Gesù scoppiò in pianto.

Chi crede in me non morrà in eterno” (vv. 25-26).

Hope in Trying Times - Our Recent Wins for a Healthy Climate

A new year and a new decade are upon us, and already 2020 has brought a huge set of changes and challenges for our communities. A global pandemic has starkly revealed the many ways in which we are failing to care for the health and well-being of our poor and working class, unhoused neighbors, immigrant communities, and other vulnerable people. Oregon’s already short legislative session was cut even shorter by Republican walkouts, making it impossible to pass critical new laws. Yet despite these challenges, we see people coming together to take care of each other, bringing supplies and mutual aid to one another, and all the while still tackling climate change as the broad-scale public health crisis that it remains.

Since 1986, the Covanta Marion waste incinerator (pictured above behind a nearby childcare facility) has been polluting Marion County just east of I-5 and north of Salem. Municipal garbage from the County, as well as medical waste imported from other states, are fed into the incinerator, producing highly toxic air emissions and ash. In fact, the facility is so toxic that it was singled out by the Cleaner Air Oregon program as a top priority for increased scrutiny out of hundreds of facilities statewide.

Islamic Prayers Said in Hagia Sophia

Cache
I have blogged multiple times about a contradiction in Muslim attitude toward Jewish prayer at the Temple Mount.

The Islamic Waqf authority emphatically denies Jews the right of freedom of worship at the location of the Two Temples, Judaism`s most sacred site. Yet at the same time, they act to pray at the Cordoba Cathedral in Spain and the Hagia Sophia in Turkey.

In other words, churches that became mosques due to Muslim conquest, must be at the disposal of Muslims as mosques even though they have been returned to their normal state.

But a Jewish holy site that was turned into a mosque must not be allowed to revert to a Jewish synaggoue even thought the Jews returned that site to Jewish authority.

The news?

Turkey Uses Hagia Sophia as Mosque for Islamic Prayer AgainBy Philip Chrysopoulos
The Islamic call to prayer was heard in what was once the center of Orthodoxy, Hagia Sophia, on Monday, as a video calling the former Byzantine cathedral “Hagia Sophia Mosque” on Youtube shows...This is the third year in a row that similar acts challenging the supposed status of Hagia Sophia as a secular museum have taken place in March.
...Hagia Sophia was built in 537 and served for nearly a thousand years as the cathedral of the Byzantine Empire, later to become the Greek Orthodox Christian Patriarchal Cathedral. It was converted to an Ottoman mosque on May 29, 1453, just after the fall of Constantinople, and it remained a mosque until 1931. Four years later, the iconic Byzantine basilica, once the very symbolof Greek Orthodoxy, began operating as a museum, after a decision by the first Turkish President and founder of the Republic of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

...The use of the museum as a place of worship since 1931 has been strictly prohibited. However, in 2006 the Turkish government allowed the allocation of a small room in the museum complex to be used as a prayer room for Christian and Muslim museum staff, and since 2013 the muezzin singsthe call to prayer twice per day, in the afternoon from the minarets of the museum.

...In May of 2017 the Anatolia Youth Association (AGD) organized a gathering in front of Hagia Sophia for morning prayers and called for the re-conversion of the museum into a mosque...On March 31, 2018 Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan recited the first verse of the Quran in Hagia Sophia, dedicating the prayer to the “souls of all who left us this work as inheritance, especiallyIstanbul’s conqueror,” reiterating his position to make Hagia Sophia a mosque once again.

In March 2019 Erdogan said that he will change the status of Hagia Sophia from a museum to a mosque...

The Irgun and MP John Platts-Mills

Cache
Moshe Phillips drew my attention to this item which appeared recently in the Camden Journal:
A READER’S email from Mireille Burton about a famous barrister, John Platts-Mills, sent me diving backwards into my memory – and the very first public meeting I attended in my life as a 16-year-old in Manchester.

It was a protest against the government’s policy in 1947 to hunt down the Jewish independence movement in Palestine led by a group called Irgun Zwei Leumi proscribed by Britain as “terrorists”.

On the platform in the small hall were two main speakers – a fiery Methodist minister, Amphlett Micklewright, who would bend at the knee and cry “Chuck it Bevin”, a sharp reference to the foreign minister Ernest Bevin; and the tall, elegant, handsome Labour MP John Platts-Mills, member for Finsbury, who also attacked Bevin and the prime minister, Clement Attlee.

That night John Platts-Mills became my hero.
As for Micklewright, his memoir is here. He was an Anglican from 1935 then Unitarian in 1941, rejoined the Church of England in 1949 and became Roman Catholic Church in 1974. He has been described as a liberal and a humanist.

Platts-Mills

is another story.

He was what I would call a hard-left politician from this obituary. Even pro-Soviet according to this
he was a member of the Society for Cultural Relations with the USSR (SCR), a Labour party proscribed organisation. He also had close links with members of the International Brigade, the People's Convention and the Popular Front movement. It is possible that, during their association in the latter campaign, Cripps learned of his sympathies. Platts-Mills had also enlisted to fight in Spain, but was refused because he was married with a child. Equally he had been prominent during the 1930s in prosecuting cases against fascists and defending their Communist opponents following street fights, activities that had brought him to the attention of the League of Socialist Lawyers.
It seems his motivation to speak out on behalf of the Irgun was less a full understanding of what the Irgun was fighting for but more on viewing Bevin as bigoted, anti Semitic, and  horrible and Platts-Mills fundamental desire to end British colonialism.

