May I simply say what a comfort to discover a person that really understands what they are discussing over the internet. You certainly realize how to bring an issue to light and make it important. A lot more people need to look at this and understand this side of the story. I was surprised you're not more popular because you surely possess the gift.
   - adidas Group Presents 2014 Sustainability Progress Report ‘Make A Difference’

The report is an annual overview of achievements and challenges as well as a progress update on its 2015 sustainability targets.

April 22, 2015 /3BL Media/ - The adidas Group has published its 2014 Sustainability Progress Report, an annual overview of achievements and challenges as well as a progress update on its 2015 sustainability targets. The report is the 15th published by the company so far.

Some highlights of the 2014 Sustainability Progress Report include:

  • In 2014, the company revised its Code of Conduct for its employees.
  • The SMS worker hotline, launched at the end of 2012, was expanded to a total of twenty-five factories across Indonesia and Vietnam, covering roughly 160,000 factory workers.

  • In 2014 the adidas Group used more sustainable cotton than ever before, as the company sourced more than 30% of all its cotton as Better Cotton, exceeding the originally planned 25% target. The adidas Group has committed to source 100% of cotton across all product categories in all its brands as ‘sustainable cotton’ by 2018.
  • The product offer integrating DryDye fabric has steadily increased, reaching four million yards of DryDye fabric produced by the end of 2014, and saving 100 million litres of water.

  • The company opened its first 'green' retail concept in the HomeCourt store in Nuremberg, Germany.
  • A total of 143 environmental audits were performed at the Group's suppliers. This number includes specific chemical management audits.

  • To further improve its chemical management programme, the adidas Group entered into a strategic partnership with bluesign technologies. This partnership is already bringing multiple benefits such as the even more responsible use of resources in the manufacturing process.
  • To achieve convergence and consistency of monitoring tools, the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC) Higg 2.0 Index Environmental Facility Module was integrated into the company's environmental supply chain work, replacing the current environmental audit tool.

This year's report is available online as PDF. Additional information is available on the adidas Group Blog. To provide any feedback about the sustainability programme and its reporting, please direct questions and/or comments to

North Vietnamese K-50M Submachine Gun

This is lot #545 in the upcoming RIA Premier Auction. It was scheduled for April, but has been postponed - check their web site for upcoming Online Only auctions every month, though!

The K-50M was a North Vietnamese modification of the PPSh-41 submachine gun to mimic the handling of a French MAT-49. Made from Chinese Type 50 guns (which were direct copies of the original PPSh-41) in small shops, the K-50M used a wholly new lower receiver assembly. This new lower fitted an AK pistol grip and a collapsing wire stock patterned after the MAT-49. The barrel was kept intact, but the barrel shroud was shortened, the muzzle brake/compensator removed, and a new AK (or SKS) style of front sight block added. Mechanically, the guns remained unchanged, firing from an open bolt in 7.62x25mm Tokarev caliber, with the semiauto selector switch of the original Shpagin. The K-50M is compatible with PPSh-41 drums (allowing for fitting issues), but was issued with 35-round box magazines.

Art for Human Rights: Peace Now!, thru Jul 12

In the spring of 1970, President Richard Nixon announced an expansion of the Vietnam War into eastern Cambodia. After fifteen years in Vietnam, the maneuver prompted outrage across an already divided United States. Nixon and other conservative politicians, tired of near-constant dissent, focused their energies on vocal university students who protested the war. Nixon called them “bums,” while Ohio Governor James Rhodes went so far as to refer to student protesters as “the worst type of people that we harbor in America.” Rhodes would permit police and the National Guard to use force against campus protesters—a decision that led to the death of four students at Kent State University in Ohio on May 4, 1970. Ten days later, two more students were killed at Jackson University in Mississippi.

Nationwide, colleges and universities closed their campuses in response, but at UC Berkeley a coalition of students, faculty, and staff formed to protest the escalating violence abroad and at home. Rapidly, they produced silkscreen posters on any surface available—used computer paper, old festival posters, pieces of cardboard—and plastered them across the campus and the cities of Berkeley and Oakland.

