 2018

There's a proverb that goes "Beloved children have many names." That's at least as true when it comes to the names we give our pets. "Fluffy" becomes "Fluffers" becomes "FluffFace" becomes "FlufferNutter, Queen of the Universe." Speaking of the celestial, how DID the top politician in California come to be named Governor Moonbeam, anyway? Blame it on a clever newspaper columnist. And: still more names for those slowpokes in the left-turn lane. Plus munge and kludge, monkey blood and chopped liver, a German word for pout, and the land of the living.

Local authors carving their niche and lighting the way to a Maltese fantasy and sci-fi genre

Cache

Today marks the opening day of the 2019 Malta Book Festival, which kicks off with "Strange New Worlds", a conference on sci-fi and fantasy literature, which is organised by the National Book Council.

The conference will bring together local and international authors who all have created their own fantastical worlds in their works. These include Loranne Vella (Malta), Joan Courtenay Grimwood (UK), Kali Wallace (US) and Dave Rudden (Ireland). The conference will be monitored by translator and writer of It-Tawmaturgu: Il-Hmura ta' Filghaxija Mark Anthony-Fenech. The Malta Independent contacted Mark to discuss the conference and its importance on sci-fi and fantasy fiction in Malta.

What are you expecting from the conference itself, given that there are four other authors who have created their own different fantasy worlds?

I am looking forward to hearing about each author's years of experience, knowledge and their take on the worlds they created, as well as their own ideas on what is essential when telling a sci-fi and fantasy story. I'm also keen on their take on the standing of genre literature vis a vis literary fiction; whether this fixation with pigeonholing stories is a fruitless exercise since some works transcend boundaries; whether it is an exercise in snobbery, or if this helps authors and readers discover science fiction and fantasy.

The science fiction genre dates back hundreds of year, during the time of great advances in science and technology. Yet in most recent years there has been a rise in sci-fi and speculative fiction, as more authors question what the future will look like.

What do you think is the reason behind this rise and what attracts authors and readers towards this genre?

One might say that the "Epic of Gilgamesh" is one of the first, if not the first fantasy epic. Of course, mythology might be seen as the precursor of fantasy, that is a testament to the human imagination, creating stories and other worlds to make sense of their own.

More recently, the likes of Mary Shelley, Jules Verne, H.G Wells, JRR Tolkien and others have spearheaded both science fiction and fantasy, with sci-fi keeping pace and running ahead with the scientific discoveries of the time and the angst they caused.

The age of the internet, Dungeons and Dragons, Game Workshop and the rise of blockbuster franchises such as Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe have made the genres more accessible and fired the imagination of millions. There are many reasons as to why an author writes in such genres such as the lure to create an alternative world, it's like playing chess with history and the future.

Apart from the language, do you believe Maltese local sci-fi and fantasy literature has a different theme and style when compared to international titles of the same genre?

It is too early to determine the voice of Maltese fantasy and sci-fi, but the present authors are carving their niches and lighting the way. Maltese literature as a whole is fledgling compared to English, American, French and Italian literature to name but a few. There is a beauty to this in that the authors are establishing the rules of the genre within the local setting for others to follow, and are shaping the language to the stories they create.

Which authors and events inspired you to write Tawmaturgu?

Where to start? Warhammar 40,000, Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, and movies such as Event Horizon, have all been great influences. Authors who have left a great influence would be  JRR Tolkien, Frank Herbert, Dan Abnett, Aaron Dembski-Bowden and Graham McNeil to name a few. On the local scene, Trevor Zahra's Meta Jaqa C-Cpar was probably the first Maltese sci-fi book I've read and an interview with the author was essential in inspiring me to write when he encouraged would be authors to read.

I started writing It-Tawmaturgu after translating excerpts from Dan Abnett's Prospero Burns and Aaron Dembski-Bowden's Soul Hunter into Maltese for my MA in Translation dissertation. This showed me that not only was sci-fi in Maltese possible but that the language was malleable enough in the creation of neologisms and in telling a story with jargon related to military, astronomy and technology set in the far future. An excerpt from It-Tawmaturgu was edited by Joseph Sultana and Kit Azzopardi.

John A Bonello, National Book Prize Winner and author of Il-Loghba Tal-Allat trilogy and the Irvin Vella books, was my mentor and editor; who was extremely helpful and it was all thanks to him that I published the novel. I would like to call him the Master Jedi with me being the Padawan here.

What are you expecting from the Book Festival? Do you believe it is an important event and why?

I hope it would encourage people to read and maybe write their own work. There are many different worlds and stories out there waiting to be discovered. I hope the presence of illustrious authors like Loranne Vella, Dave Rudden, Kali Wallace and Jon Courtenay Grimwood help shed light onto the genres of science fiction and fantasy and be inspiration to their audiences.

The Book Festival is a very important event, it encourages people to read, be more critical in their everyday lives and be more active citizens. I cannot stress enough how important or praise the stellar work of the National Book Council in promoting literature in Malta and the rights of authors.

What is your advice to inspiring authors or those experiencing writers block?

I have only written one novel and still have much to learn and will always do. My advice though, such as it is, would be to read, not only in the genre they're writing in but outside their comfort zones. They should be ready for criticism and should always have beta readers to read their work before submitting their work for publishing. As for writer's block, it comes and goes. Sometimes it's good to stop for a while, to let the work rest and start again after a break. That said, writing is mostly discipline, there is no such thing as the muse or waiting to be inspired- otherwise you would never finish anything.

What is next for you?

Translating It-Tawmaturgu into English (this has been a long time coming), and writing the sequel which is called It-Tawmaturgu: Il-Hmura ta' Filghodu (The Thaumaturge: Red Sky at Dawn).

Grotesque and mirthless humour in "Midnight Hotel" and Morning Yet on Judgement Day"

Cache

This paper intends to examine theories of humour in which the comic and the tragic meet through the style and structure of a text. It therefore defines the grotesque along this line and expands our interpretation of Osofisan's satiric pieces in within the ambit of unnatural disordered universe he creates to arouse laugher. This is in contrast to the kind of humour that is mirthless in because the issues in discussion range from the serious and the tragic about the socio-political environment in which the play weaves the plot. In other words, our reception of each of these plays depends on the language and style of the plays to elicit either of the reactions: the grotesque in terms of the comic and mirthless humour in terms of the tragic which are so illustrated in each of the play. The paper concludes that whatever our reaction to each play both are good texts that intend to liberate us through humour from any frustration about the environment in which the texts are situated.

