Malakai Takes A Load In His Ass Part 1

Cache

Malakai is back on his knees waiting for more dick. This visitor makes sure we don't even catch a glimpse of what he looks like as he shows up in his hoodie. He can barely get to the glory hole as he quickly unbuttions his jeans and reveals a nice piece of throbbing meat. Malakai waste no time as he takes his visitors dick balls deep. This has to be the best blowjob the visitor has ever had because his tight ass flexes as he moves as close as he can to feed Malakai as much of his rod as he can. Malakai recognizes just how hard the visitor is as he continues to swallow his cock and massage his balls. The visitor moans in extacy as Malakai plays with his own cock and ass thru his sweat pants. Just as we think the visitor is about to cum, Malakai lubes his ass up and gets ready for the ride of his life. As the visitor thrust his big dick thru the hole and deep inside Malakai's hole, they each moan in pleasure. After some intense fucking, the feeling proves to be too much for the visitor as he shoots his huge load deep in Malakai's ass as it spews out of his hole and drips down his leg. Malakai drops to his knees because he has to have one more taste of the visitors cock before he leaves. As the visitor zips up and leaves, Malakai jerks his beautiful cock until he shoots his creamy load all over the floor. Another one down, he says.

Jizz On My Foot Doc Part 3

Cache

I was rough housing his my boys after an intense basketball game and I think I twisted my ankle. It was really tender so I hobbled over to the doctor's office and met with one of the male nurses. Since it was my first time there he just wanted to go thru the motions and check my vitals. I didn't think much of it but thru the corner of my eye I saw him check me out when I was in my underwear. I kinda have a foot fetish but never messed around with a guy before and once he stuck my toes in his mouth my kinky mind took over and I started to think with my dick. Next thing I knew we were blowing each other! I'd never sucked a dick before but it was not as bad as I thought..I kinda enjoyed it. Next thing I know he's busting his load on my foot which made me cum so hard! He took his cum and scooped up my cum and he rubbed it on my foot and wrapped it. I don't know but it sure did make me feel a lot better.

World: More than 52 million people across Africa going hungry as weather extremes hit the continent [EN/AR]

Cache

Source: Oxfam
Country: World, Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe

Millions displaced; women, girls hit hardest; crises compounded by conflicts, poverty and inequality; $700m average climate-related losses; urgent action needed now

More than 52 million people in 18 countries across southern, eastern and central Africa are facing up to crisis levels of hunger as a result of weather extremes, compounded by poverty and conflict.

Some areas are facing a second extreme drought in four years and worse than that sparked by El Nino in 1981.

In the South, parts of Zimbabwe have had their lowest rainfall since 1981 which has helped push more than 5.5m people into extreme food insecurity. Zambia’s rich maize-growing area has been decimated and exports are now banned; 2.3m people there are food insecure. The situation is worsening including in Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Madagascar, Namibia and Zimbabwe. There are reports of farmer suicides in South Africa.

Drought has also hit the East and Horn of Africa particularly Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia. At the same time, record-breaking temperatures in the Indian Ocean have dumped ultra-heavy rainfalls into Kenya and South Sudan, causing flash-flooding especially along major river arteries. South Sudan has declared a state of emergency with more than 900,000 people hit by floods.

In Africa extreme weather events have hit many countries already suffering from ongoing conflict. Across the continent, 7.6 million people were displaced by conflict in the first six months of 2019, and another 2.6 million by extreme weather. In the Horn, Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan and Sudan have simultaneously faced over 750 000 people displaced by conflict and 350 000 displaced by extreme weather.

Scientists have demonstrated how climate change is increasing the frequency or severity of many extreme weather events. Over the last decade, these 18 African countries have collectively suffered average annual losses of $700m from climate-related disasters– and this is without counting the cost of these latest crises, says Oxfam. However, there has been minimal progress globally in raising funds specifically to address loss and damage from climate change. Africa contributes less than 5% of total global emissions but is suffering some of the most severe impacts of the climate crisis.

Officials will meet at the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) in Durban Nov 11-15 to discuss the future of Africa’s “environmental sustainability and prosperity”. Oxfam urges ministers to demand that industrial nations honor their promises to avoid escalating human and financial costs and to pay for damages.

“We are witnessing millions of already poor people facing extreme food insecurity and exhausting their reserves because of compounding climate shocks that hit already vulnerable communities hardest. They need help urgently. The scale of the drought devastation across southern Africa is staggering,” said Oxfam’s Southern Africa Regional Director Nellie Nyang'wa.

“In western Kenya, the crop harvest is 25% down and in parts of Somalia up to 60%. Livestock in many rural areas are emaciated and milk production is down. Cereal prices in some areas have rocketed up to five-year highs, pricing out poorer people. Nearly 7m people in the region are living just below the catastrophic hunger line,” said Oxfam’s Horn, East and Central Africa regional director Lydia Zigomo. “It is a vicious cycle where poor and marginalized communities, mostly women and girls, are more exposed to the climate crisis and less able to cope and recover from its harm.”.

Mithika Mwenda, chief executive of Oxfam’s partner PACJA, said “communities at the frontline of this climate crisis are overstretched and may be facing potential annihilation. But local people are doing everything that can to overcome the challenge. There are unprecedented levels of organization happening where governments have let local people down.”

“We’re seeing people trying to cope with shifting seasons and erratic rainfall by finding new ways to make a living off-farm. Women are coming together to pool their resources through small internal lending communities, buying food together, growing sweet potatoes instead of maize – all without outside support. Local people have the solutions but what they lack is resources, especially funding.

“Our leaders should look to support these community solutions to build up people’s resilience to climate change. For 35 years AMCEN has been a very important platform with impactful policies that have helped to create awareness of environmental sustainability. It needs to move away now from policy making to policy implementation.”

Oxfam is currently reaching more than 7 million people in ten of the hardest hit countries with food and water support, and long-term development projects to help people cope better with climate-related shocks. Oxfam plans to reach 10% of those most in need in these ten countries and is trying to raise $65m to do so.

Oxfam is calling on African ministers at the AMCEN meeting to:
• Insist rich industrialised countries decrease their CO2 emissions in line with the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting global heating to below 1.5C, and honour their commitment to mobilise $100bn a year by 2020 to fund climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts in developing countries;
• Demand governments agree to develop a new funding mechanism for “loss and damage” from climate change at the upcoming UN climate conference (COP25);
• Invest more into universal, high-quality and gender-responsive public services and strengthen tax systems in African countries to close the gap between rich and poor;
• Improve their disaster warning and management systems, and commit to re-greening and agricultural policies that target women and men small-scale farmers;
• Invest in “social accountability” projects that ensures climate finance can reach the communities that need it most, and empowering them in their own decision-making
• Engage women and girls in the planning, design and implementation of early warning systems and climate mitigation and adaptation programs
• Protect people who are forced to move so that they are able to do so in safety, dignity and on their own terms.

