Sacramento State racks up 471 yards of offense, upsets No. 22 Eastern Washington 48-27

Cache

SACRAMENTO, California – A towel on his head and hands on his face, Eastern Washington quarterback Eric Barriere appeared dejected as he sat alone on the Hornet Stadium bench midway through the second quarter.

Barriere was shelved for portions of the second and third quarters after being looked at by trainers for an unspecified injury, but Sacramento State had already established a two-touchdown lead before his initial exit, including a Barriere interception that turned into a 27-yard scoring return.

When the Walter Payton Award candidate returned after a few fruitless drives with backup Gunner Talkington, the Eagles regained their pulse, pulling within a possession of the resurgent Hornets, who then had a clock-eating touchdown drive for a 41-27 lead.

George Obinna then proceeded to add an exclamation point.

Sacramento State’s star defensive end picked up a Barriere fumble in the final 2 minutes and rumbled 73 yards for the Hornets’ in a convincing 48-27 upset of the swooning Eagles.

The Hornets (3-2, 1-0 Big Sky) totaled 471 yards against EWU, their first home win over the Eagles in program history.

The Eagles (2-4, 1-1) were picked to win the Big Sky and were ranked as high as No. 4 in the preseason. With five games remaining, they will likely have to win out for a chance at a playoff berth or a possible share of the title.

EWU offensive tackle Chris Schlichting held back emotion as he voiced his frustration over the loss and the program’s worst start since 2011.

“We have potential All-Americans all throughout that locker room, we have dudes who know what they’re doing, so this is just hard,” Schlichting said. “Especially since you want to win for the fans and win for this university, then you do stuff like this.”

Sacramento State, led by former EWU offensive coordinator Troy Taylor, was also menacing on defense.

Leading the Big Sky in fewest points allowed heading into the game, Sacramento State piled up seven sacks in its first win over an Football Championship Subdivision Top 25 team since 2012.

Hornets quarterback Kevin Thomson orchestrated a lengthy, 13-play touchdown drive in the fourth quarter to make it 41-27 with 6:16 remaining that took away the Eagles’ momentum.

Thomson, an Auburn, Washington, native, passed for 315 yards and three touchdowns, helping the Hornets jump out to an early 21-7 lead. He wasn’t sacked.

Elijah Dotson also frustrated the Eagles with 103 rushing yards.

The typically downtrodden Hornets have also shut out Northern Colorado 50-0 and gave brawny Football Bowl Subdivision foes Arizona State (19-7 loss) and Fresno State (34-20 loss) fits.

“We came in with the expectation to win the game, and nobody blinked,” said Taylor, an offensive coordinator at EWU in 2016. “Everyone bought it and it’s nice to see them rewarded with a big win.”

EWU came out hot, though.

The Eagles scored on the game’s opening possession, a 12-play drive capped by Barriere’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Talolo Limu-Jones.

When Barriere left in the second quarter with his team trailing, the Eagles were ineffective. Talkington struggled through a series of three-and-out drives, completing 2 of 11 passes for 27 yards, and was sacked twice.

“We’re depleted, but so what – that’s not an excuse,” EWU coach Aaron Best said. “We’re not good enough in some areas. We aren’t disciplined enough in areas. We don’t make enough plays in areas and we hold too much on offense.”

Barriere completed 22 of 42 passes for 309 yards, two touchdowns an interception and rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries, a statistic boosted by a 92-yard touchdown run in the first half.

“He was shifty, hard to tackle,” Obinna said of Barriere. “Every time he ran out of the pocket, it was an extra effort. But just trusting everyone to do their job is what it came down to.”

EWU’s Jayson Williams hauled in seven passes for 129 yards a touchdown and Dehonta Hayes and a game-high 17 tackles. Hayes was also ejected for a late targeting penalty.

Timbers Step Up, Qualify for Postseason in Style

Heading into the decisive final day of the MLS regular season, there were plenty of bad omens for a struggling Portland Timbers team in need of a result to qualify for the playoffs.

Brian Fernandez was suspended. Diego Valeri was out with a lingering calf injury. And the San Jose Earthquakes were coming into Providence Park with everything to play for — in need of a win to keep their own season alive.

This time, though, after a month of of ugly soccer and bad breaks and disappointing results, the Timbers got the job done and did it with room to spare.

Goals from Larrys Mabiala, Dairon Asprilla, and Sebastian Blanco were more than enough to lift the Timbers to their first win in six games on a lovely fall afternoon, jump into sixth place in the Western Conference, and bring the curtain down on San Jose's remarkable season.

