Stones livestream player Mike Postle accused of "live superusing"

Cache
Really interesting story, and in fact would be a case of life imitating art, if true. On December 5, 2005, during the peak of the poker boom, the fictional drama TV show "Las Vegas" aired an episode about an amateur female poker player winning a poker tournament by seemingly making impossibly good reads. It turned out that the woman was in cahoots with someone on the staff which televised the final table, and gave her a signal whenever her opponent didn't really have a hand. This gave her the ability to put a ton of pressure on opponents and always get them to fold when weak. In the story, Howard Lederer (playing himself) helped analyze the play and stated that it was just too good to be true, which led to the heroes cracking the scheme and busting both conspirators. Of course, this was all fiction. To my knowledge, this has never occurred in real life. Despite the danger of televised events possibly allowing for cheating, I haven't heard of any verified (or even credibly accused) instances of it actually occurring. Until now. Mike Postle is a mostly-unknown player. He has racked up a lot of tournament cashes over the years, adding up to over $500k. However, no cash was over $118k, and most of the tournaments he's entered in the last few years have been low stakes. Image: https://God.blue/forward.php?url=https://media.cardplayer.com/assets/photos/000/011/769/large_080122124254500.jpg He's recently been playing on the Stones Live stream, which is similar to Live at the Bike. Stones is located in the Sacramento area. Two years ago, I appeared on the stream, playing 100-200 limit holdem. An issue was recently raised by Stones sometimes-commentator/sometimes-player Veronica, aka "Angry Polak". Veronica was born in Poland but has spent most of her time in the US. She's 42 years old, but looks good for her age. Image: https://God.blue/forward.php?url=https://i.ytimg.com/vi/i13uMR1Xrkw/maxresdefault.jpg That's actually not even a good picture of her. I saw her two years ago in person and she looked very good, though not quite as good as her super-filtered pics on her Twitter. But I digress. Veronica recently raised an issue on Twitter about Mike Postle's crushing of Stones Live, where he seemingly picks off all bluffs and just soul reads everyone. Here's a compilation of hands: https://God.blue/forward.php?url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pH8Fjro2oJs Here's another one, though this is one of the rare times it didn't work out for Postle, as a fish with A9o couldn't let go of his A9 high for a ton of money! https://God.blue/forward.php?url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BATKzg3Wu0I Here are Veronica's tweets about it: 1178014854205935616 1178014856793845762 1178014858475794432 1178014860652662784 Stones gave this response: 1178372709144645632 They were not clear what this "investigation" entailed. Mike Postle has not been known to be a particularly tough or soul-reading player outside of the Stones Live stream. There is some legitimate fear that he has someone on the inside signaling him in some way when his opponent does or doesn't have a hand. Here's his Twitter, where he denies it: https://God.blue/forward.php?url=https://twitter.com/Mike_Postle I have an idea... why doesn't he come down to play at Live at the Bike instead, and we can see if he has the same abilities?

California Regulators Approve New Fracking Permits During COVID-19 Epidemic

Body

By Dan Bacher, SF INDY BAY MEDIA

April 4, 2020

https://God.blue/forward.php?url=https://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2020/04/04/18832107.php

The increase in oil and gas drilling permits in recent years, including fracking operations — and fact that California has no health and safety setbacks like many other states do — is a result of the millions of dollars every year that WSPA and oil companies spend every year on lobbying state officials, including the Governor’s Office and state regulatory agencies, as well as the many millions spent by the oil industry on campaign contributions to politicians and campaign committees.

In the midst of the COVID-19 Pandemic and after a nine-month moratorium on new fracking operations, the State Department of Conservation on Friday approved 24 new fracking permits in Kern County, the center of the oil industry in California.

Public health advocates and environmental justice advocates were very disappointed by the approval of environmentally destructive fracking operations as coronavirus infections, hospitalizations and deaths increase daily, although less than in other states due to Governor Gavin Newsom’s stay-at-home order and other emergency measures.

California regulators on Friday issued the fracking permits to Aera Energy after saying that federal scientists had green lighted the new fracking operations.

“Another 282 applications remain on hold pending individual review, until a comprehensive audit of the state's drill permitting practices is completed,” reported Janet Wilson of the Desert Sun: https://God.blue/forward.php?url=http://www.desertsun.com/

"Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory experts are continuing evaluation on a permit-by-permit basis and conducting a rigorous technical review to verify geological claims made by well operators in the application process," Teresa Schilling, spokeswoman for the California Geologic Energy Management division (CalGEM) told Wilson. "Permit-by-permit review will continue until the Department of Finance Audit is complete later this year."

In July 2019, Governor Newsom fired the state’s head oil and gas supervisor a day after Consumer Watchdog and the FracTracker Alliance, Wilson and this reporter revealed that the number of fracking permits issued from January to June had doubled under Newsom from those issued under Governor Jerry Brown during the same period — and exposed a number of financial conflicts of interests held by state regulators. Newsom claimed he was unaware of the fracking expansion.

