Song-Poems Concert Series Returns to Literature Deparment This Fall

Cache

The 'Song-Poems' concert series, which debuted in the Spring of 2019, is finishing up this calendar year with three special events. The concert series invites Philadelphia-based musicians to come into the library and utilize the Literature Department's vast collections of poetry to inspire them to create new works—either by adapting already written poetry or by coming up with altogether new material inspired by something from the collection.

Our spring lineup consisted of a variety of musical styles: bedroom-pop, noise music, punk, folk, and electronic music. Patrons were invited to experience Pepper Hall (the Art/Lit Department) in a way they hadn't before, with sound filling the vast room.

The fall lineup continues that tradition. Three vastly different artists, from different musical backgrounds, will grace the Literature Department with unique perspectives and poetic voices. Here is a brief look at the upcoming lineup, starting November 7 at 6:00 p.m.

Karl Blau | Thursday, November 7
Karl Blau is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, and DIY icon who helped turn his hometown of Anacortes, Washington, into an indie-music mecca. He is now currently based in Philadelphia.

He has released more than 40 records in 20-odd years, many self-released in handmade packaging and mailed to subscribers, and others on iconic indie Northwest labels K Records and KNW-YR-OWN. Blau has also toured and recorded for years with Laura Veirs, the Microphones, Little Wings, D+, and Earth.

Anika Pyle | Wednesday, November 13
Anika Pyle is a Philly-based singer-songwriter, formerly of Brooklyn pop-punk band Chumped and currently in the Philadelphia punk rock group Katie Ellen.

A prolific songwriter and poet, they have been releasing music at breakneck speed in the past five years. Their music is confessional, emotional, and empowering.

Toyz | Thursday, December 5
Toyz is the electronic solo project of neo-soul & dark-psychedelia musician and visual artist Justin Courtney Roberts.

After fronting groundbreaking electronic-psych band Fake Babies in New Haven, CT, Roberts has been based in Philadelphia since 2015, where he has been producing collage art, paintings, and sound collages under the moniker Toyz.

He performs a special one-off performance of new material for 'Song-Poems'.

A follow-up blog post will feature images and links to media from the 'Song-Poems' series as a whole, containing material from each concert in 2019.

All Song-Poems concerts take place in the Literature Department at Parkway Central Library, starting at 6:00 p.m., and are free to the public.

#OneBookWednesday: Are You Reading With Us?

Cache

So, have you started reading There There yet?

Back on October 17, the Free Library was pleased to announce, in partnership with the Office of the Mayor, that Tommy Orange's award-winning debut novel would be the 2020 One Book, One Philadelphia featured selection for the program's 18th season.

The selection committee found this novel to be compellingly specific, providing nuanced accounts of the places and people it describes. The themes of the novel, including Indigenous erasure, self-representation, and healing, provide the opportunity to reflect on these issues as they relate to the present and future Lenape and pan-Indigenous experiences represented in Philadelphia.

So, what are you waiting for? Check out your ebook, audiobook, or paperback copy from the Free Library today! And as you begin reading, stay tuned right here to the One Book blog for discussion guides and conversation! We'll be back each week as part of the #OneBookWednesday series—hopefully we'll all learn something along the way!

For today, we leave you with this video to reacquaint you with One Book, One Philadelphia and get you thinking about There, There.

We also put together this handy character map, to help you keep track of everyone you'll be meeting.

What comes next? Join us at the Parkway Central Library on January 22 to kick off eight weeks of programming related to the book. With an original performance by Curtis Institute of Music composer Elise Arancio, this event will feature a discussion with Tommy Orange and 6ABC’s Tamala Edwards followed by a book signing. Between this kickoff event and the finale on March 18, more than 100 events including book discussions, mixed-media art, and music workshops, film screenings, poetry readings, community panels, and creative writing workshops all based on the themes of There There will take place around the city. We can't wait to experience it all with you!

Check back every #OneBookWednesday during the season for more One Book food-for-thought and reflection!

“Shocked. Shocked!” (meme)