The 18 African countries analysed are Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Oxfam’s estimate of economic damages from climate-related disasters is based on figures from EM-DAT: The Emergency Events Database: www.emdat.be. Oxfam's estimate of displacement from extreme weather events and from conflict if based on figure from IDMC : Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre: https://God.blue/splash.php?url=P6gwgdok_PLUS__SLASH_qZejL64E_PLUS_xWfBxV_SLASH_uK1S9pmiAaLpYF3DRShN1idaqIIWD_PLUS_RCgIbe12ZoHwGZn6AOOfHBcIE_PLUS_B9EWeS2LySdmlWHpypCZ85fi0zmesNZXK8CBFsZWimKK3K

In 2013, CoP agreed to establish the Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage which outlines the responsibility of rich developed nations to help communities overcome the loss and damage from climate disasters. Since then, zero progress has been made in ensuring financial support for loss and damage to these communities.

Bankers Fleeing New York

Cache

I suspect that this is mostly of interest to the few remaining holdouts. That is to the few New Yorkers who have not yet moved away from Comrade de Blasio’s failing city.

At the least, it’s an important sign of the times. New York City had been a financial hub. Roughly as Hong Kong was for China and East Asia. Wall Street had kept the city afloat, had flooded the city with money, supporting the legal profession, shops, restaurants, private schools, what have you. Today, as the city is losing its banking business, it is trying to attract more and more high tech firms, though the Queens Amazon debacle was certainly not a good sign.

So, what happens to New York City when financial service moves out of town? We have already noticed the billionaire Carl Icahn’s move out of New York to Miami will deplete the city’s tax revenue. Since 1% of the people pay 40% of New York’s taxes, when financial services move out the city will surely suffer.

The same issue dogs the protests in Hong Kong. Among the issues in that city is whether China needs Hong Kong more than Hong Kong needs China. After all, the city is a financial hub. But, what would happen if Chinese leaders decide to shift business to Shanghai or Shenzhen. It’s well and good to protest for freedom, but what if the money starts leaving town?

So, JPMorgan Chase, one of the world’s biggest banks is moving more and more people out of New York. The story suggests that the bank is preparing for the next economic downturn, but surely, the fact that quality of life and cost of living are better in other parts of the country has also been a determining factor. Perhaps the principle determining factor.

Zero Hedge reports:

A new report via Bloomberg details how JPMorgan Chase & Co. is preparing for the next economic downturn by weighing the option to relocate its Manhattan headquarters to lower-cost financial hubs such as ones in Plano, Texas; Columbus, Ohio; and Wilmington, Delaware.

JPM spokesman Joe Evangelisti told Bloomberg the bank's new headquarters (likely to be in Texas), will house twice the number of employees than its Manhattan office.

Sources told Bloomberg that hundreds of credit-risk employees have already transferred to Texas. Other sources have said Manhattan will no longer be the location for the bank's compliance.

Think about it, the company headquarters in Plano, Texas will be bigger than the headquarters in New York.

While JPM CEO Jamie Dimon told investors the bank would build a new headquarters at 270 Park Ave, in Midtown Manhattan, it has also quietly constructed a new building that can house 4,000 employees in the Dallas suburb of Plano. Already, JPM has 25,000 employees in Texas, and if the next recession strikes, it seems that the bank has a clear choice to move operations to a low-cost hub to weather the financial storm

JPMorgan Chase is not alone. Its actions are part of an exodus:

Bloomberg noted that other large financial institutions had been exiting NYC for lower-cost commercial hubs across the country.

Deutsche Bank expanded operations in Jacksonville, Florida; Goldman Sachs has built officers in Salt Lake City; and AllianceBernstein Holding LP announced plans to move its headquarters to Nashville, Tennessee.

Keeping employees happy means allowing them a good quality of life. High taxes and astronomically high rents and real estate prices have made it nearly impossible for any but the wealthiest to live comfortably in New York. And the city keeps imposing regulations that make it more difficult to do business:

The cost to run a company in NYC has skyrocketed in the last decade. Also, regulations and taxes in the city are some of the highest in the country.

In total, the bank has 37,000 employees across NYC, at least half are bank branch workers, a source told Bloomberg. Once construction at 270 Park Ave is completed, expected in 2023, JPM could consolidate employees across the entire metro area.

As for the next big trend in business, Wall Street banks are already making their exit plans out of NYC to lower-cost financial hubs across the country.

Most of those who are remaining are working at the network of branches that dot the city. One suspects that, what with the advent of online banking, those people will soon find their jobs taken over by AI.

Help with "original Costumes" on display

Cache

Need some Expert opinions here please...
There is a man who has been moving from city to city in Germany with his "original" james Bond Costumes and Props and it has already arisen that he lied about one item (on TV!) as he said he owned one of the 3 original Jetpack Rocket Belts from Thunderball... It turns out that it is a cheap fake knocked together from DIY parts (this has been confirmed by William Suitor, the oroginal Rocket Belt Pilot)

I would like to post a few photos and ask the opinions of the experts here on a few of the items.. I can show more if the interest is great enough... this is just the tip of the iceberg.

People pay hard earned money to see this and being told it is real..... maybe some of it is, that's why I'd like the experts here to have a look!

Jae Crowder gets hit in groin by James Harden, called for foul, ejected (video)

If the over-the-top dancing travel call on James Harden was cathartic for anyone bothered by the Rockets' perpetual rule-bender, this was nearly the opposite. Late in Houston's win over the Grizzlies last night, Memphis forward Jae Crowder got hit in the groin by Harden. Yet, Crowder got whistled for a foul – and ejected for arguing the call.

What Paul George's impending return means for the Clippers

Cache

The Los Angeles Clippers, who dismissed the rival Lakers to open the season and look dominant with reigning Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard at the helm of the operation, are a week away from gaining strength. Days after ramping up his practice workload over the weekend, injured six-time All-Star Paul George is still targeting the middle of next week for his return to game action, The Athletic's Sam Amick reported. The Clips are reportedly planning for George to debut on the road against either the Houston Rockets on Nov. 13 or the New Orleans Pelicans the following night, resting on one end of that back-to-back.

By Failing to Maintain Its Deterrence in the Middle East, the U.S. Is Emboldening Iran

Cache

According to a recent State Department report, the Islamic Republic attempted nearly 100 attacks, hostage takings, and the like between May and September of this year, of which 40 were successful. The most notable of these include the attack on Saudi Arabia’s Abqaiq oil refinery (the world’s largest), the harassment of oil tankers in and around the Persian Gulf, and the firing of rockets at U.S. troops in Iraq. In addition, Tehran has been openly violating the 2015 nuclear deal. Whatever the merits of the American drawdown in northeastern Syria, writes John Hannah, it confirms the impression that Washington is unwilling to use force in response to Iran’s behavior:
President Trump’s response to the most serious incidents has by now fallen into a predictable pattern of issuing over-the-top verbal threats (to “end” or “obliterate” Iran), imposing further economic sanctions, deploying additional troops and weapons to the Gulf, and, on at least two occasions, launching limited cyberattacks against Iran. . . . By now it’s abundantly clear that the administration’s playbook to deter further Iranian escalation has not worked. Tehran has continued to escalate. Based on the experience of the past several months, it’s hard not to believe that Iran’s leaders have come to the conclusion that for all Trump’s bombast, he wants no part of a military dustup. . . . The alternative to taking meaningful steps to reestablish the credibility of America’s will to use force is simply to sit back, absorb Iran’s provocations, and wait until the regime caves to the steadily mounting pressure of U.S. sanctions. It’s by no means impossible for it to work eventually—Iran’s economy is being absolutely hammered. But the big question is how long it will take and what amount of damage an increasingly desperate Iranian regime, unconstrained by the fear of U.S. military retaliation, is capable of inflicting in the meantime on the interests of the United States and its friends and allies. If the brazen attack on Abqaiq is any indication, the answer may be a great deal of damage indeed.

