Mississippi Democratic Party Needs to Overhaul Strategies, Outreach, Diversity

    Cache

Best-selling author Angie Thomas, a Jackson native, is leaving Mississippi because she cannot stand to live among the toxic politics that hurts so many people. Photo by Anissa Photography.

Prominent novelist Angie Thomas is planning to leave Mississippi due to the toxic politics here, which was on prominent display in last night’s election outcome. The wildly successful graduate of Belhaven College grew up in Georgetown in Jackson and travels frequently to Atlanta, Los Angeles and beyond. Her first novel became a popular feature film, and now her second adapted film is in production. She told me in a recent Let’s Talk Jackson podcast that she is turning her career attention toward the film world as well as writing books.

But, as of now, Angie doesn’t plan to make films in her native Mississippi, even as she is investing in her old neighborhood, fixing up playgrounds and working to inspire kids, much as her hero Nipsey Hussle did in L.A., as she explained in our podcast and a recent cover story by JFP Culture Writer Aliyah Veal.

“I once considered putting my production company in Mississippi, filming projects in Mississippi,” Angie tweeted last night. “But I also realize the money from those projects would benefit politicians who don't see me as an equal. Money talks, and mine walks.”

The Real Root of Mississippi ‘Brain Drain’

Many of the same politicians who won statewide offices last night by pandering to Donald Trump love to talk about stopping Mississippi brain drain, of course. There's even a "Mississippi Brain Drain Commission" with an ugly website. But it’s always about anything but reversing hatefulness and intolerance of anyone not just like those in power.

Angie wasn’t the only one tweeting about this last night: Smart Mississippians crowded into my mentions to say they don’t think they can stay in the state much longer, while the election outcome discouraged many ex-pats who want to return home.

I and my staff have worked mightily to convince young people to stay in the state and use their energy and resources for progress here since I returned 18 years ago and then started this paper. It’s extremely common for me to be out in public—the last time at the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum a couple weeks ago—and a young professional I don’t know walks up to me to tell me that they were uncertain about moving to Jackson for a job or whatever, but picked up the Jackson Free Press while visiting and realized that the state has people who don’t fit the hateful stereotype. This has happened hundreds of times since the Jackson Free Press launched in 2002.

It’s getting hard to ask Mississippians to stay or return now, though. Just the tweets last night showed that their pain is real. A former Mississippi Youth Media Project student I worked with—a brilliant young white woman who attended Murrah High School and now goes to college out of state—tweeted last night that while she loves Mississippi, she doesn’t like it. As much as she was engaged here in trying to lift up the capital city and its public schools, while helping educate others about the state's racist history, I’m not going to hold my breath that she will return to live, perhaps ever.

She is following the path I and so many others chose: Get out before the state killed me with its sexism, racism I’m supposed to share, and cruelty to the less fortunate.

This is especially true for bright young minds because so much of the legislation out of the GOP supermajority is designed to hurt them, especially if they are young people of color, women, an immigrant or LGBTQ. And the state’s leaders disparage them at every turn for thinking differently. If we disagree at all, we are a horrific “liberal” or “socialist” monster—labels that Republicans here hurl around to mean anybody who isn’t a lapdog for Donald Trump or, frankly, someone who believes in true diversity at all tables and race and gender equity in our society.

Free, critical thinking is unacceptable. As Gov. Phil Bryant tweeted yesterday, "Here in Mississippi we are conservatives" ... except we're all not conservatives, and it's our state, too. This language is designed to run off those who don't agree, taking their votes and potential with them, and too often works.

    The Problem with Mississippi Democrats

Then there is the Democratic Party in the state—which, truth be told, has been the real culprit, over all, since I returned in 2002. Compare what just happened in Kentucky as I tweeted last night—a state with 87% white population turned blue. Here, the state with the highest proportion of African Americans in the U.S. at around 38% got redder.

Republicans counter now that the Kentucky incumbent wasn't liked there; well, no one actually likes Tate Reeves here, either, it seems, so that doesn't explain it.

