Hospitality Technology-focused Organizations HFTP and HTNG Partner for HITEC Europe

Cache

European hospitality technology show is April 21-23, 2020 in Palma, Mallorca Spain

CHICAGO (September 5, 2019) – Two leading associations, who work to advance and educate on hospitality technology, are partnering to produce the fourth annual HITEC® Europe on April 21-23 in Palma, Mallorca Spain.

Joining resources, Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals (HFTP®) and Hospitality Technology Next Generation (HTNG) are collaborating to develop a program with outstanding content and presentations by field experts from across the globe. HFTP has produced the Hospitality Industry Technology Exposition and Conference (HITEC) since 1972, and in 2017 expanded the brand with two additional boutique events in Europe and Dubai which bring together thought leaders, practitioners and vendors to cover hospitality technology trends and practices. Since then, the European show has been building annually and a new partnership with HTNG will help to elevate the program and broaden its audience.

“The goal for HFTP is to provide an indispensable annual gathering for the industry in Europe and beyond to go over the myriad ins-and-outs of technology as it relates to hospitality,” said HFTP CEO Frank Wolfe, CAE. “Partnering with HTNG and its high-level, professional network makes HITEC Europe an essential event, as there will be no other hospitality technology-focused conference in Europe that brings together this level of expertise.”

As a result of this collaboration, HTNG will merge its annual European conference with HITEC Europe. The organization will now direct its resources to help build it into a powerhouse event with HFTP. HTNG will still hold their Hospitality Tech Summit in Europe, which is a one-day track in conjunction with the Integrated Systems Europe show on 13 February 2020 in Amsterdam.

“After many years of collaboration with HFTP, it’s great to come together and formalize a partnership on HITEC Europe,” said HTNG CEO Michael Blake, CAE. “We understand there are too many shows out there and are actively working toward the goal of having fewer, better shows.”

HITEC Europe full registration attendees have access to two full days of education, two full days of exhibits and access to the Entrepreneur 20X (E20X) pre-conference event and Welcome Reception. Details are available on the HITEC Europe website.

Adding to the reasons this will be a must-attend event is the co-location of the HSMAI Europe ROC and DOC events. These two conferences cover the latest trends and news in Revenue Optimization, Digital Marketing and Distribution for the travel, hospitality and event industries. These have run alongside HITEC Europe since its first year in 2017 and will continue to have a presence in 2020.

Following HITEC Europe, HFTP will host the larger HITEC San Antonio on June 15-17, 2020 in San Antonio, Texas USA. For more information about HITEC and HFTP's other international activities, contact the HFTP Meetings & Special Events Department at education@hftp.org or visit www.hftp.org and www.hftp.org/hitec.

'Extreme' Keynote Speaker to Present at HTNG European Conference

Cache

CHICAGO (August 26, 2019) - The Keynote Session, 'Ride the Next Wave of Technology or Get Wiped Out,' will be presented by Hélio Vogas during 18-20 November at the upcoming HTNG European Conference in Monte Carlo.

From someone who had a phobia of heights to becoming addicted to skydiving, Hélio has learned a valuable lesson when it comes down to taking risks: You don't need to be a courageous person to take big risks and enjoy the rewards.

When you hear Hélio talking about his surfing or skydiving experience and see him doing stunts on stage with fire, arrows and swords, you might think Hélio doesn't care about safety at all and likes living dangerously. The truth is that he is one of the most scared people you will ever meet...to the point of always parking the car on the street toward the nearest hospital to save precious seconds 'just in case.'

Bringing it to the corporate world, he shows audiences how taking bold risks are the safest option to take if you want your organization to survive in this day and age.

Hélio has spoken from local business breakfast groups to TEDx and the United Nations headquarters in Vienna, Austria. His audiences have ranged from student assemblies to C-level executives of Fortune 500 companies. Fire, swords and some adrenaline are just a few things to expect during his speech at the HTNG European Conference.

Conference registration is open to any full-time employee of a company who owns, manages or franchises a hotel. For all other industry participants, HTNG membership is required. Technology providers, consultants and others who are not HTNG members should check with HTNG's Membership Department to ensure eligibility.

NFC Contactless Payments White Paper Released

Cache

CHICAGO (June 28, 2019) - Hospitality Technology Next Generation's (HTNG's) NFC Contactless Payments Workgroup publishes a white paper to provide an overview of EMV contactless payment technology for the hospitality industry.