Responding to the Hong Kong protests

Cache

By Mike Poteet

A controversial tweet

In early October, Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey tweeted a simple image that read “Fight for Freedom. Stand With Hong Kong.” This tweet, which would seem innocuous to many in the United States, drew immediate and sustained backlash from both Chinese officials and businesses due to the complicated, contentious relationship between China and Hong Kong, a semiautonomous territory that, unlike mainland China, operates as a limited democracy with a capitalist economy.

According to the Associated Press, the Chinese consulate in Houston expressed “strong dissatisfaction” with the team following Morey’s tweet; and both Chinese state television and Tencent, a streaming media company with whom the NBA recently signed a $1.5 billion deal, announced they wouldn’t show Rockets games.

Yet the protests that have taken place in Hong Kong this summer and fall hold far more significance than the relationship between the NBA and China. That they should have any impact at all on something as far afield as pro sports only underscores their significance and the serious political crisis they represent.

Months of protest

According to a New York Times article from last June, the protests initially arose in opposition to a bill considered by Hong Kong’s legislative body, the Legislative Council. The bill would have allowed the territory to extradite criminal suspects to jurisdictions with which it has no formal extradition treaty, including mainland China.

Observers warned that the Chinese government could use the bill to exert increased pressure on Hong Kong. “If enacted, this law would extend the ability of the Mainland authorities to target critics, human rights activists, journalist[s], NGO workers and anyone else in Hong Kong, much in the same way they do at home,” stated Man-Kei Tam, director of Amnesty International Hong Kong.

On June 9, more than a million people marched in opposition to the bill — nearly one of every seven Hong Kongers and the biggest public protest Hong Kong had seen since the pro-democracy Umbrella Movement of 2014. A New York Times video shows that police used tear gas against protesters on June 12, along with pepper spray, rubber bullets and batons, after a small number of protesters threw objects at them. Anger over the police response inspired even larger protests on June 16, when as many as two million people came together in the largest protest in Hong Kong’s history.

Carrie Lam, Hong Kong’s Beijing-appointed chief executive, withdrew the extradition bill in early September, but the withdrawal wasn’t enough to bring protests to an end. One commonly heard chant — “Five demands, not one less” — refers to the protesters’ aims. The first was the withdrawal of the extradition bill; the others include (1) no more descriptions of the protests as “riots,” (2) unconditional release and amnesty for arrested protesters, (3) independent inquiry into police behavior, and (4) full and genuine democracy.

Throughout the summer and into autumn, protests continued and were increasingly marked by violent confrontations between demonstrators and police. On October 1 — a holiday that marked the 70th anniversary of the Communist state founded in 1949 — police shot a protester with live ammunition for the first time.

CNBC reported that on October 4, Lam invoked emergency powers and banned face masks at all public gatherings, claiming the move would deter violence because demonstrators cannot conceal their identities. (Many protesters wear masks and respirators to guard against tear gas.) The ban provoked a fresh wave of fiery protests. Lam’s critics worry what further actions might follow and how those actions might weaken Hong Kong’s special status, which they believe China has been steadily eroding.

Mixed U.S. responses

In mid-October, the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act. It would require the State Department to certify every year “whether Hong Kong remains sufficiently autonomous from Beijing [China] to justify its unique treatment,” as quoted in The Washington Post. This unique treatment includes exemptions from tariffs and other U.S. laws that apply to all other Chinese exports. If the bill clears the Senate, where it has bipartisan support, it would need President Trump’s signature to become law.

Publicly, Trump hasn’t spoken much about the protests, but the Financial Times reports that he promised Chinese president Xi Jinping that the United States would “tone down criticism of Beijing’s approach” in order to revive trade talks. However, at the United Nations in September, Trump called on China to honor its commitment to “protect Hong Kong’s freedom, legal system and democratic ways of life,” adding, “We are all counting on President Xi as a great leader,” as quoted in Vox.

Some American businesses find themselves caught between democratic ideals and the pursuit of profit. The NBA, for instance, forced Daryl Morey to apologize for his tweet, then issued its own apology while simultaneously trying to defend free speech, a response that pleased neither Chinese officials nor many US observers. Meanwhile, Apple pulled a map app from its digital store that protesters had been using to track police movement, and shoe company Vans pulled the top vote-getter in a sneaker design competition because the design depicted the protests.

Christian response

“The Chinese Communist Party may be the greatest existential threat to the Hong Kong church,” notes Christianity Today. Nevertheless, about 900,000 Hong Kongers (almost 12%) are Christian, and Christians enjoy more freedom in Hong Kong than believers in mainland China.

Several church organizations in Hong Kong expressed concern about the extradition bill while calling for restraint and peace from protesters. According to a United Methodist News Service article, the ecumenical Hong Kong Christian Council issued a statement urging the reopening of now-closed public spaces for peaceful demonstration, restraint from using force on the part of police, and dialogue and “rational discussion” between the government and protesters.

Many Christians in Hong Kong have joined the protests themselves. In late August, the first large-scale rally specifically for Christians drew thousands. Its motto was “Salt and light, for justice we walk together.” Attendees formed part of a human chain stretching for more than 21 miles and sang the hymn “Sing Alleluia to the Lord,” which quickly became an unofficial “anthem” for the Hong Kong protests — partly because religious gatherings are exempt from Hong Kong legislation regulating public assemblies.

For believers who choose to participate in the protests, taking to the streets to defend their civil liberties and advocate for greater freedom is an expression of how they understand the gospel. Andrea Wong, an 18-year-old protester, told The New York Times, “I am very certain that Jesus would not have stayed home enjoying the air-conditioning. He would have been out here helping people and marching.”

"The Fools Are Rushing in Again"

"The Fools Are Rushing in Again"
by Brian Maher

"As a bad penny returns to its sender, or a dog returns to its vomit… investors are returning to the stock market. “All in” these gentlemen and ladies are going (or at least the computer algorithms that set market pace). Lance Roberts of Real Inves‌tment Advice: "With cash levels at the lowest level since 1997 and equity allocations near the highest levels since 1999 and 2007, it suggests investors are now functionally “all in.”

You may recall sharply unpleasant events subsequent to 1999 and 2007 - after investors had become “all in.” Now that they are once again marshalling their poker chips… and shoving them out onto table’s center. Will Mr. Market break them once more - or do they possibly play a lucky hand this time?