Cache

"Shocked. Shocked!“ is a popular meme for when something is not shocking. The popular film Casablanca (1942) featured actor Claude Rains as Captain Louis Renault, who was forced by the Nazis to close down Rick’s cafe (where he had been gambling). Rick asked him why it was being shut down: Renault: Everybody is to leave here immediately! This cafe is closed until further notice. Clear the room, at once! Rick: How can you close me up? On what grounds? Renault: I am shocked- shocked- to find that gambling is going on in here! Croupier: [hands Renault money] Your winnings, sir. Renault: [to croupier] Oh, thank you very much. [announcing to the room] Everybody out at once! The “shocked, shocked” expression began to be used in popular culture in the 1970s and 1980s. It was printed in the Boston (MA) Evening Globe in 1971 and the New York (NY) Times in 1974. “Shocked, shocked” has been used in politics, such as after finding that a politician is corrupt. Wikiquote: Casablanca (film) Casablanca is a 1942 film about an American expatriate owner of an upscale club and gambling den in the Moroccan city of Casablanca who meets a former lover, with unforeseen complications. Directed by Michael Curtiz.  Written by Julius J. Epstein, Philip G. Epstein, and Howard Koch, based on the play Everybody Comes to Rick’s by Murray Burnett and Joan Alison. (...) Strasser: [after Laszlo leads the band in playing the French national anthem] You see what I mean? If Laszlo’s presence in a cafe can inspire this unfortunate demonstration, what more will his presence in Casablanca bring on? I advise that this place be shut up at once. Renault: But everybody’s having such a good time. Strasser: Yes, much too good a time. The place is to be closed. Renault: But I’ve no excuse to close it! Strasser: Find one. [Strasser leaves, ending the conversation; Renault walks into the middle of the room and blows his whistle] Renault: Everybody is to leave here immediately! This cafe is closed until further notice. Renault, it will be remembered, is the slick French prefect in “Casablanca” who, on the command of his German overseers, orders Rick’s speakeasy closed because he is “shocked, shocked to find there is gambling going on here.” At that moment, a croupier sidles up to him and hands him his winnings. Newspapers.com 23 October 1985, The Record (Hackensack, NJ), “What did we expect?” (editorial), pg. Newspapers.com 20 January 1987, Statesman-Journal (Salem, OR), “Life resembles vintage films” by Ron Blankenbaker, pg. 7A, col. 1: It was like a scene out of the 1940s classic, Casablanca, the one in which the Vichy police inspector, played by Claude Raines, walks into Humphrey Bogart’s casino and, as he collects his winnings, says: “I’m shocked. Shocked to find there’s gambling going on here.” Newspapers.com 11 January 1988, The Record (Hackensack, NJ), “You talk poor and hide your money” by Peter Yerkes, pg. B-11, col. 2-3: You remember the scene. Claude Rains, the French police inspector who likes to wager a few francs at Rick’s cafe, is ordered by the Germans to close the place down. he’s got no choice, so he stages a magnificent display of outrage. “Rick, I’m shocked. DRBC Staff Present at the 7th Annual CDRW Forum

Cache

The Coalition for the Delaware River Watershed (CDRW) held its 7th Annual Delaware River Watershed Forum last month in Allentown, Pa. Several DRBC staff provided presentations at the forum, which included a mix of panel discussions, site visits, and networking opportunities that educated attendees about the current health of the watershed and effective approaches being used to protect and restore its resources.

DRBC Manager of Water Resource Operations Amy Shallcross, P.E., presented on the History of the Salt Front (pdf 2 MB) during a session focused on salinity management in the Delaware Estuary, reservoir operations to control freshwater flows, and implications of sea level rise. One of DRBC's flow management responsibilities is controlling the upstream migration of salty water from the Delaware Bay during low-flow conditions to protect drinking water intakes in Philadelphia and Camden, as well as protect industrial intakes from corrosion and aquatic life that live in this unique, freshwater estuary.

DRBC Manager of Water Quality Assessment John Yagecic, P.E., presented on Recreational Uses and Criteria in the Delaware River (pdf 3 MB) during a session focused on how stakeholders use monitoring to protect the basin's waterways. The Delaware River Basin Compact directs the commission to take the lead on water quality matters that pertain to the basin through the adoption of regulations and the setting of designated uses and criteria; robust monitoring programs ensure that water quality criteria are being met. In addition to presenting, Mr. Yagecic led a discussion table about Delaware River fishable, swimmable stream designations and how collaboration on this effort can benefit all communities.

DRBC Director of External Affairs and Communications Peter Eschbach also led a discussion table on the commission-managed Our Shared Waters campaign. Our Shared Waters: A Look at the Delaware River Basin is an effort to engage basin stakeholders and residents about the importance of the Delaware River to the region and to encourage stewardship of our shared water resources, be it volunteering for a community cleanup or reaching out to local legislators to ensure they are investing in the basin. This new campaign is supported by a large variety of partners and includes multiple online and on-the-ground components.

The CDRW brings together non-profit organizations from across the watershed to unite around the common goals of protecting and restoring the Delaware River Basin. Their annual forum is an opportunity for non-profits, businesses, academia, and government organizations working all across the watershed to get together and learn from one another. For DRBC, it's a great way to share information about our programs and current efforts to manage, protect, and improve the basin's water resources.