NFC contactless payments include, but are not limited to, Apple Pay, Google Wallet and Samsung Pay. Among hospitality brands, there has been an uneven acceptance of these contactless payment methods, which causes an inconsistent payment experience throughout the industry. This conflict often results in a negative customer experience and the uncertainty for brands to continue to use this type of payment in the future.

The NFC Contactless Payments White Paper will help hospitality brands better understand the contactless payments-enabled solutions currently available and help drive other solutions to accept contactless payments. The document takes readers through benefits of contactless payments, how these payments work, how to get started and additional resources.

The NFC Contactless Payments Workgroup was led by Ryan Ahern, payments solutions manager of Ingenico and Michael Chall, senior director, global technology partnerships of Visa.

HTNG to Start Workgroups on Topics of 5G, AV and Wireless Power

Cache

CHICAGO (June 25, 2019) – Hospitality Technology Next Generation (HTNG) identifies three new emerging hospitality technology topics and launches a 5G for Hospitality Workgroup, a Converging AV and IT Workgroup and a Wireless Power Workgroup.

HTNG’s 5G for Hospitality Workgroup will produce white papers to educate the hospitality community on the characteristics and capabilities of 5G, articulate the implications for existing network infrastructure and 5G’s potential for the hospitality ecosystem. These white papers will identify and prioritize 5G’s impact on the guest experience, identify operational needs and explain potential business models, business relationships, scenarios, use cases and upgrade paths.

Interim chairs for the 5G for Hospitality Workgroup are Alp Basol of AT&T, Dayna Kully of 5thGenWireless, Kurt Jacobs of JMA Wireless and Fernando Perez of JMA Wireless. This group will kick-off on Thursday, June 27 at 10:00 a.m. CST.

AV equipment is still early in its deployment of Internet Protocol (IP) as a standard, leading to potential inconsistencies in implementation. HTNG’s Converging AV and IT Workgroup seeks to improve the event/guest experience, improve space ROI, better accommodate fixed and portable AV technology for meetings, converge AV equipment onto the IP network and improve the overall aesthetic look.

Interim chairs for the Converging AV and IT Workgroup are Matthew Harvey of PSAV and Jeff Loether of Electro-Media Design. This group’s kick-off call occurred on Monday, June 24.

HTNG’s Wireless Power Workgroup will create a buyer’s guide to provide the hospitality industry a high-level overview of important questions to ask when selecting, purchasing, installing and maintaining wireless power solutions for their properties. The goal of the buyer’s guide is to help hospitality brands and ownership groups choose the right equipment to improve the guest experience.

Interim chairs for the Wireless Power Workgroup are Ryan Sanderson of Aircharge and Jono van Deventer of Chargifi. This group kicked off the morning of Tuesday, June 25.

Buyer's Guide for Employee Safety Devices Introduced to the Hospitality Industry

Cache

CHICAGO (May 1, 2019) - Hospitality Technology Next Generation's (HTNG's) Staff Alert Technology Workgroup, in partnership with the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA), releases a Device Buyer's Guide to point hospitality companies in the right direction whether at the start or during the process of device adoption.

This publication is a 30-page Staff Alert Device Buyer's Guide which organizes a plethora of questions to consider for companies who may be contemplating solution providers to partner with for the deployment of on-property staff alert technology.

The HTNG workgroup was led by Chairs Parminder Batra, co-founder and CEO of TraknProtect and Nicole Fessler, director of risk management at White Lodging.

"Created with extensive feedback from hoteliers, property management group and suppliers, the HTNG Staff Alert Vendors Guide represents a highly effective resource for developing vendor RFI or RFPs and to realize the best solution to support their employee's security," said Batra.

"Our announcement of the 5-Start Promise was an unprecedented show of unity within the hospitality industry, prioritizing the safety and security of the more than eight million employees and millions of guests that our industry supports," said Chip Rogers, president and CEO of AHLA. "As we approach the one-year anniversary of that commitment, we are shifting our focus to the challenging, but critical process of implementation. This dedicated resource will aid many hoteliers working to reach that next phase."

There are potentially thousands of hotels who may need to select and deploy solutions to meet unique requirements and diverse environments. Workgroup members have developed this buyer's guide to assist hoteliers, from general or operations management to corporate brand executives, in building a Request for Information (RFI) or Request for Proposal (RFP) for their hotel property, portfolio or brand. The objective of this guide is to assist the procurement team with identifying the most relevant questions, and to allow the development of the tailored RFI or RFP for their property or brand.

Similar to HTNG's Staff Alert Technology Workgroup, AHLA leads a task force of industry participants to begin the process of outlining an implementation framework. This Staff Alert Device Buyer's Guide is released in conjunction with the AHLA Safety Summit, taking place today in Washington D.C.