He was also involved in a number of international inquiry committees including the  International Commission of Inquiry into Israeli Crimes Against the Lebanese and Palestinian Peoples in the 1980s.

In 1947, he displayed a general concern for anyone, including Arabs, who were being simply unfairly treated as this snippet on an incident of impounded documents discussed in the House of Commons on May 23, 1947 (vol 437 cc306-7W306W)
Mr. Platts-Mills asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware that on Sunday, 27th April, 1947, officers of the Palestine police force searched the baggage of Mr. Emile G. Thouma, a Palestinian citizen returning from Great Britain, where he had been attending a conference; that his papers, comprising notes on the labour, trade union and progressive movements in Britain, were impounded for censorship; that those papers are still retained at C.I.D. head-quarters, Jerusalem, in spite of protests; and if he will issue instructions for the release of those papers.

Mr. Creech Jones: The documents found in the baggage of Mr. Emile Thouma on his return to Palestine on 27th April were impounded by the Palestine Police and sent to Jerusalem for examination. After examination they were sent to the police station in Haifa, where Mr. Thouma resides, and were available for him to collect from 8th May. In spite of several requests, Mr. Thouma has so far neither called for the documents, nor has he made any protests concerning them to the Palestine Government.
Touma by the way

was a lifelong Communist, a leading member of the Palestine Communist Party.

The intervention of Platts-Mills on behalf of Touma is so much similar to what goes on today by EU and American politicians, with a false and misplaced sense of idealism, as well as various NGOs in favor of pro-Arab activity here in Israel.

Homily - 22 March 2020 - The Fourth Sunday of Lent

The Fourth Sunday of Lent(A)

Dear brothers and sisters,

Almost like a punch to the gut, on this Fourth Sunday of Lent Mother Church tells us to “rejoice, Jerusalem, and all who love her. Be joyful, all you were in mourning” (Isaiah 66:10-11). These words strike us so painfully because we are now in mourning, mourning over the fact that we cannot now gather at the Lord’s altar.

Saint Paul advises us today to “try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord” (Ephesians 5:10). The ancient Greek playwright and philosopher Aeschylus gave us this proverb: πάθος μάθος (pathos mathos), which means both “learning is suffering” and “suffering is learning.[1] Any student who has struggled to understand a difficult lesson knows this all too well. Mourning is always a form of suffering and so we might well ask ourselves now what the Lord might be trying to teach us. In what way might the works of God be made visible through our present situation (cf. John 9:3)?

As a student of history, I know that there are always important lessons to learn by looking to those who have gone before us, especially those who have gone before us in faith. In the midst of these strange days, some have attempted to look to the past by loosely comparing us to the ancient Christians who also had difficulty gathering for the Sunday Mass. The analogy, of course, only goes so far and, like all analogies, the similarity is less than the dissimilarity.

In the year 304, “the Emperor Diocletian forbade Christians, on pain of death, from possessing the Scriptures, from gathering on Sundays to celebrate the Eucharist and from building places in which to hold their assemblies.”[2] Today we can understand a small portion of what they endured, but whereas they still gathered under the threat of death, we have more or less voluntarily agreed to stay home for the well-being of all.

In the midst of those days of persecution, 49 Christians in the city of Abitene - in modern day Tunisia - were taken by surprise during the Sunday Mass. Because they were in violation of imperial law, they were brought before the Proconsul Anulinus in Carthage for interrogation. When asked why they disobeyed the Emperor’s command, those 49 Christians answered, Sine dominico non possumus, “that is, we cannot live without joining together on Sunday to celebrate the Eucharist. We would lack the strength to face our daily problems and not to succumb.”[3]

While they were tortured and killed for their faith in Christ, we now struggle to find a way to live without the Sunday Mass so that we, too, might face our daily problems and not succumb to the temptations of the Evil One. In a manner of speaking, we are learning what the earliest believers knew and held dear:

The Sunday precept is not … an externally imposed duty, a burden on our shoulders. On the contrary, taking part in the Celebration, being nourished by the Eucharistic Bread and experiencing the communion of their brothers and sisters in Christ is a need for Christians, it is a joy; Christians can thus replenish the energy they need to continue on the journey we must make every week.[4]

Those ancient martyrs may well be teaching us what the Lord wants us to learn at this moment in history by showing us what is pleasing to the Lord: the members of the Body of Christ gathering together for the Sunday Mass and for the fellowship of their brothers and sisters.

Many of us have already begun to realize that we sometimes take the Mass for granted. We too often let other things, such as sports or vacations, take precedence over the Mass. At the same time, many of us have also begun to realize that we sometimes take our parish family for granted. We too often let other things, such as meals, dinners, or parties, determine where and when we go to Mass, rather than making it a priority to gather with our parish.