First this question: Why are these gamesters going “all in” now? We believe we have the answer, revealed anon. We first note the stock market has once again scaled the impossible heights…

Is a “Melt-up” Back in Play? All three major indexes have recently established fresh records. And so the market has scaled its cliff face of worry. Trade war, impeachment inquiry, a fading global economy, Brexit, the devil and any number of impediments... it has clawed above them all. Affirms analyst Andrew Brenner of National Alliance: "Brexit, impeachment, budget deficit, lack of a budget - none of those things are affecting the market at this point."

It is - in the parlance of the trade - “risk on.” Our spies even report fresh speculation about a possible “melt-up.” A melt-up is the glorious terminal phase of a bull market, when stocks reach fever heat - before melting down. Melt-ups have preceded some of history's greatest collapses. In the 18 months prior to the Crash of ’29, for example, the stock market nearly doubled. And the Nasdaq rocketed 200% in the 18 months before the dot-com mania peaked in 2000.

Yet that is a topic for an altogether different day. Let us instead concentrate our focus on this early November day... The market slightly lost its footing today. It nonetheless held the vertical. The Dow Jones ended the day precisely where it began the day. The S&P took two piddling steps higher, the Nasdaq took 24 steps down. Gold, meantime, advanced nearly $9 today. But to return to our question: Why are investors rushing back in now?

4 Possible Reasons Stocks Are Rising: Several reasons suggest themselves...

Reasons 1: The Federal Reserve sliced interest rates last week - the third occasion this year - and for a total of 75 basis points. And as explains Raymond James: "Over the last 30 years, when the Fed has implemented an “insurance” rate cut policy of 75 basis points, the equity market has been “lights out” as the S&P 500 has posted a 12-month forward return of about 23%, on average.

Reasons 2: Markets are again hopeful the United States and China will come to terms on trade. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross announced yesterday the combatants were making excellent progress toward a “phase one” trade accord. A successful resolution would lift tariffs on some $156 billion of Chinese exports, presently scheduled to enter force Dec. 15. (Negotiations appear to have faltered somewhat today… for what it is worth.)

Reasons 3: Corporate stock buybacks this year - despite recent slackening - should nonetheless turn in their second-largest year on record.

Reasons 4: Stocks as a whole are surpassing earnings estimates.

These reasons and more we can cite. But do they haul the full cargo of explanation? We are unconvinced.

Look to the Federal Reserve: Is the primary reason the stock market once again scales record heights… and that poker chips are piling up on the table’s center… Because the Federal Reserve has been slyly hosing in floods of liquidity? The short-term lending market nearly seized in September as liquidity ran dry. The Federal Reserve’s New York command center therefore grabbed the hoses… and gave the “repo” market a good soaking. A temporary expedient, they labeled it. But long experience teaches that nothing can be so permanent as a temporary expedient.

Our agents inform us the New York Federal Reserve has emptied in some $250 billion since September. We hazard a healthful portion of that $250 billion has gone to funding speculative activity on Wall Street. And the hoses pump yet.

Furthermore, this we have on the Federal Reserve’s own word: these same hoses will pump “at least” through next year’s second quarter. Jerome Powell insists these “open market operations” are not quantitative easing. Apologists claim they are merely plugging a leak within the financial plumbing. And in detail, they may well be correct. But these operations have expanded the Federal Reserve’s balance sheet... precisely as if they were quantitative easing.

QE4? The balance sheet expanded over $50 billion last week alone and exceeds $4 trillion. “The Fed can deny that they’re doing quantitative easing,” argues permanent bear Peter Schiff - who styles current operations QE4. He adds: “But they can’t hide the numbers. They can’t hide their balance sheet.”

Is QE4, as you style it, even larger than QE3, Mr. Schiff? The Fed is expanding its balance sheet right now at about twice the pace that it was expanding its balance sheet when it was doing QE3. So QE4, whether they admit it or not, is much, much bigger than QE3, and it’s going to continue, and it is going to accelerate. And is QE4 responsible for the latest stock market spree?

And that is what is driving the stock market… They’re doing quantitative easing, and they’re going to print as much money as they have to keep the markets going up and to keep the economy propped up. Just so. But stocks are vastly expensive by history’s standards. By some measures today’s valuations rise even above 1929’s and 2008’s. Will today’s lemmings make much money in this stock market - as they go hoofing for the cliff? The odds strike us as… slim. That is because the higher things rise, the further they fall.

A Losing Bet: Assume today’s obscene valuations. From these heights, history argues the Dow Jones may plunge some 35% next time.* Meantime, we understand that options traders are lowering their guard of late. These fine folks take out “call” options in anticipation market gains. They conversely take out “put” options to insure against losses. When the number of calls runs too far ahead of puts, it is evidence the guard is down. And a lowered guard invites a blow. That presently appears to be the case.

The last occasion the ratio of calls to puts attained current highs was on Jan. 23, 2018 - immediately prior to a market thumping. We must assume investors presently streaming into the stock market will come ultimately to grief… as they did in 2001… and 2008. When precisely, we do not know. But “experience keeps a dear school,” as Benjamin Franklin affirmed two centuries ago - and “fools will learn in no other.”

* "EvG predicts, “All of these bubble assets that are based on just credit and credit expansion are going to implode measured in real terms, measured in gold. I expect the stock market and the property market to lose at least 95% or more in real terms. The next up cycle for gold (and silver) has started. The next phase of this market has started, and it is going to go on for a long, long time. It is going to go to levels that will be hard to believe today. The world cannot have solid growth until this debt has imploded. The transition will be terrible, but I don’t see any other solution to this. The debt can only be wiped out by also wiping out all the asset values. You can’t just make the debt disappear and have the assets stand there at the values that they are today. When this debt is written off or implodes, or whatever they want to call it, that means all these assets are going to go down. That’s why I am saying it is going to go down 95% against gold. There is absolutely no other way, in my view.”

The Kids Are All Right

Cache

A second generation returns to run one of Richmond’s restaurant empires.

Kyle Healy remembers the exact moment he decided to move home to be closer to his parents and siblings.

Driving back to New York from a happy family vacation, Kyle’s wife, entrepreneur Naa-Sakle Akuete said, “You know, I’m self-employed so I can work anywhere. The only thing keeping us from moving to Richmond is you.”

And Healy thought, she’s right. Let’s do it.

The moment is remarkable because Healy, at age 34, was leaving a 10-year career that began with interning and then producing for comedian and late-night host Stephen Colbert. And for what? To come to Richmond and run a restaurant.

Granted, it’s not just any restaurant. It’s the Housepitality Family’s collection of Boathouse and Casa del Barco locations, Richmond institutions started by Kevin Healy 32 years ago when he bought the Sunday Park restaurant in Midlothian.

Healy has built one of Richmond’s most successful restaurant empires. Housepitality Family now operates eight restaurants, including two that opened last month. The restaurants are full of repeat customers. Employees stay for years, sometimes decades.

At the beginning of September, Kyle joined his brother Colin and sister Paige to begin taking over the Housepitality Family business. The debut of Island Shrimp Co., their new tropical food spot in Chesterfield, shows that a former comedy producer, a musician and an outdoor leadership trainer can not only run a restaurant empire, they might even do it better than dad.

The Healys will become Richmond’s first family of the restaurant world — operating one of the largest restaurant groups in the city, and among the few moving into second-generation management.