The partnership with AHLA was a natural fit with the industry's commitment to the 5-Star Promise, a pledge to provide hotel employees across the U.S. with employee safety devices (ESDs) and commit to enhanced policies, trainings and resources that together are aimed at enhancing hotel safety, including preventing and responding to sexual harassment and assault. The organizations, HTNG and AHLA, are committed to continue working together to back the 5-Star Promise and deliver positive results to the hospitality industry.

New Strategy Chairs to Join HTNG's Global Strategy Team

CHICAGO (April 18, 2019) - HTNG announces two new Strategy Chairs to join its Global Strategy Team and lead the Staff Recruiting and Engagement Pillar, and the newly launched Distribution Pillar.

Hyatt Hotel Corporation’s Director of IT – Hotel Openings, Mark Retnam, and VP of HR ASPAC, Katie Carter, have been elected to serve as Strategy Chairs for HTNG’s Staff Recruiting and Engagement Pillar. The mission of this pillar is to improve technology and its use to increase staff engagement, to make staff members’ lives easier and to generate greater productivity while also making careers in hospitality operations and IT more attractive.

Retnam and Carter state, “We are truly honored to have been chosen as co-chairs for the HTNG Staff Recruiting and Engagement Strategic Pillar. People are at the heart of our industry and the thoughtful application of technology can have a very positive impact on colleague engagement, their quality of life in the workspace and their productivity. We are very excited to work with the HTNG community and the larger hospitality industry to bring this vision to life.”

HTNG has grown their partnerships with the OpenTravel Alliance and the Hotel Electronic Distribution Network Association (HEDNA) to now facilitate joint workgroups which support improved distribution strategies. The first two efforts include the recently launched Open Payments Alliance (OPA) and Unique Global Identifier (UGI) working groups.

These groups align to a new Strategic Pillar between HTNG and OpenTravel which focuses on distribution. Oracle Hospitality's Senior Director Distribution Strategy, Tom Coulthurst, has been elected to serve as the Strategy Chair for the Distribution Pillar.

Coulthurst shares his vision for the new pillar, “I find it very important for the industry to provide both hotel chains and other travel verticals a seamless way to represent their products and brand identity to easily activate and manage all distribution channels. I’m excited to be able to lead this effort by HTNG and OpenTravel.”

Four Organizations Unite to Launch Unique Global Identifier Workgroup

Cache

CHICAGO (April 1, 2019) – Associations Hospitality Technology Next Generation (HTNG), Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals (HFTP®), Hotel Electronic Distribution Network Association (HEDNA), and the OpenTravel Alliance charter a collaborative group to achieve consensus and generate implementation of Unique Global Identifiers (UGI).

When there’s an inability to track individual hotel property details and unit information, it leads to misinformation about hotel ownership, brand affiliation, management, location and other details.

The UGI project was created by the organizations listed above to identify and provide a single source of information within the hospitality industry. In technical terms, a UGI is a unique and persistent code for which any entity can register. UGIs can be used to identify relationships at any point in time, such as a hotel with its franchise, chain or member associations. Once registered, any other entity in the industry can query and use the UGI codes to exchange information and potentially the transactions in which they may be involved.

Facilitated by HTNG, the UGI Workgroup will define the value proposition of a UGI to the different constituencies, such as vendors, distributors and other stakeholders. This information will lead to an initial associated business model, a minimum viable product and a governance structure to encourage industry buy-in and participation in the overall system.

The kick-off teleconference for the UGI Workgroup will be held this Wednesday, April 3 at 9:00 CST via teleconference. The group will also hold a face-to-face meeting next week at HT-NEXT

HTNG Recharters the Internet of Things Workgroup

Cache

CHICAGO (March 12, 2019) - Hospitality Technology Next Generation (HTNG) recharters the Internet of Things (IoT) Workgroup to further advance the hospitality industry's knowledge on the extensive topic.

IoT is the network of physical devices, vehicles, buildings and other items - embedded with electronics, software, sensors and network connectivity that enables these objects to collect and exchange data.

IoT poses challenges for hospitality executives to determine which solutions offer tangible benefits, no unnecessary complexity, and are compatible with existing solutions and those that may become available on the market. The hospitality industry is currently uncertain about what steps to take to identify what is needed to implement a secure IoT environment.

This workgroup will address this industry challenge by publishing documents and guidelines for successful IoT network design, communication protocols, integration and security concerns including a reference architecture for common hospitality IoT use cases. These contributions will allow hoteliers to better select, implement and support the IoT solution which best meets the needs of the hotel, the brand and the guest.