According to the document released on Friday, “In November, CalGEM requested a third-party scientific review of pending well stimulation permit applications to ensure the state’s technical standards for public health, safety and environmental protection are met prior to approval of each permit. To ensure the proposed permits comply with California law, including the state’s technical standards to protect public health, safety, and environmental protection, the Department of Conservation asked experts at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) to assess CalGEM’s permit review process. LLNL also evaluated the completeness of operators’ application materials and CalGEM’s engineering and geologic analyses.”

The Well Stimulation National Laboratory Scientific Review document is available at https://God.blue/forward.php?url=http://www.conservation.ca.gov/

However, fracking opponents strongly condemned the approval of new fracking permits at a time that the state is shut down and people are dying everyday from the COVID-19 virus.

In a statement, Food & Water Action California Director Alexandra Nagy blasted Newsom in response to the approval of new fracking operations during a pandemic.

“By allowing a sudden return to fracking in the state, Governor Newsom has shown his true oily colors,” said Nagy. “Despite his pledges to ban fracking and bring California into a clean energy future, Newsom has quietly fallen into line with the corporate fossil fuel interests that have been polluting this state’s air and water for decades.”

“Newsom's actions show disregard for the deepening health and climate crisis facing all Californians. We had hoped for better from Newsom, but now we know exactly what we’re dealing with. We’re putting the governor on notice: We will be fighting his pro-polluter agenda vigorously at every turn,” she concluded

"With the entire state shut down and kids out of school, what purpose could approving these fracking permits have now, other than to do a solid for the oil industry when no one is watching? This is like a Pearl Harbor attack for the environment," Jamie Court, executive director of Consumer Watchdog, told the Desert Sun.

In a tweet, Consumer Watchdog appealed to Newsom to stop the fracking expansion.

“#COVID19 targets communities with respiratory illnesses from air pollution. Yet, @CalConservation issued 24 #fracking permits—the 1st permits issued after 6 months of moratorium on fracking—to allow the oil industry to continue polluting. @GavinNewsom, we need you to step in.”

Number of new oil and gas permits approved under Newsom rivals those issued under Jerry Brown

The issuing of new fracking permits Friday took place less than two months after Consumer Watchdog and the FracTracker Alliance reported that the total number of oil and gas well permits issued in 2019 under the Newsom Administration rivals the number issued during the last year in office of former Governor Jerry Brown,

The Newsom Administration issued just 1% fewer permits for a total of 4,545 in 2019 versus 4,590 for all of 2018, according to the groups.

“The numbers give fresh urgency on the need to order a 2,500-foot health barrier between oil industry operations and people living as close as just yards away,” Consumer Watchdog and FracTracker Alliance wrote in a letter to Governor Newsom on the eve of his state of the state address. “Action on this and a start to phasing out oil and gas production in the state simply cannot wait for the results of more time-consuming studies.”

Read the letter to Newsom here.

It is no surprise that the 4,545 permits were issued in a year where oil industry organizations again dominated lobbying spending in California.

The Western States Petroleum Association (WSPA), the largest and most powerful corporate lobbying group in California, placed first in the annual lobbying “competition” in California in 2019 with $8.8 million spent on influencing the Governor’s office, legislators and other state officials, a position it captures most years.

The San Ramon-based Chevron spent the third most money on lobbying in California last year, spending a total of $5.9 million.

When you add the $8.8 million from WSPA and the $5.9 million from Chevron, that comes to a total of $14.7 million spent of lobbying between the two oil industry giants alone.

Website tracks oil and gas well permits

The oil and gas well permit numbers and locations issued by the Newsom administration amidst heavy lobbying by WSPA and Chevron are posted and updated on a interactive map at the website NewsomWellWatch.com.

FracTracker and Consumer Watchdog said they launched the website in 2019 to regularly track and update the number of oil and gas wells permitted by the Newsom Administration.

The Geologic Energy Management Division (formerly the Department of Conservation’s Division of Oil, Gas and Geothermal Resources) issues two main categories of permits: permits to drill new oil and gas wells and permits to rework existing wells. Permits are issued for different types of wells, including “Enhanced Oil Recovery Wells” (EOR) that use steam and water flooding and cyclic steaming to dislodge oil, according to the groups.

“Last year, permits for new wells rose 4.9% over 2018 while permits to rework existing wells fell 6.5%. The numbers suggest that the oil industry is seeking to drill as many new wells as possible just as many old wells fail to produce enough oil to be profitable. The total number of permits issued came in at just 1% less than the total in 2018,” the groups said.

The number of fracking permits fell 5.4% over 2018 to 211 permits issued in 2019 after Consumer Watchdog and Fractracker Alliance revealed last July a doubling of fracking permits in the first five months of 2019. Newsom immediately called for a moratorium on fracking and high-pressure cyclic steaming permits for the rest of the year, the groups stated.

“Permits for wells within 2,500 feet of homes, hospitals, daycares, or nursing facilities made up 12.2% of permits issued in 2019, a bad sign for public health. Proximity to oil and gas drilling has been shown to increase the risks of cancer, congenital disorders, asthma and other health impacts while new wells will contribute to climate change worldwide,” the groups said.