As these two realizations take greater hold in our hearts, our mourning increases; we mourn doubly. We not only mourn because we cannot now gather together, we mourn also because we have taken for granted so much of what is essential for our true life. Yet still Mother Church tells us to rejoice. With Saint Paul, she says to us, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light” (Ephesians 5:14). In these days of our suffering, let us learn well these lessons from the ancient martyrs and so awaken from our spiritual slumber.

This brings me to one of my favorite lines in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings: “The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.”[5]In the midst of our grief, our love for the Eucharist and for the community of the Body of Christ can indeed grow the greater. Then, when at last the trouble of these days has past, we will gather again at the altar of the Lord and say to one another, “Be joyful, all you who were in mourning.” Amen.

What I’m Thinking: Clear Message

Cache
Matthew’s account of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem has a curious feature: Jesus rode on two animals. It’s because Matthew wanted to make sure we understand who Jesus is. Here’s a transcript: I’m pleased that we’ll be welcoming a guest to bring the message to Church of the Holy Cross this coming Sunday. The Rev. […]

To the Ends of Our Hearts

Cache
Acts 1:8, ESV
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.

The verse today spoken by Jesus to His disciples before He ascended back to heaven was a promise to them that they would begin to fulfil the Great Commission He entrusted to them at the end of Matthew’s Gospel, carrying the good news of the gospel to the ends of the earth in the power of the Holy Spirit. We live in days when that message is now being broadcast to all the earth by satellite, and where missionaries and translators still risk their lives to take its good news to remote and previously unreached people groups. Each of us too are bearers of that message in the places where we live or work.

It’s often struck me that, just as the gospel message needs to go out to all the ends of the earth, it also needs to reach the deepest hidden places of our hearts. Our hearts also need to be evangelised. Sometimes it seems as if there are parts of our lives and past still in darkness and shadows. These parts have not yet truly received and been touched by the good news of the gospel we seek to share with others. We are born again, but, like the unconquered areas of the Promised Land after the Israelites crossed the Jordan River, there are still strongholds of shame and guilt which have not come under the power of the forgiveness purchased for us by Jesus on the cross. Chains of bondage and fear are yet to be broken by the power of His shed blood.

It’s easy to look at how much still needs to change in our lives before we meet Jesus, but, just as we have confidence in His promise that His gospel will reach the farthest ends of the earth, the Apostle Paul and the writer of Hebrews encourage us that the same Good News will reach the ends of our hearts too.

‘Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; He will surely do it’ (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24).

‘… I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ’ (Philippians 1:6).

‘Consequently, He (Jesus) is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them’ (Hebrews 7:25).

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for all that You did on the cross to save me. Lord, I long for the power and truth of Your gospel to continue to reach and transform every part of my heart and, as You work in me, please use me to share that good news with others so they can know You too. In Your name I pray, Amen.

A Lesson from Hezekiah

Cache
Isaiah 37:14, NI
Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it. Then he went up to the temple of the Lord and spread it out before the Lord.

Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, sent word to Hezekiah, the king of Judah, of his intent to overthrow and capture Jerusalem. Isaiah 36 gives a detailed account of the threats he used to intimidate and bring fear to Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem. He even went as far as questioning Hezekiah’s confidence in the Lord and ridiculed the living God. Up to this point, Sennacherib had attacked all the fortified cities of Judah and captured them (Isaiah 36:11). He also blamed Hezekiah for misleading the people and tried to put doubt into their hearts.

In the light of these serious threats, Hezekiah tore his clothes and went into the temple of the Lord. He sent word to the prophet Isaiah and asked for help. Hezekiah’s officials came back with word from the Lord, “This is what the Lord says: Do not be afraid of what you have heard” (Isaiah 37:6).

When Sennacherib sent Hezekiah another message to threaten him, Hezekiah took the letter and spread it out before the Lord, as we read in today’s verse. He acknowledged the truth in the message that the Assyrian king had laid waste to peoples and their lands, but he then asked the Lord to deliver them from the enemy “so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You, Lord, are the only God” (Isaiah 37:20). The rest of Chapter 37 is wonderful to read and is about how the Lord responded and brought an end to Sennacherib’s terror. Everything Sennacherib had believed to be his own doing had in fact been ordained by God (verse 26).

This brings me to today and the threats we are all facing - every accusation, all the uncertainties and every form of fear the enemy is using in an attempt to weaken and deceive us into thinking we are heading for disaster. He uses partial truths and tries to convince us that we aren’t strong enough. But our confidence is in the Lord, not in ourselves! The Lord answered Hezekiah in Isaiah 37:21 with His promise of deliverance, ‘Because you have prayed to Me …’. This is our strength, and this is the truth we need to stand in the face of the storms and threats in our lives.

Let us turn to the Lord in humility and spread our concerns and fears before Him. He is able and willing to deliver us.

Prayer: Father, we are facing so many threats at the moment. Let us, as Your people, unite in prayer and not in fear. We come before You, Lord, and spread out all our fears and concerns - our loved ones, our physical health, our finances and … (mention whatever comes to mind). Lord, deliver us so all the nations of the earth may know that You, Lord, are the only God. Amen.