Etwas verfolgt viele Aktivist*innen, Anarchist*innen, Umweltschützer*innen, viele meiner Freund*innen.

1. Keine (globale) Zukunft
  • Religiöse Mythen: Fortschritt, globaler Kapitalismus, Weltrevolution, globaler Untergang

A TRIBUTE TO MY BLOGGER FRIENDS

A TRIBUTE TO MY BLOGGER FRIENDS.
by: Neneng R. Tarigan

Friendship is a unique relationship that knows no difference, cultural or otherwise.~

As bloggers, I think it is part of our obligation to promote our friends' blogs or their web sites in any possible way we can.
Yes, I must admit, sometimes we feel reluctant because some of them are so unmindful even to leave a little comment on our posts; we feel bad about that. However, let us forget about their negative sides for a while and think what we can value and learn from our blogger friends who really have brilliant ideas to put in their blogs, sorts of stories and info that would make our lives as the readers much happier, knowledgeable and colorful.
Let us just remember, how they have made our day full with laughter and curiosity with their intriguing writings, how they can turn our egoism down with their preaches and the wise words as well as poems that they have created or some had been quoted from famous people around the world, or the pictures and traveling experiences they shared with us in their blogs, their cooking recipes, their fashion ideas, their health tips, their amazing pictures, their gigs, their craziness, their cartoons, their love stories, their films, their talent as fortune tellers, their free money making machines, their skill as an IT experts, their gardening, their small agriculture expertise, their arts, their architecture, their free games and thousand others that could color our lives.
This post is a tribute to that kind of friends I have. There are thousands of them, but let us check some of their links and find out why these people deserve a special tribute as friends, though most of them are non professional writers, photographers, film makers, but what they had produced would make us whispers: " Yes indeed, they are really good!"
Here are some recommended links that I am sure you might share my view of their quality. Please take note that the row where I put the names of the bloggers does not represent the rank at all. You may also recommend me more links and categories to be add in this list, but that should not be the links belong to companies or organizations except your own company or organization; I am sure that will be interesting and fun as we could assume it as a little appreciation among us as real bloggers.
I highly value your concern for spending your precious time to check for the links in this list. I wish our works as bloggers would contribute to a greater advantageous to many people around the globe; and most importantly, to create a better connection and to enable us as human beings to live in peace and harmony together.
May God bless our works.
Forever your friend, Neneng Tarigan - Indonesia.

So I'm writing an essay trying to create a religion based around the worship of time. It's exciting stuff. I'm not sure if I should leave this joke in though...

Cache

Mkay. Get back to me when Time loses all meaning because the Void has consumed all. When all the stars have gone out, when all matter has decayed, when all the black holes have evaporated, when the universe has finally reached that stable perfection that is absolute maximum entropy, when Nothing remains, and will remain, forever. Edit: Ok, quick skim of the Sithis wiki, since I'm not deep, or at all, into ES lore. And I gotta say, these chumps don't know shit about worshiping the Void. Chaos? Death? The Void is absolute stable perfection, the truly unachievable state of the existence of non-existence. The Void is the duality of everything and nothing. This whole system is flawed if they're attributing both "light" and "order" to the same god, Anu. Light is true chaos. It's bizarre how often everyone tries to combine things like "light" and "life" with perfection and order and stability. Light and life are absolutely chaotic elements. Light is movement. Light is energy. How is it anyone can believe energy and stability can co-exist? Delusional. No. Life will end, the light will fade, and all that will be left is the darkness, as the universe slowly grinds to a halt, achieving perfect stability. Nah. The more I read, the more I think this lore doesn't remotely fit with my idea of The Void. The Void isn't a counterpart to anything. The Void is the sum of all that is and all that is not. Death is the counterpart to Life. The Void encompasses them both. The Void is Beginning and End. From the Void, the universe was ripped, chaotic and violent, and from that moment, the universe has only ever sought to return to that state of Nothing.

The Best Pioneer Square Art Openings This Month

Cache

Serene Woodblocks, Digital Art, A Tribute to Victims of White Supremacy, and Other Critics' Picks by Stranger EverOut Staff

On the first Thursday of every month, Seattleites flock to the streets of Pioneer Square for the city's central and oldest art walk, which offers opportunities to stroll, sip on wine, and attend as many gallery openings as possible. But, in most cases, the shows are up for longer than just one night, and the historic neighborhood is a great place to check out art any day of the year. So, below, we've compiled the most promising exhibits that are having opening receptions on November 7—complete with a Google map at the bottom.

Ancestral Journeyz of Coastal Voices
Multidisciplinary artists from various tribes—including Quileute, Quinault, Lummi, Tulalip, Makah, Skokomish, Kalispel, Muckleshoot, and Duwamish—juxtapose 1989's Coastal Canoe Journey Roadway (an annual celebration that recognizes the cultural importance of canoe travel to indigenous people) with 2019's through photographs, stained glass, weaving, paddles, regalia, and other art forms.
SOIL Gallery

David Hytone: The Armchair Librettist
David Hytone has worked in paint, ink, paper, ceramics, and large-scale collage. His latest paintings on okawara Japanese paper blur the lines between geometric abstraction and the macroorganism.
Linda Hodges Gallery

Eva Isaksen: Urd/New Collages
Former Stranger critics Jen Graves and Nathaniel Deines called Isaksen "one of those rare, non-schlocky collage artists." Here, she uses materials reminiscent of her Norwegian childhood, like cut-ups of the "vintage Norwegian women's magazine URD."
Foster/White Gallery

Eva Pietzcker: Earth, Water, Light
Berlin-based Eva Pietzcker’s prints are mostly in the vein of Japanese-style woodblock printmaking, a process where watercolor paint is applied to a carved woodblock with brushes and printed by hand onto soft paper, as opposed to the Western style of using a press. Of this method, Pietzcker says that Japanese style prints “tend to have a more painterly appearance and can often resemble watercolor paintings.” I love the way the sun shines and falls upon water in her work. She has a piece that features Lake Crescent, in Olympic National Park, where the lake sparkles through the black trees. It almost seems to transform the medium of ink and paper into earth, water, and glimmer. JASMYNE KEIMIG
Davidson Galleries