The Prodigal Daughter

Paige, 32, was the first of the family to return home.

Those who knew her growing up describe her as an energetic tomboy, busing tables at Sunday Park. With an athletic build and loose blond hair, Paige is constantly in motion. She majored in outdoor education and leadership, with a minor in ceramics. The ceramics eventually won out.

“I’ve always been very passionately creative,” she says. “I wanted more opportunity for creativity and the Rocketts Landing location had just opened. Suddenly my dad went from a single restaurant owner to a team.”

This team of people was doing events, working on operations and opening new locations, she says. “The team concept was very interesting because there was a creative aspect: What does the menu look like? How do we keep enhancing it, how do we keep locations feeling the same? I knew I wanted to add to it.”

In early 2013, Paige left her job at a nonprofit in Wyoming and got serious about food. She moved to Italy and attended culinary school. In 2015 she returned to Richmond with an Italian husband, Gregorio Spinzo, who now runs Dinner in the Field.

“I didn’t think any of them would come back,” says Deana Chiocca, who has tended and managed the bars at Sunday Park (and Rocketts) since before Healy bought the place, when Paige was barely a toddler.

“They were always around, and they would help out wherever they could,” Chiocca remembers. “But then Paige had a good thing going out West. Kyle went up to New York and Comedy Central — how do you leave that? And Colin is so passionate about his music. Kevin and Peggy always encouraged them to make their own choices.”

Dad may have encouraged independence, but he was elated at Paige’s return.

“It’s every parent’s dream,” he says. “Friends would say, ‘You want your kids to take over, but Paige is majoring in outdoor leadership,’ and I’d say, ‘Gee, sounds like management to me, it’s perfect.’”

The Musician

Colin had stayed in Richmond, holding down his half of Colin & Caroline, a music duo he started with high-school sweetheart, now wife, Caroline Mauck.

The two made some local headlines when pop star Kesha tweeted their cover of her song “Die Young” to her more than 3 million followers and they become YouTube darlings, their music featured on the Netflix show, “13 Reasons Why.”

But Colin began realizing a few years ago that while he could never abandon music, he wanted a more stable income than online music downloads. Now 29, he had been working off and on at the restaurants since he was 12, also doing some graphic design and recording work. The two also occasionally play in Boathouse restaurants.

“A lot of people consider the restaurant industry risky,” Colin says. “But when you’re coming into it from the music industry, it feels pretty safe.”

A musician with a quiet, almost dreamy demeanor and a perpetual soft smile may not seem obviously destined for the financial arm of the business, but his father saw it differently.

“Colin was our youngest, the first to grow up with all the technology,” Kevin says. “And in business now, programs and computers are what’s driving back-end operations. He’s a whiz at this stuff.”

When Housepitality installed a new accounting software program two years ago, Dad offered Colin an opportunity to join the company full time. He spent six months immersed in learning and implementing the new program, then moved to overseeing the financial team.

When Kyle mentioned a few months ago that he was seriously considering moving to Richmond, his family sensed a tectonic shift.

“The pull of a family business is strong,” Kyle says. “And after 10 years of doing anything, if it’s not as exciting to you as the day you started, it’s time to look around. I was appreciating my family more and more, and we decided that if we moved to Richmond we could have something really special.”

Paige felt it too. “We all have different superpowers, and when we come together we are like Captain Planet,” she says.

“We’ve been trying to get my brother to move down for 10 years,” Colin says. “The three of us are a very strong unit. We’re about to kick into high gear here because we are all back together.”

Kyle’s take on the superpower reunion invites a laugh.

“Hopefully they like having me back down here,” he says. “They always said they missed me so now we can put that to the test.”

New management style

The Housepitality Family’s success has been based less on creative cutting-edge food and more on Healy’s early training in chain restaurant management and his ability to anticipate trends. For example, he located the Boathouse at Rocketts Landing far before the area was trendy. As the first retail business, it pulled in other development.

Healy is an operations specialist who loves checklists and extensive training programs, making sure that every guest’s experience — from the garnish on an oyster sampler plate to the polished front door to the dining room music settings —is exactly right and exactly the same each time.

“Checklists are a good example of how to create efficiencies to run a better business,” says Matthew Adler, a former chef and now owner of MRA Culinary Solutions consulting firm in Washington “That’s more important today because restaurant profitability is lower than ever.”

Rising labor costs and shortages are now the biggest challenge to food service profitability, but Housepitality’s newest restaurant, Island Shrimp Co., introduces some trendy solutions for running a sit-down restaurant with fewer staff.

For example, guests can slip a colored coaster-sized card into a wire stand to catch a server’s attention. And they fill out their own orders on pre-printed paper menus. These small tweaks help each server manage a greater number of tables, while maintaining a high level of service for guests.

Adler says that good management right now is about operating any food establishment using less labor.

“This can involve maximizing technology, like a guest orders through an iPad, electronic order system or orders through an app ahead of time,” Adler says. “That reduces that touch point and having to pay an hourly rate to someone.”

Another trend evident in Island Shrimp’s design is architectural — the use of freight containers in the building. Freight containers are a modern and sustainable building material gaining traction in London, New York and other major cities, but firsts for Richmond.

The Island Shrimp team also went on research trips to taste dishes on menus from Hawaii to Jamaica.

“I don’t know anyone else who does that, sends the chef traveling,” says Bryan Gradwell, who has been the Performance Food Group’s salesman for the Boarthouse for 20 years. “In the early days, Kevin would take all the employees up to D.C. or somewhere to try out different restaurants for a day. Kevin is always looking ahead, into the future.”

What’s interesting is that Island Shrimp’s smart, trendy details didn’t come from the Healy patriarch.

“My dad said, ‘Let’s open a place based on shrimp, it’s the number one seafood seller,’” Paige says. “And then he totally gave it to me. It was the right time for me to take the reins. I was hungry for it.”

A steady transition

The kids are ready to jump in, but the ownership transition will be slow.

At age 65, Healy isn’t ready to fully back away just yet. Partly because his heirs, especially newcomer Kyle, still have a lot to learn. Kyle is tall, like his dad, and he has his dad’s deadpan sense of humor. He’s coming up to speed by rotating through all the restaurant departments, including serving, hosting and bartending.

“I always thought bartending was about mixing and serving drinks,” he says. “I never realized how much of it is wiping. Wiping and cleaning.”

Colin is the chief financial officer and Paige is the chief creative officer. Kyle jokingly titles himself trainee-in-chief.

“This is the first time I’ve worked with my siblings professionally and it’s given me a whole new way to appreciate them, not just as a nice brother and sister but as savvy businesspeople,” he says. “Every time I walk into one of the spaces Paige has designed, I’m blown away. And watching Colin go through the week’s financials, talking about cost of goods sold, profit and loss, I can’t believe this is my little brother.”

Another reason for a gradual transition of ownership is that the family wants to craft a business agreement that gives Healy back the value he has invested in the business. In other words, the kids must earn the company — it’s not a free lunch.

Healy also wants to make sure there are no surprises for his longtime management team, for whom the average tenure is 17 plus years.

“I don’t plan to be less involved,” Healy says. “I just intend for the kids to be more involved.”