I’ve talked about this for years now—a timid, closed groupthink infects the Mississippi Democratic Party from the top, especially among the white men who traditionally control, fund and strategize for it. Certainly, many of them are well-meaning from a macro level; they talk a lot about education funding, which is vitally important but clearly cannot alone carry this party to victory in pretty much any election. Some burn through a lot of often-quiet funding for good causes—trying to change the Mississippi flag, funding fights for public-education laws—but often won’t put themselves out in front of the issues to take the direct hits and model what it looks like to weather them.

Many Democratic leaders here are afraid of offending white conservative voters to a ridiculous fault. I guess they really believe that voters they would lose by actually supporting women’s rights or learning to speak intelligently about racism to black people are the very ones who would turn around and vote for them if they shoot enough guns in TV ads. It’s theater of the absurd, not to mention funny math.

That ship has sailed, gentlemen. This Democratic race to oblivion found the bottom last night.

Ignore, Belittle Women at Your Peril, Dem Men

But here’s the thing: Women can help you right the ship, Dems, just as they are doing in other states, as last night’s results around the U.S., especially white suburbs, showed. You’re going to have to listen to women and invite us to all the tables, though, even as we start creating more forums of our own that are going to challenge all of you, regardless of party.

If there is anything I learned from visits and conversation with so many women over the last year while I recovered from breast cancer is that we’re all fed up, if we’re not the obedient ones already in cahoots with Pat Robertson or the Family Research Council. Starting with the desire to allow a mother to die rather than having an abortion, the state’s leadership is not on women’s side. Any woman.

Women are also talking to each other about the direct slights from men in power, including in the Democratic Party. While I’m not a partisan type by nature (I actually hate the concept of political parties), I have women friends who work with the party in various ways. Most talk about the sexism they encounter when trying to bring new ideas to the table. They are ignored, patted on the head, treated like they don’t know what they’re talking about.

Last night I texted one of my black women friends who volunteers with the party as the writing on the Mississippi wall became clear. She has a brilliant strategic mind and understands politics and what motivates voters backward and forward.

“We coulda told em,” I wrote.

“They wouldn’t listen to me,” she responded. “I don’t know what I’m taking about.”

But she does know. No matter. When it comes to legislation or campaigns targeted to “rural whites” to the exclusion of others, Dem leaders here expect women, African Americans and other people of color to suck it up and vote for the party, even though it keeps losing.

A major moment in this campaign cycle was when the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor, Jay Hughes, voted for the anti-abortion “heartbeat bill” last session—in the very state where women came together in a grassroots campaign like we've never seen here before or since to defeat the personhood amendment at the polls in 2011. I later saw male strategists trying to take full credit, of course, but it was the bottom-up momentum by women meeting in living rooms that made the difference. My paper ran many columns by women from different backgrounds and political beliefs coming out against personhood that went viral in the state. Women came together like we must do more often.

Like the ads he ran for over a year on a conservative anti-women and racist blog here—the blogger calls women "sluts" and says breast implants should explode and ranks "hottest" young women reporters—Hughes’ reasoning on the heartbeat bill this year was absurd. It was something about making sure white Democrats wouldn’t become extinct. Then last night he took in fewer voters than attorney general candidate Jennifer Riley Collins, a black Democrat the party virtually ignored.

I criticized Hughes' vote rather mildly on Twitter after his heartbeat vote, and got hit with a barrage of personal insults from a sock-puppet account. Apparently, my criticism of his heartbeat bill meant I had a "secret crush" on Hughes.

"Mouth off Yall" tweeted: "It's just been amusing to watch the girl crush that @DonnerKay has had on @Jay4Mississippi over the last year." (Earlier, I had criticized Democrat Hughes for advertising on the misogynistic blog.) He went on: "It's like he dumped her or something. Maybe she's been paid off by the Russians to attack him on everything he does. Just calling balls & strikes here."

My criticism of Hughes couldn't be because I'm a woman, have a degree in political science and a master's in journalism, have watched and commented on politics in Mississippi for years, or because I'm a woman with intelligent opinions. No, it was a "crush." And this one is mild compared to insults I've gotten from Democratic men here with their real names attached. One even lunged at me in a bar one night due to my mayoral endorsement.