Janna Watson: Seven Perfect Syllables
In 2018, Emily Pothast wrote for The Stranger: "In the early 20th century, nonobjective painting was seen as something revolutionary. Today, it feels almost quaint and anachronistic, as though every painting for its own sake that the universe could possibly need has already been made. The large-scale mixed-media works of Toronto-based painter Janna Watson stand in defiance of this trend. Large brushstrokes and small bursts of color wiggle and dance on soft gradients like visual music. A recent article from Artsy named Watson's paintings among the most collectible offerings at Seattle Art Fair—but even if you're not in the market to buy art, these are very nice to look at."
Foster/White Gallery

Ko Kirk Yamahira
Ko Kirk Yamahira’s works—one of which was recently acquired by the Frye Art Museum for its permanent collection—are destruction in suspension. Yamahira creatively takes apart sections of canvases, thread by thread (vertically, horizontally), expanding the breadth of the material and forcing it to occupy the gallery space in a new way. When I first saw his pieces, I marveled at the fastidiousness of his deconstruction, his unravelings. Of his work, he writes, “There is no specific aim to find a meaning, neither in the creative act itself, nor through the creative process.” His pieces are never finished, representing the beginning of a process of undoing and creation. JASMYNE KEIMIG
4Culture Gallery

Maja Petrić, Etsuko Ichikawa, Peter Gronquist: Digital Perspectives
This group exhibition brings together three artists whose work—in one way or another—utilizes different digital mediums to talk about humanity’s relationship to the world around us. Maja Petrić will be presenting Particle Attraction, a new interactive piece where viewers have the chance to walk through a simulated landscape. Etsuko Ichikawa will be continuing her exploration of nuclear waste and “what we choose to leave behind” in Murmurings of Love, in which a futuristic figure smashes a vessel made of uranium glass. And finally, in A Visual History of the Invisible 2, Peter Gronquist will be projecting a “soothing and hypnotic” digital installation of a large gold fabric magically suspended against a bright-blue sky. JASMYNE KEIMIG
Winston Wächter Gallery

Norman Lundin: Remembered Detail
I do believe in the holiness of certain overlooked spaces. Especially at times of the day that almost do not exist. Like, 3:30 p.m. is definitely a time, but 6:43 a.m.? I don’t know her. Seattle-based artist Norman Lundin’s work memorializes and depicts this kind of time, in these kinds of spaces. The way the light from the late-afternoon sun slants through the windows onto the neglected side of a studio, or the orange glow of dawn outside the windows of a dark workroom. A reminder that the forgotten, the overlooked, the just barely remembered can be sacred and beautiful, too. JASMYNE KEIMIG
Greg Kucera Gallery

Paul Rucker: Forever
In past exhibitions, this Guggenheim Fellowship-winning artist and cellist has meditated on such topics as police shootings, racism, slavery, and other atrocities against African Americans and other people of color. His 2016 series Forced Migration, for example, used animation and acrylics to expand upon the image of an enslaved person on a Confederate $100 bill. This exhibition features stamp prints on aluminum that depict activists, schoolchildren, falsely accused teens, and others murdered by white supremacists.

Chris Evans joined 'Billy on the Street' to rally a posse of lesbians

Billy Eichner has returned to terrorize the streets of New York once more, dragging along human golden retriever Chris Evans to join him in the 15th anniversary episode of Billy on the Street.

With Eichner dual-wielding his signature microphone and blatant disregard for social norms, the pair rushed about the city to ask random strangers a series of pressing questions. These included whether they'd sign a petition "to remove Kevin Spacey from homosexuality and add Chris Evans", and if they'd rather have sex with Evans or his Marvel Cinematic Universe co-star Paul Rudd.

Rudd was picked up in their frantic charge through New York, joining Eichner and Evans for a brief period before being replaced with "Chris' worst nightmare: a bunch of lesbians that don't care that he's hot."  Read more...

‘Helstrom’ Adds Ex-X-Man Daniel Cudmore In A Recurring Role

Cache

Are we getting our first crossover between the ‘X-Men’ movie universe and the Marvel Cinematic Universe?  Well, no, but close.  Daniel Cudmore has been cast in a recurring role on Hulu’s live-action series ‘Helstrom’, based on the Marvel comic book characters Daimon and Ana (Satana) Helstrom, who might be the children of Satan. On the show, their father is a notorious serial killer.  It’s unknown if that is a misdirect or if the show is deviating from the comics.  Cudmore’s character, Keith Spivey, is “a nurse at St. Teresa’s where  Daimon and Ana’s mother, Victoria, has been institutionalized for the last 20 years.”  (per Deadline)   RELATED: Character Breakdowns From Marvel And Hulu’s ‘Helstrom’ Emerge   Of course, Cudmore may be best known among comic book adaptation fans for playing Colossus in the ‘X-Men’ films.  He debuted in ‘X2: X-Men United’, and went on to appear in ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ (a.k.a. ‘X-Men 3’), and in ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’, in which he was part of the mutant resistance that had gone into hiding to avoid the Sentinels.  He is also listed as having made an uncredited appearance in this year’s ‘Dark Phoenix’, but I don’t recall seeing him. Forcing It: Cancelled ‘Star Wars’ Films From David Benioff and DB Weiss Were To Explain Origins Of The Jedi

For a lot of fans, news that David Benioff and DB Weiss were no longer going to be making films in the ‘Star Wars’ universe was not that much of a blow, especially for the ones who did not enjoy the direction they took and ended ‘Game of Thrones’ on. Now, thanks to Variety, there is more news about the kind of film they had been looking to make for ‘Star Wars,’ which is sure to make a large group of those fans even happier that the films are not moving forward. According to the Variety story, the trilogy of movies that Benioff and Weiss were developing would: “… exist apart from the Skywalker family saga,” and focus on “exploring….how the Jedi came to exist.” The last time ‘Star Wars’ tried to “explore” any part of their mythology was when George Lucas tried to explain the nature of the Force in the prequels with the midi-chlorians, and fans have still not gotten over complaining about that. And in this situation, since rumors had been flying that Weiss and Benioff would be doing movies set in the days of the “Old Republic” and fans were hoping for something similar to what […]

Aeon: Post-Empirical Science Is An Oxymoron And It is Dangerous:

There is no agreed criterion to distinguish science from pseudoscience, or just plain ordinary bullshit, opening the door to all manner of metaphysics masquerading as science. This is ‘post-empirical’ science, where truth no longer matters, and it is potentially very dangerous.

