Project Sunshine

In the 1950's, the United States ran testing with atomic bombs. Of course, these bombs affected people and the environment, but to what extent was unknown. A project was launched to figure this out, but finding test subjects was difficult. Despite knowing the legal ramifications, body snatching was employed to ensure the testing could be completed.

Rumour: Nintendo Is Bringing Some Of Mario's Most Obscure Adventures To Switch Online

Mama mia!

Following the report from a few days ago that Nintendo is planning to bring some major Mario titles to Switch this year to mark the character's 35th birthday, we've been given a bit more information from a source familiar with the matter which suggests Nintendo is casting its net even wider than originally expected.

Our source has told us that alongside the likes of Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario 3D World, Nintendo will be bringing some of the plumber's other '90s adventures to Nintendo Switch Online. These include the SNES outing Mario is Missing!, Mario's Time Machine and the Philips CD-i release Hotel Mario. It is also believed that Nintendo is working on a brand-new title which pulls in elements of all of these games, with the current working title New Super Mario Bros. is Missing! + Bowser's Minions HD Remix.

Making things in isolation

Well. I don’t want to dwell, but I can’t avoid the elephant in the room. This wasn’t — to put it simply — the 50th birthday I would have imagined only a few weeks ago. I’ve had Happy Birthday sung to me on a WhatsApp voice recording, lots of lovely messages and phone calls from friends and family, and I’ve had the fun of finishing sewing this chunk of riotous colour: a Granville shirt by Sewaholic.

I bought the fabric in Yogyakarta (in Indonesia) last summer on a work visit. I was immediately drawn to the vibrant colours and the pattern, but in retrospect I really needed to by 3 m of fabric, not 2 m. I therefore decided to turn necessity into a virtue and bought some plain turquoise fabric (matching the colour of one of the motifs) to use as contrast. Feeling confined and restricted, I wanted to go wild with colour, to make something bursting with life and vibrancy, so the plan came together.

I started the shirt last weekend, as the cutting took quite a long time. I cut on a single layer (rather than on folded fabric) to make my Indonesian fabric go as far as possible, but also to try to match the pattern between pieces as much as possible. Like a lot of Indonesian fabric, it has a border print along both selvedges, so I decided to place that along the button band on the front bodice, and do my best with the rest of the pattern motifs. I found that it worked well to cut one piece (say a side back panel) and then use that cut fabric as a pattern to cut the second piece, as you can then move the fabric around until you get a perfect match. It was an absorbing game of pattern Tetris, but in the end I managed to get all the pieces except the inner yoke, inner collar stand, inner cuffs, sleeve plackets and undercollar cut from the patterned fabric, with the remainder of the pieces in my contrast turquoise.

I finished off the sewing this weekend. I’ve had this pattern for a while, but while I’ve used the instructions to help me sew a self-drafted shirt, I haven’t actually made up the pattern until now. It fits me very well, except that the sleeves are perhaps a little long. The next time I make it I will try to remember to shorten the sleeve pieces by 3 or 4 cm.

Shirts are absorbing things to make, with some challenging techniques. The collar went pretty well this time, as did the cuffs, though one is neater than the other. I am very proud of my tower sleeve plackets though, as these are the neatest I have ever managed. Just as well really, as they are as subtle as neon lighting! I used Vilene sew-in interfacing for the collar, cuffs and button band for the first time (rather than iron-on/fusible interfacing), and I was really pleased with how well it turned out. I worried that the interfacing felt a bit too thick and plush and that it would be bulky, but it gives nice body to those parts and feels very soft and natural.

My only substantial error (and it was a classic) was that I managed to slice into the already sewn body of the shirt with a rotary cutter when trimming the seam allowance to flat fell the side seams. After a certain number of bad words, I fixed it by sewing a scrap of fabric on the inside to support the small tears, stabilising the area with Fray check (a kind of magic liquid glue for fabric), and then doing tiny zig-zag stitches over the tears to hold them. It is visible if you know where to look, but the busy pattern and the fact that it is under the arm saves it from being more obvious.

I’m really pleased with the finished shirt. If fits well, and it is a cheerful ray of sunshine in dark times, which is just what I intended. When we are finally able to go out and celebrate, I’m going to put it on like armour.

Nintendo is Making 3D Mario Remasters For His 35th Anniversary

The Super Mario series is turning 35 this year, and Nintendo has big plans for the plumber's birthday. From a report: That includes updating and bringing back most of his games for Nintendo Switch, according to a report from Video Games Chronicle. Eurogamer is backing up that report, and GamesBeat can as well. The core of the report is that Nintendo originally planned to focus on Mario's 35th anniversary at E3 (the Electronic Entertainment Expo) in Los Angeles in June. But organizers canceled that event due to the spread of the coronavirus. Nintendo is going ahead with that promotion, and it will likely hold a Direct-style event to provide all of the details. That includes info on remasters, a Paper Mario game, the upcoming Mario film, and Universal Studios' Super Nintendo World theme park. For the remasters, our source is telling us that Nintendo is pursuing something like a Super Mario All-Stars 2 for the 3D Mario games. This would include Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and then Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2.

