Colorado: Things Could Be Worse

Cache

This doesn't feel right!

WE SHOULD BE TOASTING OUR BUNS IN HAWAII.  Instead we’re sitting on our butts in a hotel in Colorado where it snowed on Friday.  But things could be worse . . . and they probably will be before they get better.

bb

We were supposed to be in Hawaii

Tim and Candice graciously agreed to accept our mail which had been collecting in South Dakota since October.  They wouldn’t exactly hand it to us — Candice after all is an MD and has an additional PhD in infectious diseases — but she did talk to Connie through the door.  Anyway, now we have enough medication to get us into 2021.

Candice also gave us some cloth masks to wear.  I am not convinced that they filter out the little buggers but, like lapel pins and bumper stickers, it shows that you are aware of the issue.  They have the additional benefit of concealing your identity when you go to Walmart.

                           The unknown shopper, Walmart

We’ve become comfortable in our hotel room but are looking forward to Wednesday when we move into our rented apartment.  This is our second try on AirB&B and we hope it goes better than the one in Hawaii did.  Besides the extra room we are excited about having an actual stove with an oven.  There is a limit to what you can cook on a 2-burner stove and I have pretty much exhausted my old camping recipes.  Now we, too, will have to queue up for toilet paper.

I am an admitted Luddite when it comes to technology.  I still don’t have a mobile phone and I refuse to text.  Even so, I joined in a teleconference with five friends from high school on Zoom yesterday.  IMHO the video component was pretty much wasted — none of us have aged all that well — but I enjoyed Betty and Debbie’s cameo appearances.  I’m happy to report that we are all weathering the storm, each in his own way, but I think I will skip any further “e-reunions.”  I would rather talk one-on-one without the video or send an email.  Old dogs, new tricks and all that.

Wed, 04/08/2020

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas’ Department of Theatre & Dance has announced the following students earned awards and recognition from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, Region V. Almost all of the work stemmed from KU’s University Theatre productions.

Additionally, Hunsucker earned KCACTF’s Student’s Choice Award, and representatives in attendance from the Stagecraft Institute of Las Vegas awarded her a one-week, tuition-paid internship.

Kayleigh Shaffer, senior in theatre design from Olathe
First place National Sound Design for KU’s production of “The Wolves” (fall 2019)

Shaffer has represented KU at nationals in sound design since her sophomore year (“Metamorphoses,” 2017; “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,” 2018).

Kate Smeltzer, third-year MFA student from Prairie Village
First place in National Scenic Design for “In the Blood”
Honorable mention in National Costume Design for “In the Blood”

Lexey Jost, third-year MFA student from Hutchinson
Second place in National Scenic Design for “The Christians” (fall 2019)

OTHER HONORS:

Stagecraft Institute Internship

Erick Carranza, senior in theatre design from Garden City
It marks three consecutive years KU theatre students presenting at the KCACTF competition have been tapped for the internship opportunity, an intensive theatre studies opportunity in Las Vegas.

Regional Award

John Rohr, first-year MFA student, from Arkansas City
First place Regional Scenic design for “Barefoot in the Park,” an academic project

One faculty member and the following students earned certificates of merit from the KCACTF Region V judge who attended and responded to the University Theatre productions.

Commendations

Rana Esfandiary, assistant professor of scenography, costume design, “Sycorax” (spring 2019)

Timmia Hearn Feldman, graduate student, progressive direction, “In the Blood”

Hollyanna Mathews, senior in theatre performance from Bentonville, Arkansas, stage direction, “The Christians”

Harlan Shoemaker, senior in visual arts and theatre design from Tonganoxie, makeup design, “Sycorax”

Jost and Smeltzer also received commendations for scenic designs for “The Christians” and “In the Blood,” respectively.

“This is the second year in a row where several theatre design students fared so well at the KCACTF conference. It gives our students a chance to meet fellow student designers, look at other designers’ work, attend workshops and present their research and designs while conferring with professionals,” said Kelly Vogel, academic associate/resident artist in the department. “The level of competition is impressive, and through the experience of showing their work to professional artists and peers in the region, they learn to detach the emotion from their work and enhance their communication and critical thinking skills.”

"We would not be able to attend this festival without the support of Friends of the Theatre, the support organization for the University Theatre. We are grateful for our Friends’ dedication and passion for theatre students,” Vogel added.

Hunsucker, Shaffer and Smeltzer were invited to compete at the National KCACTF conference in Washington D.C., which was slated to begin April 6 before being canceled over COVID-19 concerns. The KCACTF-Region V annual conference and awards took place January 2020 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Region V includes Kansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota. At various times during 2019, representatives of KCACTF came to Lawrence to judge the submitted plays and provide critiques.

Fundamentals of Non-Destructive Assay for International Safeguards
Event type
wgeist@lanl.gov Fri, 04/03/2020
Event topics
-
Location
Los Alamos, NM

Dates: August 3-7, 2020

Description: This course is an introduction to non-destructive assay (NDA) measurement techniques that may be used for nuclear material accountancy by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) or within a State’s System of Accounting and Control (SSAC). The course is designed to teach students the fundamentals of gamma-ray detection and provide an introduction to neutron detection. The course will explore the application of NDA measurements techniques typically used for international safeguards. Students will also receive a refresher on the nuclear fuel cycle and learn about the basics of nuclear material accountancy, including IAEA sampling plans and material balance evaluations.

The course will comprise general safeguards presentations and detailed training on specific NDA measurement techniques. A number of hands on laboratory exercises will be featured using Los Alamos National Laboratory’s training facility and leveraging the exemplary expertise and resources that are also used to instruct IAEA inspectors in NDA principles each year. This course will allow participants a unique opportunity to perform NDA measurements using assay systems—such as sodium iodide systems, high-purity germanium detectors, and a variety of neutron-based detectors—on a variety of relevant nuclear materials. The course will conclude with discussion of good practices and the appropriate application of NDA measurements to meet a State’s international safeguards needs.

Who Should Apply: Preference will be given to individuals who have responsibilities within an SSAC. This course is primarily designed for safeguards practitioners who have responsibly in a states with fuel cycle facilities that may include nuclear power plants, research reactors, or fuel fabrication facilities.  The course will specifically focus on uranium based NDA measurement techniques typically used in countries with these types of facilities.  The course will be taught in English, so candidates should be proficient in written and spoken English. Individuals should also have a basic understanding of the physics of nuclear radiation.

How to Apply: To apply for this course, please visit https://God.blue/forward.php?url=https://nonproliferationportal.com. The application link, as well as other course information, is located at the bottom of the homepage. Please note that you do not need to register for access to the nonproliferation portal in order to complete and submit the application. Applicants will be selected and notified of their acceptance to the course by email.

Tuition: U.S. Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration’s International Nuclear Safeguards Engagement Program will sponsor the cost for travel and participation in the course for certain countries. There are no tuition fees and all course materials and local transportation will be provided.