It’s not difficult to find recent examples. On 8 June 2019, the front cover of New Scientist magazine boldly declared that we’re ‘Inside the Mirrorverse’. Its editors bid us ‘Welcome to the parallel reality that’s hiding in plain sight’. […]

[Some physicists] claim that neutrons [are] flitting between parallel universes. They admit that the chances of proving this are ‘low’, or even ‘zero’, but it doesn’t really matter. When it comes to grabbing attention, inviting that all-important click, or purchase, speculative metaphysics wins hands down.

These theories are based on the notion that our Universe is not unique, that there exists a large number of other universes that somehow sit alongside or parallel to our own. For example, in the so-called Many-Worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics, there are universes containing our parallel selves, identical to us but for their different experiences of quantum physics. These theories are attractive to some few theoretical physicists and philosophers, but there is absolutely no empirical evidence for them. And, as it seems we can’t ever experience these other universes, there will never be any evidence for them. As Broussard explained, these theories are sufficiently slippery to duck any kind of challenge that experimentalists might try to throw at them, and there’s always someone happy to keep the idea alive.

Is this really science? The answer depends on what you think society needs from science. In our post-truth age of casual lies, fake news and alternative facts, society is under extraordinary pressure from those pushing potentially dangerous antiscientific propaganda – ranging from climate-change denial to the anti-vaxxer movement to homeopathic medicines. I, for one, prefer a science that is rational and based on evidence, a science that is concerned with theories and empirical facts, a science that promotes the search for truth, no matter how transient or contingent. I prefer a science that does not readily admit theories so vague and slippery that empirical tests are either impossible or they mean absolutely nothing at all.

As always, a single quote doesn’t do the argument justice, so go read the article. But I think this captures the basic argument: multiverse theories are bad, because they’re untestable, and untestable science is pseudoscience.

Many great people, both philosophers of science and practicing scientists, have already discussed the problems with this point of view. But none of them lay out their argument in quite the way that makes the most sense to me. I want to do that here, without claiming any originality or special expertise in the subject, to see if it helps convince anyone else.

II.

Consider a classic example: modern paleontology does a good job at predicting dinosaur fossils. But the creationist explanation – Satan buried fake dinosaur fossils to mislead us – also predicts the same fossils (we assume Satan is good at disguising his existence, so that the lack of other strong evidence for Satan doesn’t contradict the theory). What principles help us realize that the Satan hypothesis is obviously stupid and the usual paleontological one more plausible?

One bad response: paleontology can better predict characteristics of dinosaur fossils, using arguments like “since plesiosaurs are aquatic, they will be found in areas that were underwater during the Mesozoic, but since tyrannosaurs are terrestrial, they will be found in areas that were on land”, and this makes it better than the Satan hypothesis, which can only retrodict these characteristics. But this isn’t quite true: since Satan is trying to fool us into believing the modern paleontology paradigm, he’ll hide the fossils in ways that conform to its predictions, so we will predict plesiosaur fossils will only be found at sea – otherwise the gig would be up!

A second bad response: “The hypothesis that all our findings were planted to deceive us bleeds into conspiracy theories and touches on the problem of skepticism. These things are inherently outside the realm of science.” But archaeological findings are very often deliberate hoaxes planted to deceive archaeologists, and in practice archaeologists consider and test that hypothesis the same way they consider and test every other hypothesis. Rule this out by fiat and we have to accept Piltdown Man, or at least claim that the people arguing against the veracity of Piltdown Man were doing something other than Science.

A third bad response: “Satan is supernatural and science is not allowed to consider supernatural explanations.” Fine then, replace Satan with an alien. I think this is a stupid distinction – if demons really did interfere in earthly affairs, then we could investigate their actions using the same methods we use to investigate every other process. But this would take a long time to argue well, so for now let’s just stick with the alien.

A fourth bad response: “There is no empirical test that distinguishes the Satan hypothesis from the paleontology hypothesis, therefore the Satan hypothesis is inherently unfalsifiable and therefore pseudoscientific.” But this can’t be right. After all, there’s no empirical test that distinguishes the paleontology hypothesis from the Satan hypothesis! If we call one of them pseudoscience based on their inseparability, we have to call the other one pseudoscience too!

A naive Popperian (which maybe nobody really is) would have to stop here, and say that we predict dinosaur fossils will have such-and-such characteristics, but that questions like that process that drives this pattern – a long-dead ecosystem of actual dinosaurs, or the Devil planting dinosaur bones to deceive us – is a mystical question beyond the ability of Science to even conceivably solve.

I think the correct response is to say that both theories explain the data, and one cannot empirically test which theory is true, but the paleontology theory is more elegant (I am tempted to say “simpler”, but that might imply I have a rigorous mathematical definition of the form of simplicity involved, which I don’t). It requires fewer other weird things to be true. It involves fewer other hidden variables. It transforms our worldview less. It gets a cleaner shave with Occam’s Razor. This elegance is so important to us that it explains our vast preference for the first theory over the second.

A long tradition of philosophers of science have already written eloquently about this, summed up by Sean Carroll here:

What makes an explanation “the best.” Thomas Kuhn ,after his influential book The Structure of Scientific Revolutions led many people to think of him as a relativist when it came to scientific claims, attempted to correct this misimpression by offering a list of criteria that scientists use in practice to judge one theory better than another one: accuracy, consistency, broad scope, simplicity, and fruitfulness. “Accuracy” (fitting the data) is one of these criteria, but by no means the sole one. Any working scientist can think of cases where each of these concepts has been invoked in favor of one theory or another. But there is no unambiguous algorithm according to which we can feed in these criteria, a list of theories, and a set of data, and expect the best theory to pop out. The way in which we judge scientific theories is inescapably reflective, messy, and human. That’s the reality of how science is actually done; it’s a matter of judgment, not of drawing bright lines between truth and falsity or science and non-science. Fortunately, in typical cases the accumulation of evidence eventually leaves only one viable theory in the eyes of most reasonable observers.

The dinosaur hypothesis and the Satan hypothesis both fit the data, but the dinosaur hypothesis wins hands-down on simplicity. As Carroll predicts, most reasonable observers are able to converge on the same solution here, despite the philosophical complexity.