So far, many at Housepitality sound downright excited.

“We’ve all been very impressed,” says Deana Chiocca. “I see more of Paige than the others and she is just fantastic. Her vision and design have really taken hold. How could Kevin and Peggy not be proud? Your kids go off and do their thing and then come back.”

Apparently, the family that works together stays together. The Healys not only share a business, but they and their spouses plan to continue their tradition of taking a big family vacation together every year. Healy echoes his children’s enthusiasm when he talks about what the future holds.

“I’ve been doing this for a long time, but now I kind of feel like our group is only just getting going. There are so many possibilities and so many directions we can go. It’s very exciting.”

Stihl MS500i Chainsaw with 25" Bar

Stihl MS500i Chainsaw with 25

Stihl MS500i Chainsaw with 25" Bar

First ever chainsaw with STIHL Injection Technology. The best power-to-weight ratio on the market, and the simplest operation. Ideally suited to arboriculture and harvesting and processing large timber. All thanks to its unique lightweight design and outstanding acceleration. New bumper spikes, HD2 filter, captive nut on the sprocket cover for easy chain change, controlled-delivery oil pump, and tool-free fuel cap for safe and easy filling with fuels and lubricants. Features and Benefits: STIHL Injection (i) - STIHL injection technology enables the MS 500i to achieve extremely high performance with extraordinarily low displacement and low weight. The saw uses innovative technology to achieve rapid acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h?in an unbelievable 0.25 seconds. The powerful saw is ready to use right away. Sensors measure air pressure and internal and external temperature, and pass information on to the control unit. This can use the identified values to determine the optimum fuel quantity and ignition timing. Best power-to-weight ratio - Its revolutionary chainsaw engine technology, and resulting intelligent lightweight construction result in the best power-to-weight ratio on the market. The optimised design – with lightweight sprocket cover, more compact engine unit, flywheel with a low design height, and a reduced-weight crankshaft adapted to the low weight of the flywheel – makes work significantly more comfortable. The MS 500i is ideal for heavy timber felling, cutting into lengths, and pruning. Decompression valve - The decompression valve is part of the easy starting system. The valve should be pressed before starting to reduce the compression pressure when starting, as well as reducing the effort needed to pull the starter rope. The decompression valve is semi-automatic; it must be pressed manually before starting, but then closes automatically. Sensor-controlled fuel metering - In addition to the external temperature sensor, the MS 500i also has a pressure and internal temperature sensor in its engine. This measures the environmental pressure on start-up, and during operation it checks the engine temperature and pressure in the crankcase. The electrical voltage generator delivers the required speed information. The control unit processes these values, meaning that the system adapts to the conditions of use. The fuel is then dosed at the optimum level, quickly resulting in perfect running characteristics. Very easy to start - The starting process is perfect, with no need for a start position, and easy access to the purger. STIHL 2-MIX-Engine - 1-in-4 channel technology. The economical STIHL 2-MIX engine with 1-in-4channel technology features a high torque over a wide speed range. The chainsaw provides fuel savings of up to 20% compared to STIHL two-stroke engines in the same performance class without 2-MIX technology. Exhaust emissions are reduced by up to 50%. Anti-vibration system - Intense vibration at the handles of power tools can lead to long-term effects on blood vessels in the hands and arms. STIHL has therefore developed an effective anti-vibration system whereby the oscillations from the machine's engine are dampened which significantly reduces vibrations at the handles. HD2 filter with radial seal - The new HD2 air filter, made from PET material and featuring a radial seal, prevents the intake of fine dust particles. The hermetic seal increases the service life of the engine and reduces wear. Captive nuts - When changing the cutting attachment, you will not risk losing the nuts on the sprocket. The MS 261 is the first STIHL chainsaw to be equipped with the captive nuts. A great advantage for all users. Plunge guide - Marking has been added to the fan housing to assist with plunge cuts. This ensures better directional control and safe use of the machine during plunge cutting. Optimised bumper spikes - The tooth length of the bumper spikes has been adjusted to account for the radial contours of trees. The saw bites into wood even better when cutting lengths and felling. Side chain tensioner - The tensioning screw can be found on the side of the chain saw through the sprocket cover. This removes the need for contact with the sharp saw chain. STIHL ElastoStart - STIHL ElastoStart reduces the shock caused by the compression of the engine during starting. The compression shock is taken away from the user's joints and muscles through a spring or rubber element in the starter handle. Tool free filler caps - Special catches on the fuel and oil tanks for easy opening and locking without the need for tools. Optimised sprocket cover - The flatter, narrower sprocket cover with integrated slide rails reduces effort when pruning and ensures outstanding chip removal. STIHL Ematic with new oil pump system - The new oil pump system allows a higher volume of oil to be delivered. This is especially useful in dusty conditions or when using a long guide bar. Technical Specification: Displacement: 79.2 cm³ Power output: 5/6.8 kW/bhp Weight: 6.2 kg System weight: 7.47 / 7.78 kg Power-to-weight ratio: 1.2 kg/kW Sound pressure level: 106 dB(A) Sound power level: 119 dB(A) Vibration values left/right: 4.2/4 m/s² Oil pump: Adjustable Tank volume: 0.78 l Chain pitch: 3/8" Chain tensioning: Side chain tensioner Sprocket  number of teeth: 7 Filter: Cartridge filter HD2 Bumper spike: Steel spike Cylinder: 4 channel / chrome Oil tank volume: 325 cm³ Sprocket: Rim sprocket Anti vibration system: Full AV-System Filler cap: Tool-free tank cap Starting system: ElastoStart / manual fuel pump (purger) / non-return ignition / decompression valve / stop button EPA Certified fuel consumption: 2.707 l/h CO2: 707 g/kWh

The NHS is a precious thing. Try being ill in the US if you don’t believe this | Mary O’Hara

If we allow US ‘big pharma’ to get its hands on the NHS, drug costs will rocket and millions will be priced out of healthcare

The NHS is likely to take centre stage in next month’s election. Debate to date has focused on what the health service might look like in a post-Brexit world if America’s for-profit buccaneer “big pharma” gain a significant foothold following a US-UK trade deal. Jeremy Corbyn was spot on when he launched a salvo during PMQs charging that the NHS was in “greater danger” than at any time since its inception, whatever mealy-mouthed pledges Boris Johnson makes. The financial vultures have been circling for some time. And, as Channel 4’s Dispatches programme revealed, secret trade discussions have been under way with a view to ramping up the cost of drugs sold by US corporations to the NHS, which could cost the health service a whopping £27bn.

If you are in the UK and not deeply concerned about the prospect of the NHS coming to mirror the US healthcare system after Brexit, think again. Take it from someone who has what would be regarded as “good” health insurance cover by US standards: don’t go there. Studies have shown that US healthcare costs have been spiralling for years and that as a percentage of GDP, are as much as double those of other wealthy nations. Yet, on a number of crucial health outcome measures, including maternal and infant mortality, the country performs much worse than other rich countries. In the US, millions of people have gone bankrupt because they can’t afford to pay medical bills, while the price of drugs, such as insulin, have gone through the roof. Many people ration medicines, or have to choose between paying for them or the rent.