This, sadly, is not uncommon for women here. I’ve been called every name for speaking out loud about politics, especially if it is not in lockstep with Democratic leadership logic, which it pretty much never is. Too many men in our state care more about being told they're wrong than actually getting it right.

Many women tell me they are afraid to speak up because they see how men talk to me when I do. They fear losing jobs and opportunities or public smears. Let that sink in.

Sucking It Up for the Party Won’t Work

What I and many other women have been saying for years is now flashing in neon: sucking it up for the party won’t work. What the Dems in Mississippi must do is start today—not in three-and-a-half years—to pack away their defensiveness and create a new kind of welcoming party that doesn’t pander to racists and misogynists. Just go ahead and let the GOP own that. I don’t mean a hard shift to the Bernie Sanders left. I mean the kind of collaboration that can result when more not-white men are invited in, asked for feedback and listened to respectfully. If there’s anything the Mississippi Democratic Party needs right now, it is to put hats firmly in hand, get out into our communities and really listen to people. All of them. The time for timidity and fragility is past.

What must come first is a welcoming attitude to the Democratic tent if that party is to survive here. And, yes, allow a Stacey Abrams into Mississippi to help get out the vote, as well as engage prominent African Americans right here in the state. I mean, look at the mailers and TV ads—Republicans are going to associate Dems, and even reasonable Republicans, with people like Sanders and AOC anyway and call the candidate “socialist” or such no matter what you actually believe. So at least try to get another 50,000 votes out of forming real multiracial coalitions.

Angie Thomas was still tweeting this morning about her decision to leave and take her money with her, even as she still plans to invest back into her community here. “I have plans to create jobs, affordable housing, and recreation. I’m already putting things into place. And I don’t have to live there to do it. What are YOU doing besides Tweeting?” she told people who were complaining about her decision to leave.

She also retweeted @kaykaypolitiks who supported her decision as a way to explain how hard the toxic politics are on black Mississippians not considered welcome here by Republicans. “These elections take a toll on black bodies... creatively, mentally, spiritually, physically etc. I say go where you can be well, @angiecthomas. Much love," @kaykaypolitiks wrote.

I then asked Angie this morning if any Democratic leaders had reached out to her to help them connect to her fan base in the state—kind of an obvious ask for a party that so desperately needs to grow its voter base. The brilliant best-selling author’s answer, sadly, did not surprise me.

“Lol nope. They’re scared to even follow me on social media,” Angie answered.

That just says it all. It's time to wake up, Democrats, to the potential and new voters all around you in Mississippi. Clearly, the alternative is a loser’s game.

But there’s hope in such a dramatic loss for actual Democratic change here to rise from the ashes; the excuses are over. I saw a tweet today from a white male Democrat I’ve tangled with after past elections over the need to hire new strategists in the state who understand the faulty logic of pandering for the same white conservative voters. In our last engagement, he was condescending and dismissive to me.

This morning, he tweeted a mea culpa to his followers: “All is not lost, but things will go SO. MUCH. SLOWER. if white men in this party, including myself, do not directly advocate for more diverse leadership.”

Exactly. Women have been saying that here for a long, long time. It's well past time for men to start listening.

Kenya Moore Reveals Kandi Burruss Is The ‘RHOA’ HBIC & Gets The Biggest Check, Shades NeNe Leakes

     photo BGUS_1776643_009_zps9dtmmo9p.jpg

Kenya Moore says she’s not after her ‘RHOA” co-star NeNe Leakes’ check because she’s not even the top earner. Get into the former Miss USA’s shade-filled daytime TV interview inside…

With the premiere of Season 12 of the “Real Housewives of Atlanta” airing over the weekend, Kenya Moore - pictured today in NYC above and yesterday below - has been heavy on the promo trail (above in NYC). The new mom sat out Season 11 to dedicate her time to her family. Now, she’s back. And with a vengeance.