III.

I’m starting with this extreme case because its very extremity makes it easier to see the mechanism in action. But I think the same process applies to other cases that people really worry about.

Consider the riddle of the Sphinx. There’s pretty good archaeological evidence supporting the consensus position that it was built by Pharaoh Khafre. But there are a few holes in that story, and a few scattered artifacts suggest it was actually built by Pharaoh Khufu; a respectable minority of archaeologists believe this. And there are a few anomalies which, if taken wildly out of context, you can use to tell a story that it was built long before Egypt existed at all, maybe by Atlantis or aliens.

So there are three competing hypotheses. All of them are consistent with current evidence (even the Atlantis one, which was written after the current evidence was found and carefully adds enough epicycles not to blatantly contradict it). Perhaps one day evidence will come to light that supports one above the others; maybe in some unexcavated tomb, a hieroglyphic tablet says “I created the Sphinx, sincerely yours, Pharaoh Khufu”. But maybe this won’t happen. Maybe we already have all the Sphinx-related evidence we’re going to get. Maybe the information necessary to distinguish among these hypotheses has been utterly lost beyond any conceivable ability to reconstruct.

I don’t want to say “No hypothesis can be tested any further, so Science is useless to us here”, because then we’re forced to conclude stupid things like “Science has no opinion on whether the Sphinx was built by Khafre or Atlanteans,” whereas I think most scientists would actually have very strong opinions on that.

But what about the question of whether the Sphinx was built by Khafre or Khufu? This is a real open question with respectable archaeologists on both sides; what can we do about it?

I think the answer would have to be: the same thing we did with the Satan vs. paleontology question, only now it’s a lot harder. We try to figure out which theory requires fewer other weird things to be true, fewer hidden variables, less transformation of our worldview – which theory works better with Occam’s Razor. This is relatively easy in the Atlantis case, and hard but potentially possible in the Khafre vs. Khufu case.

(Bayesians can rephrase this to: given that we have a certain amount of evidence for each, can we quantify exactly how much evidence, and what our priors for each should be. It would end not with a decisive victory of one or the other, but with a probability distribution, maybe 80% chance it was Khafre, 20% chance it was Khufu)

I think this is a totally legitimate thing for Egyptologists to do, even if it never results in a particular testable claim that gets tested. If you don’t think it’s a legitimate thing for Egyptologists to do, I have trouble figuring out how you can justify Egyptologists rejecting the Atlantis theory.

(Again, Bayesians would start with a very low prior for Atlantis, and assess the evidence as very low, and end up with a probability distribution something like Khafre 80%, Khufu 19.999999%, Atlantis 0.000001%)

IV.

How does this relate to things like multiverse theory? Before we get there, one more hokey example:

Suppose scientists measure the mass of one particle at 32.604 units, the mass of another related particle at 204.897 units, and the mass of a third related particle at 4452.767 units. For a while, this is just how things are – it seems to be an irreducible brute fact about the universe. Then some theorist notices that if you set the mass of the first particle as x, then the second is 2πx and the third is 43 πx^2. They theorize that perhaps the quantum field forms some sort of extradimensional sphere, the first particle represents a diameter of a great circle of the sphere, the second the circumference of the great circle, and the third the volume of the sphere.

(please excuse the stupidity of my example, I don’t know enough about physics to come up with something that isn’t stupid, but I hope it will illustrate my point)

In fact, imagine that there are a hundred different particles, all with different masses, and all one hundred have masses that perfectly correspond to various mathematical properties of spheres.

Is the person who made this discovery doing Science? And should we consider their theory a useful contribution to physics?

I think the answer is clearly yes. But consider what this commits us to. Suppose the scientist came up with their Extradimensional Sphere hypothesis after learning the masses of the relevant particles, and so it has not predicted anything. Suppose the extradimensional sphere is outside normal space, curled up into some dimension we can’t possibly access or test without a particle accelerator the size of the moon. Suppose there are no undiscovered particles in this set that can be tested to see if they also reflect sphere-related parameters. This theory is exactly the kind of postempirical, metaphysical construct that the Aeon article savages.

But it’s really compelling. We have a hundred different particles, and this theory retrodicts the properties of each of them perfectly. And it’s so simple – just say the word “sphere” and the rest falls out naturally! You would have to be crazy not to think it was at least pretty plausible, or that the scientist who developed it had done some good work.

Nor do I think it seems right to say “The discovery that all of our unexplained variables perfectly match the parameters of a sphere is good, but the hypothesis that there really is a sphere is outside the bounds of Science.” That sounds too much like saying “It’s fine to say dinosaur bones have such-and-such characteristics, but we must never speculate about what kind of process produced them, or whether it involved actual dinosaurs”.

V.

My understanding of the multiverse debate is that it works the same way. Scientists observe the behavior of particles, and find that a multiverse explains that behavior more simply and elegantly than not-a-multiverse.

One (doubtless exaggerated) way I’ve heard multiverse proponents explain their position is like this: in certain situations the math declares two contradictory answers – in the classic example, Schrodinger’s cat will be both alive and dead. But when we open the box, we see only a dead cat or an alive cat, not both. Multiverse opponents say “Some unknown force steps in at the last second and destroys one of the possibility branches”. Multiverse proponents say “No it doesn’t, both possibility branches happen exactly the way the math says, and we end up in one of them.”

Taking this exaggerated dumbed-down account as exactly right, this sounds about as hard as the dinosaurs-vs-Satan example, in terms of figuring out which is more Occam’s Razor compliant. I’m sure the reality is more nuanced, but I think it can be judged by the same process. Perhaps this is the kind of reasoning that only gets us to a 90% probability there is a multiverse, rather than a 99.999999% one. But I think determining that theories have 90% probability is a reasonable scientific thing to do.

VI.

At times, the Aeon article seems to flirt with admitting that something like this is necessary:

Such problems were judged by philosophers of science to be insurmountable, and Popper’s falsifiability criterion was abandoned (though, curiously, it still lives on in the minds of many practising scientists). But rather than seek an alternative, in 1983 the philosopher Larry Laudan declared that the demarcation problem is actually intractable, and must therefore be a pseudo-problem. He argued that the real distinction is between knowledge that is reliable or unreliable, irrespective of its provenance, and claimed that terms such as ‘pseudoscience’ and ‘unscientific’ have no real meaning.