The final week of my working life - in lockdown

Tim Pankhurst, chief executive of Seafood NZ and former leading newspaper editor, retires this week after 48 years in the workforce. He looks back on a final week like no other.

A week ago before the world changed we were fishing at dawn on the shore of the Rangaunu Harbour on the Karikari peninsula in the Far North.

As it became light we saw one other surfcaster beside a ute about 100 metres up the harbour.

Wandering up to see how he was getting on, he was anything but friendly.

“Have you got the virus?,” he demanded.

I laughed, thinking he was joking.

“I’m serious bro,” he said, backing away.

“I’ve got a 75-year-old mother and I need to protect her.”

“Mine’s 97,” was my inane reply before heading back to my companion to comment that the world was going mad.

That night, a well-connected friend in Wellington advised us to head home while we were still able.

That was Monday week ago, which saw us driving 1000 km in 13 hours on lightly trafficked State Highway 1. We listened on the way to the Prime Minister announcing a wartime footing, with a total lockdown at midnight in two days.

Normally bustling cafes were closing as we drove and one of the few options was McDonald’s in Taihape, our first such junk food in years. We had to admit it was surprisingly tasty but man, how much sugar do they put in those buns?

We had been a week at our idyllic hideaway at Rangiputa after spending a weekend at Womad with 17,000 others.

A couple of close friends had joined us on the Saturday, agonising over whether to fly from Wellington to Auckland and on to Kerikeri.

Now, 36 hours later all four of us were crammed in our car worriedly heading south.

There was so little space the obligatory pack of toilet rolls had to be broken down and stuffed into crannies. Every time we opened the door a dunny roll fell into the gutter.

There was just time for a late night shop for bread and milk at a near deserted Pak’nSave in Kilbirnie before the stored closed and it was back to work in the seafood industry on Tuesday.

Tim Pankhurst, in his element. Photo: Supplied

Seafood has been designated an essential industry but the message from Fisheries New Zealand, the Ministry for Primary Industries and the Government is “this is about saving lives, not businesses or jobs, so don’t stuff it up”.

Stringent measures have been put in place in factories – staggered shifts, fewer people on site, working distances strictly enforced, no stopping on the way to and from work, no shared transport, no vessel crew changeovers.

The safest place is on a deepsea trawler, one company head suggested.

New Zealand’s favourite takeaway – fish’n’chips – is off the menu but supermarkets are still being supplied with fresh fish. Exports are continuing although the live trade in rock lobsters, paua and oysters reliant on air freight has been hammered.

On a last trip into the office before the lockdown there is only one other car in the Mount Victoria tunnel. We toot, a fleeting connection.

In our neighbourhood the book exchange set up in the distinctive red former phone box by the pier is closed.

A printed message warns: STOP. Sorry folks but the book exchange feels a bit too much like a virus exchange space right now.

A promised Saturday morning opening to spread the books out in the sunshine for pick-ups only – no new deposits – is aborted by a cold, wet southerly.

There are lots of people walking, claiming the near deserted road as they skirt each other.

A large man marches down the white lines, loudly urging us in an American accent to keep safe and thanking us for respecting his space.

My frail mother, far senior to that of the man in the north, being well cared for in the Ryman Rita Angus village in Kilbirnie said she feels like a prisoner. Don’t we all. We’ll stand outside on the lawn and holler HOW ARE YOU?, we’d joked but we can’t even do that.

Our son has put his construction company staff on full pay for a month but will be stretched.

Our daughter in Melbourne is housebound, struggling with bronchitis and two young boys, her husband still not working from home. She marvels at the shambolic, confusing approach the Australians are taking, under playing the risk and being slow to respond.

That is down to an economy first approach, rather than this country’s prime concern for its citizens.

This week is my last before retirement, an end to 48 years’ fulltime work across media and the seafood sector. The functions have been cancelled but maybe we can raise a glass with colleagues via zoom and toast what has been.

This Covid19 virus, so sinister and unseen, drives a ghoulish daily toll.

We are all grappling with a new abnormal and these strange times are going to get a lot more challenging yet.

Tim Pankhurst, as Dominion Post editor, presenting at a parliamentary select committee with former Herald and now Newsroom co-editor Tim Murphy

Nintendo Megathread

Several sources are reporting that Nintendo is planning to release remasters of several old Mario games this year. Venturebeat claims that this will include Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Super Mario 3D World, which will have new levels added. I'd be well up for all of that.

Re: Cade Street Nursery Update

Hi all

I hope you're keeping safe and well in these challenging and strange times!

Just wanted to recommend Cade Street Nursery with their plant stall on North Cross Road and the nursery in Heathfield, East Sussex.

Now that we're into lock down for a while, the plant stall and nursery have temporarily closed and the Honeysett family are selling and delivering their wonderful plants online.