As the world knows, the former Miss USA and the self-proclaimed HBIC NeNe Leakes do not get along and Kenya made sure to make that very clear. She appeared on the “Wendy Williams Show” to dish on her beef with NeNe and to fire shots, of course.

While talking about her strained marriage with her estranged husband Marc Daly, Wendy chimed in with negative comments NeNe has allegedly made about Kenya not being legally married.

”I’m hopeful. I got married – legally married …" Kenya said.

”That’s not what NeNe says,” Wendy chimed in.

”I don’t know what NeNe says. She needs to worry about her own marriage. I am legally married, OK. Be clear. I have receipts. Don’t talk about my marriage,” Kenya said.

The 48- year-old said she had a “legal ceremony” - not a civil ceremony - in St. Lucia.

     photo Klaid1.jpg

     photo Ken2.jpg

Wendy – who became good friends with NeNe over the summer – asked Kenya why she doesn’t like her. Kenya said she doesn’t feel NeNe is genuine and doesn’t want to be around someone like that.

“When I had a high-risk pregnancy, that I wanted my entire life, she never once called me,” Kenya shared. “When I did show up, she never checked on my child. She never said, ‘Is everything okay?’ when she learned I wasn’t going to be on the show. She never said, ‘Are you okay girl, do you need anything?’ And then when she did see me eight months pregnant, she called me a monster and said that my child was a buffalo and she was hurling insults.”

Kenya said when NeNe saw her while she was 8-months pregnant she started hurling insults, calling her “monster,” said she called her “child a buffalo.”

Ms. Twirl confirmed NeNe did in fact try to spit on her and we’ll see it on the show.

“She tried to act like she was going to spit on me,” Moore recalled, claiming that Leakes was “hawking up” her saliva. “You will see that on the show.”

”But you’re after the paycheck,” Wendy said.

Kenya then revealed it's Kandi Burruss who is the REAL HBIC of "RHOA" as she brings in the most coins.

“Kandi makes the most money, so if I was coming for anybody’s purse and bag, it would be Kandi’s,” Kenya responded. “Kandi is the real HBIC on that show. I’m just a player. I have a nice coin. I love the little bag I take home at night and it feeds my child very well. So I’m not coming for anybody’s money.”

After the premiere of Season 12, Kenya told Andy Cohen on “WWHL” that NeNe is DEAD to her. Sheesh.

    Peep her full interview below:

"RHOA" airs every Sunday at 8/7c on BRAVO.

The San Francisco 49ers are the NFL's last undefeated team, while Russell Wilson is making a very strong case for MVP consideration in Seattle.

Something in the NFC West is about to give.

The 49ers (8-0) have home-field advantage Monday night and have had 10 days to prepare for Seattle (7-2) in the first of two divisional showdowns between the teams this season. The Seahawks get to wrap up the season hosting San Francisco on Dec. 29. They've already lost twice at home, making a road win now even more crucial in the NFC West.

The Seahawks maybe, just maybe, got caught looking ahead last week when Tampa Bay forced them to overtime before Wilson finished off the win with his fifth touchdown pass.

The 49ers just moved to No. 1 in the AP Pro32 poll, with the Seahawks not all that far behind at No. 5. The Niners will counter with Jimmy Garoppolo and a very stingy defense. They're favored by six at home despite having lost nine of the last 10 in this series.

Staying undefeated in the NFL this late in the season isn't easy. Just ask the Patriots.

    UPSET SPECIAL: SEAHAWKS 31, 49ers 30.

No. 19 Los Angeles Chargers (minus 1) at No. 16 Oakland

The Chargers not only have won four straight in this series, they have found something since coach Anthony Lynn fired offensive coordinator KenWhisenhunt. After a big win over Green Bay, not even all the talk about London calling will knock Philip Rivers and Melvin Gordon off target.

    CHARGERS, 24-21

No. 6 Kansas City (minus 3½) at No. 20 Tennessee

NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes is expected back. Tennessee has a habit of playing to the level of its competition, but that won't be enough.