But it always jumps back from the precipice:

So, if we can’t make use of falsifiability, what do we use instead? I don’t think we have any real alternative but to adopt what I might call the empirical criterion. Demarcation is not some kind of binary yes-or-no, right-or-wrong, black-or-white judgment. We have to admit shades of grey. Popper himself was ready to accept this, [saying]:

“The criterion of demarcation cannot be an absolutely sharp one but will itself have degrees. There will be well-testable theories, hardly testable theories, and non-testable theories. Those which are non-testable are of no interest to empirical scientists. They may be described as metaphysical.”

Here, ‘testability’ implies only that a theory either makes contact, or holds some promise of making contact, with empirical evidence. It makes no presumptions about what we might do in light of the evidence. If the evidence verifies the theory, that’s great – we celebrate and start looking for another test. If the evidence fails to support the theory, then we might ponder for a while or tinker with the auxiliary assumptions. Either way, there’s a tension between the metaphysical content of the theory and the empirical data – a tension between the ideas and the facts – which prevents the metaphysics from getting completely out of hand. In this way, the metaphysics is tamed or ‘naturalised’, and we have something to work with. This is science.

But as we’ve seen, many things we really want to include as science are not testable: our credence for real dinosaurs over Satan planting fossils, our credence for Khafre building the Sphinx over Khufu or Atlanteans, or elegant patterns that explain the features of the universe like the Extradimensional-Sphere Theory.

The Aeon article is aware of Carroll’s work – which, along with the paragraph quoted in Section II above, includes a lot of detailed Bayesian reasoning encompassing everything I’ve discussed. But the article dismisses it in a few sentences:

Sean Carroll, a vocal advocate for the Many-Worlds interpretation, prefers abduction, or what he calls ‘inference to the best explanation’, which leaves us with theories that are merely ‘parsimonious’, a matter of judgment, and ‘still might reasonably be true’. But whose judgment? In the absence of facts, what constitutes ‘the best explanation’?

Carroll seeks to dress his notion of inference in the cloth of respectability provided by something called Bayesian probability theory, happily overlooking its entirely subjective nature. It’s a short step from here to the theorist-turned-philosopher Richard Dawid’s efforts to justify the string theory programme in terms of ‘theoretically confirmed theory’ and ‘non-empirical theory assessment’. The ‘best explanation’ is then based on a choice between purely metaphysical constructs, without reference to empirical evidence, based on the application of a probability theory that can be readily engineered to suit personal prejudices.

“A choice between purely metaphysical constructs, without reference to empirical evidence” sounds pretty bad, until you realize he’s talking about the same reasoning we use to determine that real dinosaurs are more likely than Satan planting fossils.

I don’t want to go over the exact ways in which Bayesian methods are subjective (which I think are overestimated) vs. objective. I think it’s more fruitful to point out that your brain is already using Bayesian methods to interpret the photons striking your eyes into this sentence, to make snap decisions about what sense the words are used in, and to integrate them into your model of the world. If Bayesian methods are good enough to give you every single piece of evidence about the nature of the external world that you have ever encountered in your entire life, I say they’re good enough for science.

Or if you don’t like that, you can use the explanation above, which barely uses the word “Bayes” at all and just describes everything in terms like “Occam’s Razor” and “you wouldn’t want to conclude something like that, would you?”

I know there are separate debates about whether this kind of reasoning-from-simplicity is actually good enough, when used by ordinary people, to consistently arrive at truth. Or whether it’s a productive way to conduct science that will give us good new theories, or a waste of everybody’s time. I sympathize with some these concerns, though I am nowhere near scientifically educated enough to have an actual opinion on the questions at play.

But I think it’s important to argue that even before you describe the advantages and disadvantages of the complicated Bayesian math that lets you do this, something like this has to be done. The untestable is a fundamental part of science, impossible to remove. We can debate how to explain it. But denying it isn’t an option.

Marvels is brilliant. This is a decent book, but it simply doesn't live up to its predecessor. I'm not sure I can put my finger on why, exactly, that is. Maybe it's because the subject matter just isn't as awe-inspiring. Instead of the birth of the cornerstones of the Marvel universe, this is the nitty gritty, what makes it run decade in and decade out: the distrust of normal people. And while that was a major plot point in the original, there were other things going on there. This is basically all about that. Which makes it pretty repetitive. Superhero does something great, has one second of praise, is almost immediately framed or smeared, is cleared, lather, rinse, repeat. And while that is, the ebb and flow of the Marvel universe, especially anything related to mutants, seeing it reduced like this is just depressing. But if you've been wondering about the fate of Maggie, and I think we almost all have, it's a relief to get to finally know the rest of her story.

Bob Marley said that and he was absolutely right! Take a moment right now, sit quietly, take a few deep breaths and then ask yourself if you are satisfied with the life you are presently living. The first answer that comes to you is your intuition talking and is always right. For most of us, the answer will be "No." And that's OK because we are all born with an innate desire to grow and evolve. We feel this because we are part of the Universe, a piece of God, if you will. But if you are f [...]

Shadow Brokers data dump tipped researchers off to a mysterious APT dubbed DarkUniverse

Cache

Clues about a hacking group that carried out attacks against targets in countries including Syria, Iran and Russia were included in files leaked by a mysterious group known as the Shadow Brokers, according to new findings. Researchers from the security vendor Kaspersky published a report Tuesday detailing an advanced persistent threat (APT) group the company has dubbed DarkUniverse. Documents published in 2017 by the Shadow Brokers — an elusive group that publicly disseminated NSA hacking tools — included a script that checked for other hacking groups lurking in a compromised system. DarkUniverse was among the groups the script could check for. The DarkUniverse group hit victims in Afghanistan, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Belarus and the United Arab Emirates, along with more common targets like Russia, Iran and Syria. All told, the APT group breached “around” 20 victims ranging from military agencies to private sector organizations like telecommunication firms, and medical institutions. “We believe […]

“Full many a gem of purest ray serene

The dark unfathomed caves of ocean bear:

Full many a flower is born to blush unseen

And waste its sweetness on the desert air” – Thomas Gray

The metaphor perfectly fits Dr Subashini Pathmanathan, who has substantially contributed to the society as a teacher of Bharatha Natyam (Vazhuvoor Style), artiste, researcher, journalist, author of around 18 books to her credit, and a passionate exponent of Bharatha Natyam in its pristine form. I happened to witness her Lecture Demonstration at the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre on Friday, October 11.