Fifty years later, Peace Now! presents a selection of these posters from BAMPFA’s collection and places them in context with other protest material created at and around UC Berkeley in the sixties and seventies. The latest entry in the museum’s ongoing Art for Human Rights series, the exhibition considers the materiality, ephemerality, and utility of posters as tools for social and political intervention, and speaks to the sense of urgency, anger, and vulnerability felt by students coming of age during that tumultuous time. It offers contemporary viewers the opportunity to reflect on an era in our country’s history when we were at war with one another while waging war abroad, and politicians targeted college students as enemies of the state.

The Art of Protest, thru Apr 30

This exhibit showcases original silk-screen political posters from the 1960s and 1970s on the 50th Anniversary of the Great Poster Workshop in Wurster Hall in May 1970, triggered by the killing of four students at Kent State University in Ohio. UC Berkeley, the birthplace of the Free Speech Movement, paved the way for mass protests and prolonged student strikes across the country against the Vietnam War and the draft, for black liberation and ethnic studies, and for a variety of other struggles for social justice. This legacy of protest continues to be felt in the social movements of today.

Top Fall Hiking Trails Near Toronto

Hiking trails near Toronto are beautiful any time of the year, but especially during fall. Fall is definitely my favourite season – with all the beautiful colours, brisk air, giant sweaters, and hot beverages, whats not to love! There’s pumpkin patches to visit, giant cornfields, tasty pumpkin treats, and so much more that make me look forward to this season all year long. Of course, the season definitely doesn’t last long if you happen to live in Canada! We are lucky if we get more than a month of nice fall weather before it gets really cold or rainy, unfortunately. But, it definitely makes you take advantage of the fall weather you do have for that short period of time! My top thing to do in fall is to go hiking. I love wandering through the forest with the colourful leaves falling everywhere, and the views that overlook kilometres of colourful leaves. I definitely prefer to hike in the fall because of the temperature as well – I don’t have to worry about being too hot or getting a sunburn! I am lucky to live in Toronto where there are plenty of hiking trails nearby that are great for day trips and/ or weekend excursions. A lot of these places are closer to Hamilton, which is actually closer to my hometown. The Niagara Escarpment creates beautiful waterfall, lookouts and hiking trails near the Toronto area, and there are quite beautiful trails to hike during the fall season! 1. Dundas Peak Dundas Peak is definitely the most popular spot in this area due to the picturesque views from the lookouts. Accessible via the Spencer Gorge Conservation Area, the trails make for an incredible Autumn walk. The forest is filled with different types of trees, all with varying shades of red, orange, and green. The hike along the escarpment will bring you to the main lookout point, where you overlook kilometres of foliage, towns, and train tracks! I enjoy visiting Dundas Peak year round, but the Fall colours make the views that much more mesmerizing! 2. Rattlesnake Point This conservation area is located in Milton, Ontario and covers approximately 100 square kilometres near the Niagara Escarpment. It is a go-to destination for rock climbers, with walls of varying difficulties spanning the 10 kilometres of cliff-edge throughout the park. These cliffs are not just for rock climbing, but make for incredible views of the surrounding areas! The park is filled with ancient Cedar trees, some over 800 years old. If you’re interested in camping, Rattlesnake Point offers 18 campsites, which are typically open during the Fall season. 3. Devil’s Punch Bowl This conservation area is home to two waterfalls and stunning trails hidden away along the Niagara Escarpment. It was created at the end of the last ice age, where giant rivers plunged over the Escarpment, carving out the gorge. You can see different layers of colourful rock throughout the gorge, where the main 37 metre waterfall plunges over. Nearby, you can see a 10 metre tall cross overlooking the gorge, which is lit up at night. As with the other places outlined in this post, the area surrounding Devil’s Punch Bowl offers great autumn views of Hamilton and area, spanning for many kilometres. 4. Albion Falls Albion Falls is Hamilton area’s most popular waterfall, and one of the most picturesque. The water falls down rippled rock, and is about 18 metres wide and 19 metres tall. Although there is no access to the base of the waterfall, there are a couple of amazing view points and trails throughout the area. 5. Webster’s Falls This may be my favourite waterfall in the Hamilton area. It is 22-metres long and spills over a tiered drop. It is situated in the Websters Falls Conservation Area, which is a gorgeous spot to visit with all the autumn colours. It definitely has a beautiful hiking trail near Toronto! The hike is generally easy to navigate, with wooden stairs and cobblestone bridges along the way. It’s great to bring the family and get lost in nature for a few hours! Nearby, there is also Tew’s Falls – Hamilton’s tallest waterfall. There isn’t a trail connecting the two waterfalls, but it is a quick drive between the parking lots. Then, you can see two waterfalls in less than half a day! Have you been to any hiking trails near Toronto? Where was your favourite spot? Guestwords: Creativity in the Age of Corona by Andrea Grover

Guestwords: Creativity in the Age of Corona by Andrea Grover editor Thu, 03/26/2020 - 13:12
The Grover pirate crew in the Bahamas in 1977. The author appears in the foreground wearing a straw hat.