    CHIEFS, 33-30

No. 11 Buffalo (plus 2½) at No. 26 Cleveland

The Bills play very stingy defense and get what they need from their second-year quarterback. Cleveland has so many pieces, but the Browns can't get enough from their second-year quarterback no matter what cleats his receiversare wearing.

    UPSET SPECIAL: BILLS, 21-17

No. 22 Arizona (plus 4½) at No. 25 Tampa Bay

Quarterback Kyler Murray and coach Kliff Kingsbury have the Cardinals far more competitive than expected in their rookie season. Bruce Arians is a much more experienced coach. Better yet, Jameis Winston looks like he's meshing with coordinator Byron Leftwich.

    BUCS, 30-24

No. 27 New York Giants (minus 2½) at No. 31 New York Jets

The black cat should be safely tucked away far from the field, and the Giants are being treated as the true home team as the favorite. It's also been longer since the Giants got a much-needed victory.

    GIANTS, 28-24

KNOCKOUT POOL: Yes! The AP prognostication crew has survived to this point of the season. And yes! It's getting much tougher with nine teams unavailable to find a good bet to stay alive another week. Baltimore would be the easy pick visiting winless Cincinnati, but the Ravens were the Week 6 pick. Indianapolis is very tempting hosting Miami, but FitzMagic is real — until it isn't.

No. 28 Atlanta (plus 13) visiting No. 2 New Orleans makes the Saints the easy choice, even with both teams coming off their byes.

    SAINTS, 34-20

No. 4 Baltimore (minus 10) at Cincinnati

The NFL's last winless team is starting rookie Ryan Finley, which is why Baltimore would have been the knockout pool pick. Instead, this consolation prize.

    BEST BET: RAVENS, 30-14

No. 14 Carolina (plus 5) at No. 7 Green Bay

How long will the Packers' LA hangover last? Aaron Rodgers is back home facing Kyle Allen.

    PACKERS: 30-21

No. 18 Detroit (plus 2 ½) at No. 23 Chicago

The Lions have a much shorter trip than last week to the West Coast. The Bears have bigger issues on offense.

    LIONS, 20-18

No. 29 Miami (plus 10 ½) at No. 13 Indianapolis

Getting one win this season was surprising enough out of the Dolphins.

    COLTS, 28-20

No. 12 Los Angeles Rams (minus 3½) at No. 17 Pittsburgh

The Rams are rested thanks to their bye and looking for a third consecutive win. The Steelers have won three straight to climb back to .500, and they're at home.

    RAMS, 26-21

No. 8 Minnesota (plus 3) at No. 10 Dallas

Kirk Cousins and Dalvin Cook taking on Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott. The Cowboys are at home.

    COWBOYS, 30-24

    2019 RECORD:

Last Week: 7-6 against spread, 9-5 straight up.

Season Totals: 73-60-1 against spread, 85-48-1 straight up.

Best Bet: 7-2 against spread, 7-2 straight up.

Upset special: 5-4 against spread, 5-4 straight up.

Fantasy Football: Top Waiver Wire Pickups For Week 10

    Cache

(670 The Score) Here are my top 10 waiver adds for 10- and 12-member fantasy leagues for Week 10 of the NFL season.

    1. Ronald Jones (RB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers) – Jones should be long gone by now, as he’s been a high-upside stash on a high-octane offense who I've written about before, but somehow he's only owned in 40 percent of Yahoo leagues. Jones dominated the workload Sunday, touching the ball 20 times for 82 yards and a score. Meanwhile, Peyton Barber was limited to four touches. Grab Jones and don’t look back.

    2. Zach Pascal (WR, Indianapolis Colts) –  Pascal is available in 80 percent of Yahoo leagues. I’m guessing folks didn’t take his breakout game on Oct. 20 too seriously, but they will after his five-catch, 76-yard, one-touchdown performance Sunday and given the fact that T.Y. Hilton is out for another two to three weeks. Pascal did plenty of damage with reserve quarterback Brian Hoyer in the game too, so don’t let that stop you from making him a priority addition.