The aura created by her dedicated and graceful performance with poise to the enchanting melodies played in the background, whisked the audience to Kailash in an instance. The lecture she gave showed the commitment and the wide knowledge Dr Subashini Pathmanathan has towards Bharatha Natyam.

The session started with a Viruththam by Saint Thirunaavukkarasar - Appan Nii, Ammai Nii. The saint declares to Shiva that everyone and everything found on earth is Him – as he sees Shiva in all. The meaning was brought out by Subashini with splendid facial expressions and flexible postures attributed to the theme.

Next was a Patham, Atputha Sitpi, sung on the cosmic dancer - Chidambaram Nadaraj, by Thandaayuthapaani Pillai, to a lovely melody of Ragamalika (a medley of ragas), set to Aathi Thaalam (rhythm).

Seeing Shiva as a lover, the devotee sings that nowhere on earth has he come across such a magnificent and meaningful sculpture depicting various aspects of the cosmic dancer. The udukku (damarukam) represents the vibrations from which the sound creates many universes with different manifestations. Agni (fire) denotes samharam (destruction) of the material bonds, leading to dissolution and liberation from the cycles of birth. The abayak karam (right palm) signifies protection; the thookkiya thiruvadi (raised foot) symbolises salvation; and oondriya thiruvadi (the other foot) on muyalakan (ego) is firmly pressed down, to suppress the ego created by maya (illusion).Subashini splendidly brought out the meaning of the composition through vivid expressions, in which the devotee begs for deliverance.

Moving on, an 18th-century composition, Theruvil Vaaraano in the Ragam Kamas set to Roopaka Thaalam by Sri Muththu Thandavar was chosen. The lyrics articulate how the devotee pleads with God to appear at least on the road and pave the way for salvation. Subashini did justice to the stanzas through her graceful steps and captivating expressions.

The last dance for the presentation was a Varnam on Lord Murugan by Paabanaasam Sivan in Sri Ranjani Raga set to Aathi Thaalam. This composition encompasses all three aspects of Bharatha Natyam: Niruththam (rhythm, vibrancy and the beauty of dance); Nirthiam (expressions for interpretation of meanings); and Natyam (story oriented). The devotee appeals to Parvathi to send her son Murugan, either as a lover or as a kid and relieve him from the earthly compulsions.

In the closing session, she earnestly pleaded with those engaged in learning and imparting this divine art, to do so in its purest pristine form.

I thank all involved in having such an educative programme. It was an entrancing solo lecture and rendering by Dr Pathmanathan. A performance which should have had a packed auditorium sadly did not have. Like a precious stone unmined at the bottom of the ocean or a beautiful flower blooming in the deep woods, her heroic work may not be seen or known, if her work does not reach us.

This seldom-seen perspective offers a true insider’s view of one of ESO’s world-leading telescopes: the VLT Survey Telescope, or VST.

The VST is installed at ESO’s Paranal Observatory in Chile. It is the largest telescope surveying the sky in light visible to humans and its cutting-edge design makes it a powerful tool for studying the Universe.  From this viewpoint the OmegaCAM instrument — a camera with a large field of view — can be seen front and centre, nestled inside its stabilising control structure.

When night falls the telescope’s dome opens and the VST gets to work. The high altitude and arid conditions of the Atacama Desert provide the perfect conditions for astronomical observing, delivering cloud-free skies and very low light pollution for the vast majority of the year. This allows for truly spectacular views of the Milky Way overhead, complete with its array of striking colours, streaks of dark interstellar dust, and bright foreground stars — as seen here.

10 quotes that prove humanity is absurd

                  Cache

                  • Absurdism is the philosophical school that recognizes the tension between meaning and a meaningless universe.
                  • Camus and Kierkegaard wrote extensively on the topic, though modern thinkers continue to contribute to the literature of the Absurd.
                  • In a politically divided time, the Absurd has come to the forefront of national discussion.

                  None

Like many Angelenos, last week I spent a fair amount of time on the LAFD's Twitter feed. As breaking information about regional wildfires was disseminated, I noticed a few comments pointing to some sort of conspiracy as the reason that so many fires were raging. Of course, numerous human-caused climate-oriented forces "conspire" in contribution to this growing problem, but that was not the implication.

Human beings are absurd creatures, a fact that the philosophical school of Absurdism addresses. The ideology represents the tension between our desire to apply meaning to a situation and living in a meaningless universe. The human brain, conspiracy theorist that it is, fills in gaps when explanations are lacking or simply invents them whole-cloth.

Two great Absurdist thinkers, Søren Kierkegaard and Albert Camus, devoted a lot of time contemplating the three responses to the tension that Absurdism spotlights, arriving at different conclusions as how to resolve it.

                  • Suicide. Exiting existence is the quickest way out, one that neither thinker advocated as effective.
                  • Belief in the transcendent. Kierkegaard felt that resolution might require an irrational leap — a recent article on science-seeking millennials believing in astrology is a more recent example of this mindset. Camus thought this method led to "philosophical suicide" and was to be avoided.
                  • Acceptance of Absurdism. Camus's advice was to create personal meaning within the meaningless, which Kierkegaard regarded as a form of madness.

These are not the only thinkers to consider the absurd. One can argue that we are living through especially absurd times in America, with two alternate realities simultaneously presented as fact. Navigating this treacherous terrain has never been easy, but it proved especially difficult in times of social turmoil. The following 10 quotes consider this topic in greater detail.

Why life is meaningless, according to absurdists | BBC Ideas

The ultimate modern absurdist, English author Douglas Adams, kicked off his classic Hitchhiker's series as a BBC radio show in 1978. While Adams left us too early at age 49 in 2001, the atheist and satirist knew how to drive into the heart of contradiction, as when he wrote in The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy,

"If there's any real truth, it's that the entire multidimensional infinity of the Universe is almost certainly being run by a bunch of maniacs."

Somali-born activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali has gotten into her share of trouble for pointing out the contradictions in religious belief systems — namely, Islam, which she was raised in. She beautifully expresses the absurdity of existence in this passage from Infidel:

"The only position that leaves me with no cognitive dissonance is atheism. It is not a creed. Death is certain, replacing both the siren-song of Paradise and the dread of Hell. Life on this earth, with all its mystery and beauty and pain, is then to be lived far more intensely: we stumble and get up, we are sad, confident, insecure, feel loneliness and joy and love. There is nothing more; but I want nothing more."