I’ve always loved disaster films, I just never hoped to be living through one. A few years ago, I heard Max Brooks (the son of Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft) on NPR talking about how he became a writer of zombie books and a sought-after consultant on epidemics. It turns out that his celebrity parents had an apocalyptic plan in place, just in case, and would ask questions over dinner like, “At what point would we eat the family dog?”

I grew up in an environment with similar imaginations. My mother was an artist and a forager who would often pull the car off the road to pick some wild berries that she would shove unwashed into our mouths, and my father, a boatman, tested our skills by leaving his five kids clamming on an island in the Great South Bay, with no sunblock, food, water, or tools, and a vague time for pickup. We’d come home sunburned, with matted hair, and he’d have a good laugh while my mom cleaned us up.

It wasn’t cruel, it was fun for us. We loved their creativity and spontaneity. One day we’d be in Catholic School, and the next morning we’d be sailing to the Bahamas, seven people on a sailboat meant to sleep four. My bunk was a bookshelf with a floatation cushion. We fished for our dinner, survived foul weather, and fought over stale cookies. Every one of us was nearly left back a grade in elementary school for unexcused absences.

Jump ahead to 2019. After a hard day’s work, I became hooked on a few streaming TV series: “The Leftovers,” “Wayward Pines,” “Under the Dome” — the first series brilliant, the second two terrible. But they all had one thing in common: An unknown catastrophic world event has happened and a group of unrelated people are forced to be together in a small town for eternity because the rest of the world is unsafe or inaccessible. Kind of like the 1990s hit TV series “Northern Exposure” if everything outside of Cicely, Alaska, was a zombie wasteland.

Or like the 1972 disaster film “The Poseidon Adventure” (with the all-star cast of Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Jack Albertson, Shelley Winters, and Red Buttons), in which people of disparate backgrounds are forced together to cooperatively figure out a way out of the hull of an overturned ship, or die. The cast typically includes a doctor, a former athlete, the sheriff, the businessman, the waitress, the priest — one of every type.

As I binged on “The Leftovers,” a masterpiece about a community trying to act normal after 2 percent of the global population disappeared from life mid-sentence, I wondered why we had a surge in the genre of small towns dealing with the aftermath of doomsday. There’s always a reason certain subjects come to the fore at different periods in history. The “Heimat” film (wholesome bucolic stories) was a soothing staple of post-World War II Germany as the country was grappling with a new toxic identity. Horror films about mad and dysfunctional families, like “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “The Hills Have Eyes,” were box office hits during and immediately following the Vietnam War, when American ideals of the perfect nuclear family were dismantled as young soldiers returned home with physical and mental trauma.

I often say, artists see the future. Authors of speculative fiction have an especially advanced capacity for imagining tomorrow. In 1945, the writer Arthur C. Clarke predicted geostationary communications satellites 15 years ahead of NASA’s launch of Echo, the agency’s first experimental communications satellite project. In 1941, Isaac Asimov popularized the term “robotics” in his short story “Liar!” long before robots became part of the vernacular. Aldous Huxley foresaw cloning in “Brave New World,” 1932, decades before Dolly the sheep was made incarnate (again), and countless other authors and artists envisioned the future before it was written. More recently, in 2011, Steven Soderbergh directed the film “Contagion,” which imagined how a deadly virus could travel globally in a matter of weeks by, guess what? Touching your face.

Jump ahead to March 21, 2020: We are in the early stages of a very real global pandemic related to the spread of COVID-19 and being told to stop touching our faces, or anyone else, for that matter. I am quarantined in the small town of Sag Harbor, with a cast of characters that includes my two teenage daughters, Lola and Gigi, my husband, Carlos, and a handful of friends who I take “safe distance” beach walks with daily.