    3. Josh Reynolds (WR, Los Angeles Rams) – Brandin Cooks suffered another concussion in Week 8 and while early reports have been positive, coach Sean McVay has said Cooks’ health is the first priority. With the uncertainty around whether Cooks will suit up this coming Sunday, grabbing Reynolds would be smart. He came in after Cooks exited on Oct. 27 and had 73 receiving yards and a touchdown. We’ve seen Reynolds in this role before, as he filled in when Cooper Kupp went down with an injury in 2018.

    4. Preston Williams/DeVante Parker (WR, Miami Dolphins) – The Dolphins earned their first win of the season against the lowly Jets on Sunday, and Williams flashed once again. He snagged five balls for 72 yards and two touchdowns, though he did leave the game with a knee injury. He’s having an MRI on Monday, so stay tuned on the severity. If he's out for any length of time, Parker is worth adding in his place. Parker has topped the 50-yard mark in his last three games and has scored a touchdown in four of the last five contests. The offense looks better under Ryan Fitzpatrick’s command, so Parker and/or Williams are worth a roster spot as a WR3/4.

    5. Derrius Guice (RB, Washington Redskins) – After the Redskins having a bye week, Guice is due back in Week 11 and should assume lead duties. While the Redskins aren’t a good team, Adrian Peterson has been fantasy relevant lately, and Guice is a superior player at this point in their careers. Beyond that, if the Redskins continue to start rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins, they'll rely on the running game to protect him. That would mean more work for Guice, who's one of the few running backs whom you can add now and land guaranteed touches as we near the fantasy playoffs.

    6. Hunter Renfrow (WR, Oakland Raiders) –  Renfrow received a lot of hype in the offseason and he’s finally starting to breakthrough as a weapon for quarterback Derek Carr. Over the last two weeks, Renfrow has caught a combined 10 passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner in a victory against the Lions on Sunday. The Raiders are playing good football, and Renfrow is a part of that. Take this stat with a grain of salt that Tyrell Williams has missed two games due to injury, but Renfrow leads Raiders wide receivers with 37 targets.

    7. Ryquell Armstead (RB, Jacksonville Jaguars) –  Much like Tony Pollard, Reggie Bonnafon, Latavius Murray and any other good running back behind a stalwart fantasy RB1, Armstead is in a position to make a major splash if anything happens to Leonard Fournette. Armstead caught all five of his targets against for 65 yards against the Texans on Sunday, so we know he can play in the passing game. That’s key because there aren’t many running backs behind a bellcow back who will step in and assume full three-down duties. Armstead is one of them, and Fournette has one of the heaviest workloads in all of football.

    8. N’Keal Harry (WR, New England Patriots) – Harry was activated last week but didn't appear in the Patriots' loss to the Ravens on Sunday night. After making the Patriots' bye this week, Harry should make an impact in a good matchup against the Eagles in Week 11. We’ve seen other rookie receivers making an impact this season, and the Patriots are in need of a splash receiver with good ball skills and a red-zone presence. We’ll see if Harry can make good on those needs, but he’s certainly worth adding now given the upside he might provide.

    9. Brian Hill (RB, Atlanta Falcons) – It’s about upside at this point in the season, and it was interesting to find after the trade deadline passed that the Falcons almost shipped Devonta Freeman to the Lions. Beyond that, Ito Smith has also been dealing with a concussion. That makes Hill as an upside stash. Neither Freeman nor Smith have looked great, and Hill has made the most of his touches in the Falcons' last game on Oct. 27, including a 23-yard touchdown run in which he made several defenders miss. We’ve seen crazier developments than a third-string running back taking over and carrying a team through the fantasy playoffs.

    10. Olabisi Johnson (WR, Minnesota Vikings) – Adam Thielen aggravated his hamstring injury Sunday and didn't return to the game. Johnson is going to be hit-or-miss in his place as the passing game will funnel through Stefon Diggs, but he has managed to score in two of the last three games. I’m not running to add Johnson, but if we get some news Thielen is out for an extended period of time, he may be worth looking at with three bye weeks left across the NFL.