All of the sudden, after all they endured this fall, the Timbers can look forward to a third-straight playoff appearance that will begin with a game against Real Salt Lake — a team that they've already beaten twice this year, at a venue that they've won at in both of their previous visits under Giovani Savarese.

Things are looking up. Facing the biggest test of their season, the Timbers had the right gameplan and executed it to near-perfection.

With San Jose man-marking in the ubiquitous system installed by their Argentinian manager Matias Almeyda, Savarese — in a move reminiscent of Portland's surge last fall — set his team up to defend deep and hit the 'Quakes on the break.

The early returns were positive. The Timbers nearly took the lead after a quarter of an hour when a Blanco corner hit Chris Wondolowski and forced San Jose goalkeeper Daniel Vega into a sprawling save, and generally were contesting the game on their terms.

The Timbers were getting traction going forward, and while the Earthquakes had plenty of the ball — they'd finish with 61 percent possession and complete nearly 200 more passes than the Timbers did — they were completely unable to break down the Timbers' defensive lines.

A slaloming, one-man run aside, Jorge Villafaña held the dangerous Cristian Espinoza was held in check. Vako completed only four passes during the entirety of the half on the opposite flank, Wondolowski just two from his position at center forward.

The Timbers' attack was limited somewhat with Asprilla and Andy Polo playing on the wings, but with Ebobisse dealing up top and Blanco slashing through the middle, it had a balance that had often been missing over the last several months.

It was on a set piece, though, that the Timbers would strike first.

Just before the half hour mark, Asprilla settled a recycled corner on the edge of the penalty area and slipped a ball wide left for an onrushing Villafaña, who whipped a pass across the face of goal that Mabiala, who had stayed in the box after the initial clearance, stuck out his trailing leg and dragged in.

Just like that, San Jose was in serious trouble — in need of multiple goals, with a third of the game gone, having failed to create a single significant chance yet. But they still had Wondolowski, and, with him, the ability to conjure a goal from thin air.

With halftime closing in and the score 1-0, that's exactly with they did. Off of a pre-planned corner routine, Espinoza hit a cross to the near post and the 36-year-old record MLS goalscorer beat everyone to the ball and flicked a diving header off of the ground, off of the underside of the crossbar, and in to tie the game.

IM2.jpg
Craig Mitchelldyer/Portland Timbers
It was vintage Wondolowski — a purely instinctual, fearless finish, his record eleventh goal against Portland, a one of the most important of his season.

As the second half began, with Dallas running riot over Sporting Kansas City, everything was on the table. One of these teams was going to be playing its final 45 minutes of the season, one was going to move on.

Enter, not for the first time and not ever unremarkably, Asprilla. Handed his first start in a month ahead of Marvin Loría, the Colombian with a penchant for scoring the most timely of goals repaid Savarese's faith with another memorable contribution.

Just before the hour mark, Asprilla drifted inside to pick up a cross-field pass from Ebobisse, cut past Florien Jungwirth with an excellent first touch, and went barreling through on goal. Vega stopped his first shot, but the rebound squibbed underneath him — and Asprilla, at the second time of asking, tucked it in.

Whatever his past, for a player who has had the most abject of seasons, this was a stunning moment: a truly excellent goal, all of his own making, thanks to the kind of decisive turn of pace that you almost never see him make when he receives the ball.

At this time of the year, though, there's no rhyme or reason when it comes to Asprilla. He's just a different player.

Almeyda emptied his bench almost immediately the goal, making all three of his substitutions and trying to push his team — again in search of two goals, now with just 30 minutes left to play — into a more overtly attacking posture.

In the process, which included removing a defensive midfielder, the 'Quakes opened themselves up on the counter. The Timbers had several chance to ice the game in the following minutes, with Ebobisse and Cristhian Paredes coming closest, but it'd take a special moment from Blanco to make the result secure.

With a quarter of an hour to play, and Valeri off the field, it was the diminutive Argentine who stepped to a free kick from 25 yards away and fired it into the top corner.

No player on the field more deserved to score. The Timbers were never worse over the last month than when Blanco was out of the lineup, and on a day when they were missing their two most high profile attackers, he brought the heat in every phase of the game.

With that, San Jose was buried. They finished the season having lost six straight, a sour end to an otherwise triumphant first MLS campaign for Almeyda.

The Timbers' run-in wasn't much prettier. But Savarese, who has never missed the postseason as a manager, was understandably pleased with his team's perseverance. They didn't throw in the towel, and they made it to the finish line with their season intact.

"It has been a very difficult season in so many ways," Savarese said after the game. "So that’s why I think even in this moment that we have been able to make the playoffs, I’m more proud than ever for all the guys we have on the team.”