Suddenly, every parent is a homeschooler, and everyone is an artist. Joseph Beuys was right. We’re playing music, performing, dancing, writing stories, and making art. Creative expression is at an all-time high. Who could spare the time for this two weeks ago? Priorities back then that seemed critical, like getting to work on time and keeping the mortgage paid, have radically shifted. Could we live smaller? Work less? Spend more time together?

Observation, slowing down, and time in nature have become essential to maintaining sanity. With each passing day, my circle of associations gets smaller and smaller. I speak with two to three co-workers daily, my parents and my siblings make funny, insider humor check-ins, and I eat three square meals with my husband and kids. All other non-essential relationships have gone virtual.

Were my parents right to pluck us out of reality and challenge our imaginations? And to routinely tell us that everything we thought mattered, like graduating from elementary school, was an illusion? One thing is clear, artists, writers, and creative people have advanced skills for surviving unpredictability in the world. They may be most prepared for life during, and after, coronavirus.

Voice of America - English: US Pledges Additional Foreign Aid to Battle COVID-19

The United States announced additional foreign assistance funding Thursday to help 64 at-risk countries battle the COVID-19 global pandemic while welcoming “continued, no-strings-attached” contributions from other nations.

"Today, I am pleased to announce that the United States has made available nearly $274 million in emergency health and humanitarian funding,” U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday in a statement.

The $274 million in foreign aid includes $100 million that was announced in early February, $110 million in new international disaster assistance, and $64 million in humanitarian assistance for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to assist in its pandemic response efforts for some of the world’s most vulnerable populations.

Homeless people are pictured at the

The funding will “support countries by providing protective services, water, sanitation and hygiene, food security, livelihood assistance, and humanitarian response coordination in order to mitigate the broader economic stabilization and security effects of the outbreak,” said USAID Deputy Administrator Bonnie Glick in a telephone briefing Thursday afternoon.

Among the 64 most vulnerable nations that are facing the threat of the deadly virus are Afghanistan, Angola, Indonesia, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kenya, South Africa, Tajikistan, the Philippines, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, Burma, Cambodia, Ethiopia, the Kyrgyz Republic, Laos, Mongolia, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Thailand and Vietnam, according to Glick.

The U.S. government’s new pledges in foreign assistance came as China is stepping up its outreach to nations that are particularly hit hard by the pandemic. Planeloads of Chinese medical supplies, doctors and quarantine specialists have begun landing in European capitals almost daily, with governments of the hardest-hit countries, including Italy and Spain, openly welcoming China's help.

On Wednesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping told German Chancellor Angela Merkel in a phone call that China is ready to share "experience on COVID-19 control and treatment" with Germany while cooperating on “the research and development of the vaccines.”

“The Chinese Communist Party has a special responsibility to provide no-strings-attached assistance around the world and take responsibility for what everyone realizes is the result of the cover-up that happened in Wuhan,” said James Richardson, who is USAID director of U.S. Foreign Assistance Resources.

The U.S. is the largest health and humanitarian donor in the world.

“The United States contributes close to 40 percent of the world’s global health assistance every year, nearly five times larger than the next donor, which is the UK, and 30 percent of the world’s humanitarian assistance,” Richardson said.

Thursday, the U.S. surpassed China and Italy to become the country with the highest number of confirmed coronavirus cases.

Senior American officials have expressed frustration at Beijing's unwillingness to cooperate and provide transparent information at the initial stage of the pandemic when it was still confined to China’s Hubei Province. The U.S. said China declined its offers of assistance.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - MARCH 26: People are seen wearing protective masks while smoking as the coronavirus continues to spread…
People smoke while they wear protective masks as the coronavirus continues to spread across the United States on March 26, 2020, in New York City.

Beijing was upset when the U.S. announced travel restrictions on people traveling from Hubei Province and China and was disturbed by Washington’s decision to evacuate the U.S. consulate in Wuhan.

“U.S.-China relations were on the decline long before the pandemic started. But it's really the mutual animosity that's only increased since the outbreak,” said Drew Thompson, a visiting senior research fellow at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore.

"The threats to embargo the export of medical equipment from China to the U.S., including protective gear, and the war of words between government officials about the national origins of the virus, indicates that we probably have not yet found the floor of the bilateral relationship, and tensions are probably going to continue and potentially even get worse," Thompson told VOA.