Just missed: Tony Pollard, Wayne Gallman, Reggie Bonnafon, Gio Bernard, Benny Snell Jr., Trey Edmunds, J.D. McKissic, Cole Beasley, Keelan Cole, Alex Erickson, Jacob Hollister and Chris Herndon.

Pitt Overcomes 3 Turnovers, Beats Georgia Tech 20-10

    Cache

    By CHARLES ODUM

ATLANTA (AP) — Kenny Pickett threw for 204 yards with a touchdown, Vincent Davis had a 61-yard touchdown run and Pittsburgh overcame three first-half turnovers to beat Georgia Tech 20-10 on Saturday.

Pitt (6-3, 3-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) held Georgia Tech (2-6, 1-4) to 194 yards.

The Pitt defense stopped the Yellow Jackets inches short of a potential tying touchdown late in the third quarter. Quarterback Lucas Johnson fumbled at the goal line when hit by Kylan Johnson. Cam Bright returned the fumble recovery 79 yards.

The return set up Alex Kessman’s 48-yard field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter for a 20-10 lead.

Davis took a wildcat snap, ran through the middle of the line and made one cut to his left before finding open field for a 61-yard touchdown run to give Pitt a 10-0 lead in the first quarter.

Pickett’s 21-yard touchdown pass to Shocky Jacques-Louis in the second quarter stretched the halftime lead to 17-7.

The Panthers committed three first-half turnovers. Pickett threw two interceptions in the half, including one off the hands of tight end Nakia Griffin-Stewart that was caught by Yellow Jackets safety Tariq Carpenter.

In the first quarter, safety Juanyeh Thomas cut in front of Maurice Ffrench for Georgia Tech’s first interception.

Georgia Tech couldn’t convert either interception into points but quickly capitalized when Ffrench’s fumble, forced by linebacker David Curry, was recovered by Jordan Domineck. On the next play, James Graham threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to Ahmarean Brown.

After Graham completed only 2 of 9 passes for 54 yards in the first half, coach Geoff Collins started Johnson at quarterback in the second half. Johnson was escorted to the locker room following the big hit on his fumble at the goal line.

Graham played the remainder of the game.

Georgia Tech’s Jerry Howard blocked Kirk Christodoulou’s punt on Pitt’s first possession of the second half. The Yellow Jackets recovered at the Pitt 12, setting up a 30-yard field goal by Brenton King that cut the Panthers’ lead to seven points.

Ffrench had 11 catches for 71 yards.

Pitt sophomore running back Todd Sibley, the team’s second-leading rusher, was held out with an undisclosed injury.

Panthers linebacker Phil Campbell III was ejected in the second quarter after a targeting call for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Graham.

    THE TAKEAWAY

Pitt: The Panthers rebounded from last week’s loss to Miami and remain in position to contend for a second straight Coastal Division title and trip to the ACC championship game. There were blemishes in the win as Pitt struggled with mistakes. In addition to the turnovers, Pitt struggled on special teams. The Panthers had a punt blocked and Ffrench made a questionable decision to field a kickoff near the sideline at the 7.

Georgia Tech: The Yellow Jackets showed why they rank last in the ACC in scoring. The two quarterbacks combined to complete only 8 of 21 passes for 108 yards. Graham, a redshirt freshman, made an ill-advised deep pass in the fourth quarter that was intercepted by Paris Ford. After running for 141 yards in a win at Miami two weeks ago, Jordan Mason had 15 carries for 56 yards.

    UP NEXT

Pittsburgh: The Panthers are off next weekend before playing North Carolina in a Thursday night game on Nov. 14. North Carolina has six straight wins in the series, including a 38-35 win in 2018.

Georgia Tech: The Yellow Jackets play at Virginia next Saturday. Georgia Tech beat the Cavaliers 30-27 in overtime last season and has won seven of the last 10 to lead the series 21-19-1.

Dems may have something to use against Trump — but it may backfire

The Democrats may finally be getting something to use against President Trump that people will care about. But there’s a catch. The US economy in the fourth quarter looks to be rising at just a 1% annual rate, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. And year-to-year corporate profits in the third quarter of...