HTNG's IoT Workgroup has previously published "How Hospitality Can Win With IoT" and the "Internet of Things Fundamentals."

The teleconference for the new IoT Workgroup charter will be held on Wednesday, March 20 at 10:00 a.m. CST. To join this group, click here, login and select "Join Group."

For more information, please contact workgroups@htng.org.

Open Payments Alliance Standards Workgroup Announced

Cache

CHICAGO (February 22, 2019) – Hospitality Technology Next Generation (HTNG), OpenTravel Alliance and Hotel Electronic Distribution Network Association (HEDNA) announced that they are partnering to form the Open Payments Alliance (OPA) Standards Workgroup for the hospitality and travel industry.

HEDNA’s payments forum created the OPA concept to bypass the legacy constraints that restrict innovation in the travel industry's B2B payment space. The OPA advocates decoupling the payment channel from the reservation channel in order to streamline B2B payments between TMCs, OTAs, wholesalers and other travel operators to hotels. The OPA framework is applicable any time a guest does not pay directly for a room and has been designed to support complex B2B payment flows, involving multiple forms of payment (virtual credit cards, ACH, SEPA, etc.), different billing requirements (direct bill and bill-back), FX and hedging operations and commission payments.

Most systems being used today were designed to primarily handle cash and credit card payments from guests. These systems have not been adapted to handle other forms of payment, which are being increasingly demanded by corporate travel managers.  Virtual credit cards, in particular, are growing in popularity, and not handled well with current system functionality.

OPA’s purpose is to bypass the current flow of reservations to process payments more efficiently and securely. By separating the payment path from the reservation path, significant changes will not be required by global distribution systems (GDS), central reservation systems (CRS), and property management systems (PMS). This will also Increase security by keeping credit card information in a separate, secure environment.

This workgroup will create software standards, business rules and best practices so that OPA solutions can be developed and integrated with other key systems using open standards.

Any individual who is employed by a member of at least one of the three associations can participate in the workgroup. Nonmembers can participate until the workgroup is chartered and approved to move forward.

Seena Zandipour Crowned HTNG’s First Hackathon Winner

Cache

CHICAGO (February 7, 2019) – Seena Zandipour won a first-place title and $3,000 prize for the internal dashboard he developed at HTNG’s hackathon.

HTNG’s first hackathon, Hack the Night, took place on January 25-27 at the Plug and Play Technology Center in Sunnyvale, CA. This event brought together over 50 hackers and fostered collaborative participation from 13 teams.

Hack the Night challenged participants to take guest data and create an innovative tool that leverages this information and ultimately benefits the company’s staff, guests, or both.

Zandipour created an internal dashboard for concierges and front of house staff which gathers data from local event organizers, and then creates augmented and personalized recommendations for guests based on the rich guest profile that was available through Oracle Hospitality's OPERA Cloud platform. In addition to the dashboard, the concierge can provide a physical copy of recommendations in a leaflet that customers can easily carry.

“I travel a lot and like to go to music festivals, but what makes me uncomfortable is that I never know what the scene is going to be like,” Zandipour says. “That’s definitely what I tapped into as inspiration for my idea."

Seetha Ramakrishna Madamsetti and Haoyand Li won second place at Hack the Night. Their solution alerts hotel staff to begin preparation for guests’ arrivals based on their proximity to the property. Third place winners, Luyanda Mdanda and Pasquale Ranieri, created a marketing segmentation tool which monitors purchases to create future spending recommendations.

Title Sponsor, Oracle Hospitality, and Diamond Sponsors, Hapi and Poynt, provided their APIs as well as mentors for participants to work with. Commenting on the success of solutions from the event, Mike Ferrier, Vice President of Oracle Hospitality states, “It was amazing to see the teams bring creative ideas to life over a weekend!  Using technology to anticipate guest needs and provide personalized, memorable, and sharable experiences are primary goals of the contemporary hotelier. Several of the participants’ ideas demonstrated how new technologies such as AI and data science could be used to predict and fulfill guest needs based on guest preferences, past stay data and guest buying behavior.”

Trini artist for Atlanta exhibition

Cache

THE WORK of Trinidadian artist Andrea McKenzie has been recognised with an award in Atlanta, Georgia, US, and will also be displayed this month in the Atlanta Mayor's Gallery.