In Einstein's Monsters, British novelist and screenwriter Martin Amis takes our love of war to task by noting the absurdity of our nuclear predicament.

"What is the only provocation that could bring about the use of nuclear weapons? Nuclear weapons. What is the priority target for nuclear weapons? Nuclear weapons. What is the only established defense against nuclear weapons? Nuclear weapons. How do we prevent the use of nuclear weapons? By threatening to use nuclear weapons. And we can't get rid of nuclear weapons, because of nuclear weapons."

The medieval scholar, Caroline Walker Bynum, knows well the contradictions of past ages. In Fragmentation and Redemption she takes note of the emotional utility of a belief in resurrection.

"If there is meaning to the history we tell and the corruption (both moral and physical) we suffer, surely it is in (as well as in spite of) fragmentation. Bodily resurrection at the end of time is, in a technical sense, a comic — that is, a contrived and brave — happy ending."

The bible of Absurdist literature goes to the French philosopher, Albert Camus, who wrote one of the great philosophical texts of the 20th century with The Myth of Sisyphus and Other Essays.

"If I try to seize this self of which I feel sure, if I try to define and to summarize it, it is nothing but water slipping through my fingers. I can sketch one by one all the aspects it is able to assume, all those likewise that have been attributed to it, this upbringing, this origin, this ardor or these silences, this nobility or this vileness. But aspects cannot be added up. This very heart which is mine will forever remain indefinable to me. Between the certainty I have of my existence and the content I try to give to that assurance the gap will never be filled."

                  None

American professor and essayist Roxane Gay is one of today's most lauded feminists, for good reason: her criticism shines light where darkness has too long pervaded. In Bad Feminist, she notes that judgment in the face of contradiction is itself absurd and should not distract from the bigger message.

"No matter what issues I have with feminism, I am a feminist. I cannot and will not deny the importance and absolute necessity of feminism. Like most people, I'm full of contradictions, but I also don't want to be treated like shit for being a woman."

Italian anti-fascist poet and anarchist Renzo Novatore had quite a way with words. The early 20th-century writer reminds us in I Am Also a Nihilist that the playing field will always be tilted and that finding your place on that field is essential.

"Life — for me — is neither good nor bad, neither a theory nor an idea. Life is a reality, and the reality of life is war. For one who is a born warrior, life is a fountain of joy, for others it is only a fountain of humiliation and sorrow."

How can any list of contradictions and absurdity be complete without Belgian psychotherapist, Esther Perel? Mating in Captivity is necessary reading for anyone that wishes to be in any sort of relationship in the modern era. (Make sure to check out my 11 quotes from her as well.)

"Today, we turn to one person to provide what an entire village once did: a sense of grounding, meaning, and continuity. At the same time, we expect our committed relationships to be romantic as well as emotionally and sexually fulfilling. Is it any wonder that so many relationships crumble under the weight of it all?"

Few can put such a large sentiment in as few words as Jon Stewart.

"I have complete faith in the continued absurdity of whatever's going on."

I listed the quotes in alphabetical order by author name, yet it seems fitting to give the last word to the man that deserves it. Kurt Vonnegut is the king cynic and a brilliant writer that forces you to confront everything in existence. In Breakfast of Champions he sums up the Absurdity of our situation.

"As for myself: I had come to the conclusion that there was nothing sacred about myself or about any human being, that we were all machines, doomed to collide and collide and collide."

It was the first test of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument, or DESI, which is designed to explore the mystery of dark energy that makes up about 68% of the universe and is speeding up its expansion.

Dragon 2

Viganò dringt aan op herconsecratie Sint Pietersbasiliek

                  Cache

A UFO-themed brothel is now providing remote services for its alien sex robots

The Alien Cathouse near Las Vegas is the "final frontier of sexual adventure," a popular refuge for anyone seeking a little action in their own Area 51. From their website:

On an interstellar mission to bring erotic pleasure to the entire universe, the Cosmic Kittens from the planet Venus 69 set out on a fantastic voyage across deep space — but a freak mishap caused their starship to crash land on planet Earth just outside Nevada’s mysterious Area 51 Air Force facility. Now, stranded on a strange planet populated by so many repressed men and women fraught with a galaxy’s worth of lust, the Cosmic Kittens have vowed to use their extraterrestrial sexual prowess to help horny Earthlings satisfy their insatiable carnal desires.

In addition to escorts, fetish services, and plush alien dolls already offered at the Cathouse, they'll soon be offering a cutting-edge teledildonics program. According to the Daily Mail, the Cathouse is investing heavily in KIIROO's remote sex robot technology, so that customers can enjoy their services even in a galaxy far, far away. "Visitors" to the remote alien brothel would need to provide their own Interactive Vibrating Masturbator for Men or OhMiBod toy and presumably a stable wifi connection in order to get the full haptic experience.

The Cathouse’s Rod Thompson told Daily Star Online why they have added a robot to their line-up: "For clients that have certain … fetishes that courtesans might not be interested in, the robot could fulfill those."

Asked how the Cathouse’s flesh-and-blood denizens felt about working alongside an AI rival, Rod said they were all for it: "The Courtesans are actually excited about the additional revenue stream to Alien Cathouse, and themselves … as well as the additional opportunities that might present themselves for interested parties wanting to party with a real flesh and blood courtesan and with an AI sex robot at the same time."

It's only fitting that the most technologically advanced brothel in the country would be sci-fi themed. Read the rest

At Mysterious Universe, Paul Seaburn writes:

In what can be considered an unusual convergence of conspiracy theories, a man who runs a Bigfoot videos YouTube channel was chasing chemtrails when he claimed to have recorded a UFO chasing them as well. If you’re playing Conspiracy Scrabble, ‘Chemtrail’, ‘Bigfoot’ and ‘UFO’ is a triple-word score.

According to his commentary during the video, Marc Abell –the CEO of Colorado Bigfoot, a provider of Bigfoot videos – was recording a plane making a contrail over a snow-covered terrain in Vail, Colorado, and believed the color and shape changes in the contrail were signs that the plane was actually spraying something rather than just trailing the usual water vapor and jet exhaust.

That's when Abell spotted the UFO.