As a local gardening company who are very selective about our plant quality and stock, we can highly recommend Cade Street, who grow and produce wonderful, very high quality plants.

Have a look at:

Spring sunshine and the lock down make now a good time to get your gardens sorted out with new planting, mowing and weeding, whilst self isolation and working from home are taking over.

A lovely outdoor space to enjoy brings peace, calm & tranquility to all.

Happy planting :-).

Report: Nintendo to release several remastered Mario games this year

Nintendo is apparently going to celebrate the 35th anniversary of its most beloved character by releasing multiple Mario classics on the Switch, including Super Mario Sunshine, which hasn’t been available since the GameCube days. And it couldn’t come at a better time. Insiders apparently leaked the details to both Eurogamer and VGC. The games won’t just be released on the Switch — they’ll evidently be remastered as well. The games in question include not only the aforementioned Sunshine — which I can’t wait to play, as I never played the original — but Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy. Nintendo was reportedly going to…

Comment on Tuesday Forum: March 31, 2020 by Winston Smith

Old Ozzie:
In Sydney’s harbourside Rushcutters Bay Park, police cars with flashing lights dispersed people getting some fresh air and sunshine, in Perth, encouraged by Western Australian Premier Mark McGowan, police flew drones over parks warning people to go home. In Victoria and New South Wales the governments and police forces are warning of $10,000 fines for people who leave home for reasons not covered by prescriptive lists. In Queensland there are similar threats from police and Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk explained that now is “not the time for fun.” I don’t think anyone is having fun. But this police state tone is deeply worrying.
After this is over, no one will advance the theory "the police are on our side." The Police forces of Australia are showing us just whose side they are on - theirs.

Episode 091–Neil Fitzsimon On Getting the Best Drummers with Bruce Hilliard

( Drummer Woody Woodmansey's book as a Spider. Fitzsimon and Brogan are great, and okay, songwriter/guitar player and music aficionado Neil Fitzsimon is almost a co-host to the Better Each Day show. This episode features some talk about working with drummers Woody Woodmansey, best known for working with “David Bowie and Spiders from Mars”, and Pete Thomas, a member of both “The Attractions” with Elvis Costello and with Costello as a solo. ( Drummer Pete Thomas, top center. Neil Fitzsimon and Bee Brogan were both members of the band, “Pretty Blue Gun”, who were signed to an indie label licensed to Sony. They released two albums which were critically acclaimed. Some of the guest musicians included members of “The Art of Noise”, Dave Bronze (Eric Clapton’s bass player), Tobias Boshell (Moody Blues) and Pip Williams who played guitar on the Walker Brothers’ track, No Regrets. The albums were produced by Pat Collier, who produced Katrina and the Waves’ international hit, ‘Walking on Sunshine’. The band went on national tours across the UK until disbanding. Neil Fitzsimon, the songwriter, and Bee Brogan, the vocalist, then went on to form a songwriting/production partnership that led to placement of their songs in Film and TV. They also wrote a musical, Jack Dagger, which was showcased at the Greenwich Theatre, London for the Musical Futures Award. It was also showcased at the Bridewell and the Royal College of Music in London. They have also just had a song placed in a USA Sci Fi Feature film. They recently had a track reach number 3 in a French national download chart. All songs are written by Neil Fitzsimon. Vocals, keyboards, drums and engineering by Bee Brogan. Their influences range from The Beatles, Elvis Costello, Jimmy Webb, Jacques Brel and David Bowie. Their aim is to produce pure pop for now people. Fitzsimon and Brogan's Home Page (

Episode 058–Ray Dafrico “Tunnel Visions” with Bruce Hilliard

Ray Dafrico - A founding member of legendary Atlanta bands The Nightporters and later Kathleen Turner Overdrive. Guitarist, singer, songwriter Ray Dafrico has been playing original music professionally since April of 1981. He has toured, opened for or performed with artists such as The Clash, The Ramones, The Replacements, REM, Bo Diddley, Joan Jett, Weird Al Yankovic, Peter Tork and more. In the studio he has worked with Peter Buck (REM), Rob Fraboni (Bob Dylan, The Band Beach Boys), Brendan O'Brian (Bruce Springsteen) and Pierre De Beauport (The Rolling Stones). It sounds like a lifetime of chasing the rock and roll dream. "Well, I grew up in the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s, so I was exposed to a lot of power pop growing up and a lot funkier kind of music, plus early punk rock and new wave, so I just thought it was a fun term to use. I like songs with a lot of hooks, and my songs tend to have that quality too, so it just fits. What they call “pop” today is kind of like a negative thing. Pop is not the pop I knew. The Monkees, Beatles, Kinks, Stones, Ramones, Sex Pistols all had great pop songs. So did Sweet, Queen, KC and the Sunshine Band, Ohio Players, etc. I’ve always had a very wide variety of influences, lol." A warm summer day, a call to Ray and a lawn mower. All components of one of the best interviews to date.