Personalized crystal & flower potion made for you in this flowery, antique Avon bottle! The bottle is clear and sort of oval shaped. It was so pretty when I found, that I have left it as is, though, once your potion is complete, will add a little ribbon frill for some sparkle. :)

When you purchase this bottle, I will **hand blend a custom** crystal potion for you, made with your selection of ingredients. The opening on this bottle is very small, thus, potions will have to be made, steeped and then strained. There is no room in the mouth of the bottle to insert plants or crystals directly, and it would impede pouring back out if anything were put in the bottle other than the liquid potion.

The potion is naturally collected rain & stream water, moon charged. I will activate this potion with the authentic crystal of your choosing! (See choices below)

The variety of flower petals has been hand picked and dehydrated over time from various places when I see them. Aromatherapy fragrances are from essential oils.

Potions are perfect for diffusers, consecrating or blessing sacred spaces, circles of protection, invoking you intent, or your own unique use.

PLEASE FILL OUT THIS FORM & PUT IT IN THE BUYER COMMENTS AT PURCHASE!

Forget Kentucky and Virginia, the worst election news for Republicans came out of suburban Pennsylvania

Cache

FILE PHOTO: U.S. President Donald Trump delivers remarks at a Keep America Great Rally at the Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky, U.S., November 4, 2019. REUTERS/Yuri Gripas/File Photo

  • Republican losses on Tuesday in Kentucky and Virginia are making headlines, but President Donald Trump should be more worried about the election results in the suburbs of Pennsylvania.
  • Pennsylvania is a key swing state that went for Trump in 2016 and will be a central battleground state in 2020.
  • Democrats flipped suburban Delaware County, which has been controlled by Republicans since the Civil War, among other key wins in the previously Republican-dominated suburbs.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

There's been much discussion of the Republican Party's high-profile losses on Tuesday in Kentucky and Virginia, but historic GOP losses in Pennsylvania might be more concerning for the party in 2020.

The Democrat Andy Beshear, Kentucky's attorney general, beat the incumbent GOP Gov. Matt Bevin, and Virginia Democrats took control of both legislative chambers in the state.

Beshear's victory had much to do with Bevin's status as one of the most unpopular governors in the country (Republicans swept other Kentucky statewide races), and Virginia's blue wave was a long time coming. Neither state will be a battleground in 2020.

But in Pennsylvania, Republicans suffered more surprising — and potentially consequential — losses.

Democrats flipped suburban Delaware County, which has been controlled by Republicans since the Civil War. The county's five-member council, which was filled entirely by Republicans a few years ago, will now be occupied entirely by Democrats.

In Chester County, Democrats took control of the Board of Commissioners and pushed out the Republican district attorney for the first time. Democrats also took the majority of the Bucks County Board of Commissioners.

And in Philadelphia, a third-party candidate from the Working Families Party, Kendra Brooks, won a seat on the City Council reserved for the minority party. It had been held by a Republican for the past 70 years.

"We broke the GOP," Brooks said at an election-night party, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. "We beat the Democratic establishment ... They said a black single mom from North Philly wasn't the right person, but we have shown them that we are bigger than them."

Pennsylvania is a key swing state that went for President Donald Trump in 2016 and will be a central battleground state in 2020. Trump won the state by less than 1 percentage point — or about 44,000 votes of the more than 6 million cast — handing him Pennsylvania's 20 electoral votes.

Recent polling from The New York Times and Siena College found registered voters in Pennsylvania favoring former Vice President Joe Biden over Trump by 3 points, Sen. Bernie Sanders over Trump by 1 point, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren about even with the president. All the results, however, were within the poll's margin of error.

Democrats fear that Trump could again lose the popular vote by a significant margin but prevail in the Electoral College if an assortment of purple states swing in his favor in 2020.

The suburban vote is also a point of serious concern for the Republican Party. Democrats are looking to zero in on these voters, many of whom are women, moderates, and more affluent college-educated voters who went for Trump in 2016.

"Republican support in the suburbs has basically collapsed under Trump," Alex Conant, a Republican strategist, told The Associated Press on Wednesday. "Somehow, we need to find a way to regain our suburban support over the next year."

The trend in Virginia, where Democrats have surged in the northern part of the state and in the Richmond suburbs, also bodes poorly for Republicans, even in right-leaning suburbs.

The Rose Art Museum Announces 2019-2020 Ruth Ann And Nathan Perlmutter Artist-in-Residence Caroline Woolard

Cache

The Rose Art Museum has selected Caroline Woolard (American, b. 1984) as this year's 2019-2020 Ruth Ann and Nathan Perlmutter Artist-in-Residence. The Perlmutter Award recognizes extraordinary young talent and is part of the Rose's longstanding tradition of promoting the work of emerging artists. The year-long residency at the museum is also an opportunity to provide Brandeis University students and faculty with direct access to powerful contemporary art and ideas. In addition, Woolard is the Rose Art Museum's inaugural INDEX artist. In her work at the Rose, Woolard takes the meeting as a site for artistic and social intervention by combining the formal language of her sculptural practice with tools and techniques used for group facilitation.