You Sunk My Battleship

Cache

Preface

People who make military policy and amateurs who follow it alike are in something of a vacuum when it comes to naval warfare.  While the Navy is a very large share of the United States Defense Department budget, there have been so few skirmishes in the past fifty years or so that it is hard to get a reality check on the multi-billion dollar expenditures involved. The few incidents which have occurred, meanwhile, have taken on disproportionate importance.

While some naval history is too distant to be of much use, from the ramming battles between glorified rowboats of the Greeks, to the days of sails and cannons, it is fair, at least, to look at the experience of World War II, the last full fledged blue sea naval campaign in world history.  This experience has informed much of the current conventional wisdom regarding naval warfare, and while the lessons learned in World War II need to be updated to reflect technological advances that have taken place since then, they are too recent to safely ignore.

Among other things, World War II taught the lesson that the heavy armor of a battleship was no match for modern offensive weapons.

As the Wikipedia article linked above explains:
Battleships were the largest and most complex, and hence the most expensive warships of their time; as a result, the value of investment in battleships has always been contested.
As the French politician Etienne Lamy wrote in 1879, "The construction of battleships is so costly, their effectiveness so uncertain and of such short duration, that the enterprise of creating an armored fleet seems to leave fruitless the perseverance of a people". The Jeune École school of thought of the 1870s and 1880s sought alternatives to the crippling expense and debatable utility of a conventional battlefleet. It proposed what would nowadays be termed a sea denial strategy, based on fast, long-ranged cruisers for commerce raiding and torpedo boat flotillas to attack enemy ships attempting to blockade French ports.
The ideas of the Jeune École were ahead of their time; it was not until the 20th century that efficient mines, torpedoes, submarines, and aircraft were available that allowed similar ideas to be effectively implemented. The determination of powers such as Germany to build battlefleets with which to confront much stronger rivals has been criticised by historians, who emphasise the futility of investment in a battlefleet that has no chance of matching its opponent in an actual battle.
Large Warships In Existing Navies

Today, there are only two ships of the battleship class in the world, both in the Russian Navy, only one of which is in active service, the 28,000 ton Admiral Nakhimov commissioned in 1988 is currently undergoing refit and is out of service, and the 28,000 ton Pyotr Velikiy, of the same class commissioned in 1998 is in active service.

The 14,564 ton Zumwalt class destroyer of the U.S. Navy, the largest warship in the U.S. Navy that is not an aircraft carrier or non-combatant logistics ship, and is is arguably misclassified as a destroyer deserves a battleship designation. Just three Zumwalt class destroyers have three have been built (and no more have been ordered). One was commissioned in 2016, one was commissioned in 2019, and one is awaiting a commission later this year. It cost $7.5 billion per ship of total cost to build and has been severely criticized:
Mike Fredenburg analyzed the program for National Review after Zumwalt broke down in the Panama Canal in November 2016, and he concluded that the ship's problems "are emblematic of a defense procurement system that is rapidly losing its ability to meet our national security needs." Fredenburg went on to detail problems relating to the skyrocketing costs, lack of accountability, unrealistic goals, a flawed concept of operations, the perils of designing a warship around stealth, and the failure of the Advanced Gun System. He concludes:

"The Zumwalt is an unmitigated disaster. Clearly it is not a good fit as a frontline warship. With its guns neutered, its role as a primary anti-submarine-warfare asset in question, its anti-air-warfare capabilities inferior to those of our current workhorse, the Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, and its stealth not nearly as advantageous as advertised, the Zumwalt seems to be a ship without a mission."
Indeed, only twenty navies in the world have surface warships (including aircraft carriers, but not transport ships) larger than a frigate: U.S. (111), Japan (48), China (33), Russia (20), India (14), France (14), United Kingdom (7), Norway (5), Italy (4), Taiwan (4), Netherlands (4), Denmark (3), Germany (3), South Korea (3), Egypt (3), Saudi Arabia (3), Spain (2), Brazil (1), Thailand (1), and Morocco (1).

Only seven of these countries (China, Russia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Thailand and Morocco) would plausibly be U.S. naval warfare adversaries in the foreseeable future (while many of the remaining thirteen countries would likely be allies of the U.S. in an future naval warfare in their region). These seven plausible adversaries have 62 large surface warships ships combined. Of these only China and Russia are really serious concerns militarily and they have 53 large surface warships combined.

The Russian fleet's large ships, moreover, are split between several global regions that are distant from each other in some case (Northern, Baltic, Black Sea and Pacific). The aircraft carrier, the battleship, one smaller cruiser, and six destroyers are in Russia's Northern fleet. One smaller cruiser and five destroyers are in Russia's Pacific fleet. One of its smaller cruisers and one of its destroyers are in Russia's Black Sea fleet. Three of its destroyers are in Russia's Baltic fleet.

Several other plausible U.S. naval warfare adversaries such as Iran and North Korea have submarines but no large surface combatants.

Currently, the U.S. has 20 aircraft carriers (11 "super carriers" of 100,000 tons or more, and 9 amphibious assault ships which can carry helicopters, Osprey aircraft, Harrier aircraft or F-35B aircraft of 40,000-45,000 tons), Italy has 2, Japan has 4, France has 4, Australia has 2, Egypt has 2, and Brazil, China, India, Russia, Spain, Thailand and the United Kingdom each have one. In all there are 42 aircraft carriers in active naval service in the world.

Five aircraft carriers (one each from the U.K., China, Russia, India and France in order of size) are between the size of a U.S. super carrier and the smallest U.S. amphibious assault ship ranging from 42,000 to 65,000 tons (and only four of these from the China, Russia, India and France, and the ten U.S. super carriers, allow for something other than a vertical landing). The other eighteen aircraft carriers range from 11,486 tons to 27,100 tons (eleven of which are restricted to vertical takeoff and landing aircraft such as helicopters and the MV-22 Osprey). All twenty-seven carriers under 42,000 tons and two larger aircraft (one from the U.S. at 45,000 tons and one from the U.K. at 65,000 tons) are restricted either to short takeoff vertical landing aircraft such as an F-35B or a Harrier, or to vertical takeoff and landing aircraft.

Eleven more carriers (including two that are only VTOL carriers) are undergoing sea trials or ordered: the U.S. 3, China 3, and South Korea, India, Italy and Turkey one each.

Currently, the U.S. has 22 cruisers (10,000 tons each) and Russia has 4 (one battleship with 28,000 tons and three cruisers with 12,500 tons) in active service. In all there are 27 cruisers in active naval service in the world. The U.S. cruisers are virtually indistinguishable from its destroyers and slightly inferior to them as they are older designs.

Currently, the U.S. has 69 destroyers (including 2 of the Zumwalt class), Japan has 44, China has 32, Russia has 15, India has 13, France has 10, the U.K. has 6, Norway has 5Taiwan has 4, the Netherlands has 4Germany has 3, Denmark has 3South Korea has 3Saudi Arabia has 3, Italy has 2, Egypt has 1, Morocco has 1, and Spain has 1. The largest destroyer in active service (other than the two Zumwalt class destroyers in active service) is 10,290 tons and many of which are considerably smaller. Some of the destroyer class ships are larger, more capable ships actually called frigates in an effort to make comparisons comparable. All ships classified as frigates for these purposes are under 5,000 tons, although a few particularly capable frigates between 4,000 and 5,000 tons are classified as destroyers. There are 219 destroyers in all of the world's navies combined.