McKenzie, who is based in Atlanta, recently won the 2019 I am Black, I am Power, Art and Creativity award from the Black People United Global Network with "Black" being an acronym for Beautiful Living Ancestors Controlling Kingdoms Irreplaceable Amazing Melanin.

The founder and CEO of Black People United Global Network, Dr Angela Harris, said the body, which was founded in December 2015, seeks to "strategically honour people of all nationalities and religions in the black race from all around the world.

"Our mission is to collectively come together under one roof to give recognition to well-deserving individuals who have gone above and beyond to help the relevancy of our image as a race to have a positive influence on our families, communities and business through their God-given gifts and talents."

McKenzie told Newsday via e-mail that she was nominated anonymously for the award.

"I felt honoured to be recognised amongst thousands of artists in the city of Atlanta, Georgia. I always work hard towards perfecting my craft and achieving my goals. Receiving this award brought great fulfilment and pride to be able to represent my country internationally in the arts."

McKenzie's work was also selected by the mayor of Atlanta, Keisha Lance Bottoms, to be exhibited at the Mayor's Gallery, City Hall, Atlanta, from November 14- January 4 in a dual exhibition called SANKOFA (go back and get it).

"I'm very excited to be given this amazing opportunity."

The exhibit will feature ten pieces from McKenzie of mixed media including glass, acrylic, resin, glitter and cowrie shells. She said her new, unique style is giving her the breakthrough, "as no one is doing it in Georgia."

[caption id="attachment_794568" align="alignnone" width="481"] The piece I Am by Andrea McKenzie. -[/caption]

Atlanta's Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs (OCA), in an online post, announced the exhibition by McKenzie and Ghana-born artist Alfred Addo. The joint exhibition commemorates the ideas embodied in Ghana’s Year of Return, a reflection on the 400th anniversary of the first enslaved Africans' arrival in Jamestown, Virginia.

Addo was born to a family of artists and has been exposed to art since infancy. OCA noted his primary inspiration came from his father, who exhibited his work regularly and challenged Addo to produce unique artwork.

"Although Addo was passionate about art, he also possessed a keen interest in the physical sciences, a field he found satisfyingly challenging. He was torn between going to college to study medicine and pursuing his passion to be a professional artist. In the end, he chose to follow his passion and pursue art full-time.

[caption id="attachment_794567" align="alignnone" width="452"] The piece is titled Unchained Love by Andrea McKenzie. -[/caption]

"Since then, Addo has specialised in sculpture as his core medium. Interestingly, his physical science background led him to experiment with different materials, including sawdust, which he played with as a child in the sawmill where his father bought and cut wood for his sculptures. Naturally, Addo grew up loving this medium and decided to make it the main material he uses in all his artwork. Passionate about the sustainability of the earth, Addo perfected the method of recycling sawdust and waste materials to create various types of sculptures and relief works."

Addo has successfully participated in many international art exhibitions in places including Johannesburg, Cape Town, New York, Chicago, Washington, DC, Miami, Santa Fe, New Mexico, Atlanta, San Diego, California, Martha’s Vineyard and in his home city Accra, Ghana.

OCA described McKenzie as "a true island girl" who comes from one of the most culturally diverse nations in the world, TT, and her natural aptitude for creativity was nurtured at an early age because of her family’s involvement in the nation’s world-famous Carnival.

"McKenzie’s fascination with contrast, textures, and fabrics was the fuel behind her kaleidoscope-like pieces. She uniquely infused glass, acrylic, and other materials on varying canvas, which propelled her into achieving a viable international clientèle."

OCA noted throughout her young career, she has exhibited works in multiple nations including TT and neighbouring Caribbean islands. Her art has also been exhibited in New York, Washington, DC, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Seattle, London and Australia.

[caption id="attachment_794569" align="alignnone" width="638"] Atlanta, Georgia-based Trinidadian artist Andrea McKenzie. -[/caption]

In 2013, after losing her job in event marketing, McKenzie pursued her passion for art and became a full-time artist, with clients in the US and Europe. As a full-time artist, she does commissioned pieces where people contact her via e-mail or on her website and let her know what they want, whether it is for their homes or businesses.

Her first exhibition, Pieces of Me, was held in Trinidad in 2013 and featured 25 pieces about her and life experiences, including first love and first disappointment.

McKenzie has clients from countries such as the US, Sweden, England, Scotland and TT. She works primarily with acrylic on canvas or wood board. Her dream is to have her pieces featured in the set decoration of successful television shows and box office movies and showcased all over the world.

To see more of McKenzie’s work visit her Instagram @andreas.heart and her art page on Facebook at Andrea’s Unique Art.