The slate is clean. Salt Lake away, a team the Timbers know they can beat, and then the specter of another playoff meeting with Seattle. The possibilities, just as they should at this time of the year, abound.

Comment on Why Do Betas Push Theory That Insults Them? by Bob

Cache

Well I think, even though men are told to be more superficial and visual with their sexuality. I think looks and body play if in addition to the fame. Because then you have sex appeal added to the fame. Look at it this way as far as actors. You've heard of heart throbs right? Weren't these men whether in the 80s, 90s, current times, good looking, fit guys? You know who comedian Kevin James is? Famous, funny comedian/actor. He was in funny show King of Queens and was in Grown ups movie with Adam Sandler, etc. He's a husky, average looking guy. I like his shows. I'm not saying there aren't women going after him. but who do you think has much more women linking up to have sex with him. Chris or Liam Hemsworth, Channing Tatum, George Clooney, vs Kevin James? You know and I know much more women are desiring liam, Channing and George vs Kevin james. Adam Levine is slim, and pretty decent looking guy, better looking than Singer Meat loaf for sure. I know he's old now and I'm sure he had women. But I feel much more women would be going after Adam Levine for sex compared to Meatloaf. Notice, no matter how famous, Actors who look like and built like Kevin James aren't heart throbs or sex symbols like men who look like George Clooney or Hemsworth with bodies like Hemsworth? So the fame is big, but apparently aesthetics paired with that fame play a role too otherwise, kevin james would be the heart throb and sex symbol like Brad Pitt and such.

Commodore 64 IRC Success

I was able to get my Commodore 64 under its own power to access the IRC chat rooms, specifically the BigDaddyLinuxLive room where I was able to chat with such folks as Bill, Popey, Chris and another Allen. It is very satisfying experience. More on that here:

Tech in the Courtroom

I recently had jury duty and the courthouse in my small-ish community, Windows 7 which is near end of life. For each bit of evidence, they used CDs and DVDs to store each individual item as evidence.

Building a Computer

I am building a computer for the first time in a very long time. I want to do it on a budget. I received some components at no cost to me, the case and motherboard so that drove the purchasing of the rest of the products.

Motherboard MSI 970A-G43

AMD FX-9590 CPU

Memory, 32 GiB DDR3 1866MHz

Video Card RX570

Storage 6x 2-TiB drives

1000 Watt Power Supply

Rather large case

All for about $350.00

More on this in the future.

Eric Adams talked about how people can get “bug apathy” when they experience a problem on Linux or other open source software. know that I am guilty of that.

Bug reporting is something we Linux or free and open source software users should do. The vast majority of the software I don’t pay for, it’s open source and I believe that I have a social contract with these developers and maintainers to either help with the project or donate to it.

Girl on the gridiron: Meet Waverly's Savanna Johnson

Cache

When we take one another at face value, we tend to miss things.

We do that by assuming we know who someone should or shouldn't be.

We do that by not taking the time to appreciate who's underneath that outward appearance.

Savanna Johnson is a sophomore at Waverly High School. On the varsity football team, she's number 28 and plays both defensive back and running back.

"I just enjoy it," she said. "It's fun to me."

She's been on the gridiron since she was little, going back to first grade. She skipped playing her freshman year of high school because she didn't realize she was allowed to play. Before this season started she had a talk with head coach Chris Crabtree.

"I was pretty up front with her like it's going to be hard work, but if you can make it through it, who am I to stop you," Crabtree said.

So she tied her cleats, strapped on her pads and buckled her helmet and decided to go head-to-head on the turf with about 50 boys.

"When I first started, I was like what if they don't accept me," she said. "But, they've gotten used to me being there."

One player, in particular, was already used to her.

"Yeah, she wants to do it, she can do anything she wants," Laine Johnson said.

That's because Laine Johnson is Savanna's twin brother.

Savanna Johnson stands with her twin brother, Laine. They're holding their brothers, also twins (WBNS - 10TV)

"She's just another player," he said. "I don't treat her any different. She's just part of the team."

Part of the team and part of the family. It's a brotherhood, really, both on and off the field.

In fact, after a date to homecoming fell through, Savanna ended up going with someone else; a teammate.

Playing time is limited as a sophomore, but at last Friday's game, the newest running back checked in for the first time in her varsity career, took the handoff and ran for a few yards before being tackled.

She knows there's a stigma; a girl playing a predominantly male sport. She doesn't care about that. All she cares about is knowing she's more than what people think at face value.

"Just like the feeling it gives me, I guess," she said. "Just joy. Even if I'm on the sideline, I'm still there."

It's who she is underneath, and she hopes anyone who sees her playing football has the courage to do what brings them joy.

"If you have a passion for it, do it no matter what," she said.