In all there are 42 aircraft carriers over 11,000 tons and 7 other surface combatants over 11,000 tons in naval service in the world. Of those, 20 aircraft carriers and 2 other surface combatants are in the U.S. Navy and 1 aircraft carrier and 4 other surface combatants (one battleship and three cruisers) are in the Russian Navy. The other navies of the world have 21 aircraft carriers, only 10 of which are more than VTOL helicopter carriers. There are 244 other surface combatants bigger than frigates in the world in active naval service (of which 67 are in the U.S. Navy and 15 are in the Russian Navy).

The Japanese Naval Experience

The case that really brought this home for the Japanese was the sinking of the battleship Yamato.  This 71,000 ton ship with massive 18 inch guns was tough.  It  had previously survived a hit from a torpedo delivered by a U.S. submarine on Christmas Day in 1943, and two bombs that hit it in October of 1944, in the Leyte Gulf.  Two more 36,000 ton Japanese battleships, the Fuso and the Yamashiro, were sunk by naval gunfire and torpedoes in that same October battle.  Bombs damaged the 39,000 ton Japanese battleship Nagato in the battle of the Leyte Gulf badly enough to remove it from action. Ultimately, air power prevailed over the big guns and heavy armor of the pinnacle of the battleship era.  On April 7, 1945, the Yamato was sunk by carrier based U.S. aircraft and it took 2,498 Japanese sailors with it.  The 32,000 ton Japanese battleship Ise (already removed from service nine months earlier by a mine), and Japanese battleships Hyunga and Haruna were sunk by carrier based U.S. aircraft in July of 1945.

Japan had already lost its 32,000 ton battlecruiser Kirishima to 16” naval gunfire from the 47,000 ton American battleship Washington in 1942 in one of the last of the battles that went according traditional naval models of close range ship to ship combat, in this case, at a range of a mile and a half.  The 28,000 ton Japanese battleship Kongo was sunk by a submarine in November of 1944.  Its three sister ships were sunk by U.S. aircraft in World War II.

The American Naval Experience in World War II

Americans remember Pearl Harbor.  Yes, this carrier based air attack was a surprise.  But, a heavily armored hull did not prevent this attack from sinking the 32,000 ton U.S. battleship Arizona and three other battleships.  Four more battleships were seriously damaged, the 29,000 ton American battleship Nevada among them, although the Nevada was ultimately returned to service and survived further battle damage on multiple occasions.  Few naval strategists before Pearl Harbor had realized how vulnerable the fleet was to aerial attack.

The 33,000 ton American battleship Idaho ran aground off Okinawa in June of 1945.  American battleship Pennsylvania,  a sister ship of the Arizona, was taken out of action by enemy aircraft in August of 1945.

The 45,000 ton American battleship Indiana did exhibit the resilience in the face of damage which battleships are legendary for notwithstanding a mixed experience in real life.  It survived both a collision and a hit by a kamakazi pilot in 1944, and serious storm damage in 1945, yet survived until decommissioning in 1963.  The 45,000 ton South Dakota similarly sustained and survived repeated battle damage. The 56,000 ton American battleship Iowa likewise survived serious damage from shore fire sustained in March of 1944, and the 47,000 ton battleship Washington survived a 1942 torpedo hit from a Japanese submarine and a 1945 friendly fire incident.

The German Naval Experience in World War II

Germany’s 51,000 ton battleship the Bismark found its fate at the bottom of the sea in May of 1941.  The British Royal Air Force damaged the 40,000 ton German battleship Gneisenau to the point that it never again was useable as a battleship in 1942.  Sister German battleship Scharnhorst, however, survived in the face of a seemingly never ending barrage of hits sustained.

The Italian and Vichy French Naval Experiences in World War II

Both Italy and Vichy France both saw battleships destroyed in port before they were ever launched.

The planned 48,000 ton battleship Clemenceau was destroyed in its French port during a bombing raid in August 1944.  The 36,000 ton battleship Dunkerque, in the hands of the Vichy French, was damaged sufficiently to be taken out of action, and lost one in seven of its crew members, in July of 1940, by a combination of British warship attacks and torpedoes in two separate incidents.

The 30,000 ton Italian battleship Duilio wasn’t actually sunk, but a British bombing raid in November of 1940 took it out of service for about a year, and the ship served only a brief secondary role in World War II thereafter.  The 46,000 ton battleship Vittorio Veneto was taken out of action by British aircraft in 1941, then by a submarine, and then 1943 by another aircraft.  The 47,000 ton Italian battleship Littorio was taken out of commission by British aircraft by June of 1942.

The Spanish Naval Experience in World War II

The 16,000 ton battleship Espana was sunk by a “friendly” mine in July of 1937 during the Spanish civil war, killing a third of the sailors on board.

The British Naval Experience in World Wars I and II.

While it predates World War II, it is worth recalling that the 22,000 ton British battleship Dreadnought (the second of that name launched in 1906) which became synonymous with the very notion of a battleship, sank only one enemy vessel, a German submarine, in all of World War I.  It achieved this end not with its ten 12” guns, but with a methodology as old as Greek naval warfare.  It rammed it.

German dive bombing planes took the 30,000 ton British battleship Iron Duke out of service on October 17, 1939.  It Italian airplane’s torpedo took the 38,000 ton British battleship Nelson out of service for a year on September 27, 1941.  The British lost the 42,000 ton battleship Prince of Wales in December of 1941 to an attack by Japanese aircraft, after having suffered serious damage from naval guns, which was repaired, earlier that same year.  The 33,000 ton British battleship Queen Elizabeth was removed from service when an Italian frogman bombed it while it was in harbor that same month.

Value stocks are on a tear, but does the rally have staying power? – MarketWatch

The past ten years have not been kind to value investors. By some measures, value stocks — or those that are trading cheaply relative to a fundamental estimate of a company’s worth, like its book value — are more hated today than at any point in history. A combination of historically low interest rates, sluggish […]

Comment on Let’s Talk About The Nether Regions by Ben Saunders

Cache

Honestly to me it all worked absolutely fine, the most bizarre aspect would have to be Nose World, but that just comes off as wacky "lmao a dude who's entire job is making noses" stuff, it isn't confusing. I knew the photo manipulation stuff was a reference to something, but I thought it originated in bad detective shows like CSI etc. I thought Cat making little squids was really clever - it was a genuine mystery to me why he kept doing it, and I initially thought they looked like little rocket ships. If that's a Blade Runner thing it makes it a little less clever in retrospect. I did remember thinking Kochanski looked pretty odd, but I thought the very heavy makeup and daft wig was just because she was old and they were trying to cover for that, or possibly it was an attempt to make it all seem the more dreamlike. Everything in Back to Earth works on a narrative/comedic level if you've never seen Blade Runner, it just makes it slightly more surreal.