"I believe it is crucial to examine and mine processes of human communication, conflict mediation, and resolution. Sharing, discussing, and reconciling multiple points of view has always been a vital part of radical creative and social processes and is something that Caroline Woolard explores with openness and intent in her work," says Luis A. Croquer, Henry and Lois Foster Director and Chief Curator. "I am thrilled to share Caroline's timely work with the Brandeis community. We remain forever indebted to Ruth Ann Perlmutter for the legacy she and her husband established that allows us to bring important working artists to the museum, and for their belief in art as an essential tool to expand minds."

INDEX, a new initiative at the museum, acts as an interdisciplinary and evolving inquiry, linking the museum's role as an exhibition space with a diversity of academic, educational, and public programs. Site-responsive, artist-driven projects guide INDEX's path, acting both as event and exhibition to create a dynamic and constantly changing program. Like a book's index, the project is comprised of individual entries-presentations that rotate on a bi-annual basis-yet serves also to reorganize, cross-reference, and establish new relationships to content.

Woolard's The Meeting Game (2019- ), installed for the duration of her residency, rewrites the conventional meeting format to investigate new systems for collaboration and cooperation. Woolard's proposition designates the Lee Gallery as a space for generative dialogue and invites participants to explore more open, aware, and intentional exchanges by using and collectively contributing to The Meeting Game's evolving platform.

The Ruth Ann and Nathan Perlmutter Artist-in-Residence Award is part of the Rose's longstanding tradition of promoting young artists. Past honorees have included Tuesday Smillie, Tony Lewis, Jennie C. Jones, Mika Rottenberg, Dana Schutz, Xavier Veilhan, and Barry McGee.

Nathan Perlmutter served as national director of the Anti-Defamation League for eight years and was a vice president at Brandeis from 1969-73. Along with his wife, Ruth Ann, he championed the interfaith movement and sought to empower Jews, blacks and other minorities. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House in 1987, shortly before his death. Ruth Ann Perlmutter, a sculptor and painter, received degrees from the University of Denver and Wayne State University.

Caroline Woolard employs speculative objects, immersive installation, and online networks to imagine and enact systems of mutual aid and collaboration, exploring what she terms "the pleasures and pains of interdependence." Her work has been commissioned by the Museum of Modern Art; the Whitney Museum of American Art; and the Brooklyn Museum, New York. It has been exhibited in solo presentations at Cornell University Gallery, Ithaca; Dekalb Gallery, Pratt Institute, New York; and Moore College of Art and Design, Philadelphia, among others. She is the recipient of awards, fellowships, and residencies from numerous organizations, including the Pilchuck Glass School (2018), the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (2017), the Queens Museum (2014), Eyebeam (2013), the Rockefeller Cultural Innovation Fund (2013 and 2011), The Watermill Center (2011), and the MacDowell Colony (2009). Woolard is an Assistant Professor of Sculpture at the University of Hartford, Connecticut and a mentor at the School of Visual Arts, New York. Making and Being, her forthcoming book about interdisciplinary collaboration, coauthored with Susan Jahoda, will be published later this fall.

Method of Delphi as an Innovative Tool for Managing Asymmetric Information in Financial Relationships of Potential Investors and Small Business Entities.

Cache

Название: Method of Delphi as an Innovative Tool for Managing Asymmetric Information in Financial Relationships of Potential Investors and Small Business Entities. Авторы: Pedchenko, Nataliya; Strilets, Victoria; Rudenko, Nina Аннотация: The problem of information asymmetry is a key obstacle in attracting external investment into small businesses. Especially important is management of asymmetricity of the information of the primary awareness about the investment climate of the small business at the stage of the search by the investor of a perspective project for funding. Among other sources of information, international rankings are important tools for minimizing asymmetric information, but their realism and reliability need to be checked. It is identified in the work that some ratings characterize Ukraine as a high-risk and non-contributing country for investing, at the same time, the other ratings create an attractive image of Ukraine. For determining the submissions of such ratings the article proposes an experiment on the STUDY of the conformity of indicators of international rankings to the real state and availability of financial support of small business. The results of the experiment highlight the importance of international rankings as a source for information about the investment attractiveness of small business, but conducted by the method of Delphi survey of experts with many years of experience in the field of small business, allows us to identify significant discrepancy between their scoring of respondents and indicators of ranks, stated in the reports of international organizations. Application of the coefficient of concordance in determining the consistency of opinion of the surveyed experts allowed to obtain reliable data for the making future government decisions. Based on the obtained results and the visualization of the existing information asymmetry in the financial interaction of a potential investor and a small business, the directions of asymmetric information management and proposed measures to minimize the risks associated with the limited and inaccurate information are substantiated.