According to FracTracker Alliance, permits for new cyclic steaming and steam injection wells—dangerous and dirty techniques to access hard-to-reach crude oil—rose 23.5% over 2018, from 1,077 to 1,330. While Newsom temporarily suspended high-pressure cyclic steaming, which can break rock formations, most cyclic steam in California is done under lower pressures.

However, the groups said “all steam injection operations are risky because steaming at lower pressures still causes spills and sinkholes. Injection wells can destabilize other nearby wells and lead to casing failures and blowouts. These permits have additional repercussions for climate change because large amounts of natural gas are burned to create the steam used to loosen oil.”

“Since Newsom announced his moratorium on high pressure cyclic steaming in November 2019, CalGem has permitted 63 new cyclic steam wells, 9 in the Cymric Field where Chevron’s cyclic steam wells caused an 80,000-gallon spill and surface expressions continue, according to FracTracker’s crunching of state data,” the groups said.

As of last July, Consumer Watchdog and FracTracker revealed that 2019 permits for new production wells had risen by 7% over the first six months of 2018 and that fracking permits had doubled.

“That is when Governor Newsom took steps to rein in and review permit approvals. He also fired the top oil regulator and instituted an ethics review after the groups disclosed that top oil regulators held stock in companies that they regulate,” the groups concluded.

The two groups are hopeful that Newsom will support the creation of a 2500 foot foot health setback between oil and gas wells and homes, schools, hospitals and other facilities.

“Newsom hasn't taken oil money for his gubernatorial campaign,” said Liza Tucker, consumer advocate for Consumer Watchdog. “He’s not beholden to the oil industry financially. We applaud what he has done to date; he has taken some very encouraging actions. He's begun to house clean the oil regulation division of the Department of Conservation.”

“We’re at a turning point and this is a golden opportunity to institute a 2500 foot setback between oil industry operations and people. That would be an excellent first step to begin to phase out and gas production in California,” concluded Tucker.

Under pressure from Big Oil, California still doesn’t have health and health and safety setbacks

In addition to pressuring California officials to continue to oil and gas drilling expansion in California, the money spent on lobbying by WSPA, Chevron and other oil companies was successful in preventing the Legislature from approving Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi’s AB 345, a bill to ensure that new oil and gas wells not on federal land are located 2,500 feet away from homes, schools, hospitals, playgrounds and health clinics,

Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez made it into a two-old bill after pulling the bill from the Assembly Appropriations Committee that she chairs on May 16.

According to state campaign finance data unveiled by investigative journalist Steve Horn for the Real News, Gonzalez has received campaign money throughout her career from Tesoro ($13,000) ExxonMobil ($3,500) CA Independent Petroleum Association ($7,000), Chevron ($11,300), CA Building Industry Association ($10,300), and State Building and Construction Trades Council of California PAC ($34,300). For more information, read: Why Did the California Assembly Table Oil Setbacks Bill? therealnews.com/...

Unlike many other oil and gas producing states including Texas, Colorado and Pennsylvania, supposedly “green” California currently has no health and safety zones around oil and gas drilling operations.

For example, the state of Texas requires the fracking operations maintain 250 foot setbacks from homes, schools and other facilities while the City of Dallas mandates 1500 foot setbacks around oil and gas wells.

However, despite the flurry of oil industry spending on AB 345 and other bills last year, the bill made considerable progress this year in the Legislature before they went into recess because of the COVID-19 Pandemic, passing the Assembly Floor by a vote 42 to 30 on January 27: https://God.blue/forward.php?url=http://www.dailykos.com/

AB 345 is now in the Senate. The bill has been read for the first time and has gone on to the Committee on Revenue & Taxation (RLS) for assignment.

Background: Big Oil Regulatory Capture in California

The increase in oil and gas drilling permits in recent years — and fact that California has no health and safety setbacks like many other states do — is a result of the millions of dollars every year that WSPA and oil companies spend every year on lobbying state officials, including the Governor’s Office and state regulatory agencies, as well as the many millions spent by the oil industry on campaign contributions to politicians and campaign committees.

Both the Jerry Brown and Gavin Newsom administrations expanded oil and gas drilling in California in recent years. The Brown administration approved 21,000 new or reworked well permits and Newsom’s regulators approved over 4,545 in 2019, his first year as Governor. In addition, state regulators, while opposing new offshore drilling leases in federal waters off California, have increased offshore drilling permits in state waters under existing leases.

At the same time that California officials are stilll approving new oil and gas wells, a report by the California Council on Science & Technology reveals that California taxpayers could be on the hook for more than $500 million to plug thousands of “orphan” wells drilled and abandoned by oil and gas companies.

The study, “Orphan Wells in California: An Initial Assessment of the State’s Potential Liabilities to Plug and Decommission Orphan Oil and Gas Wells,” was conducted at the request of the Division of Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources (DOGGR), now called the California Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGEM), under the California Department of Conservation.

“An initial analysis of readily available information suggests that 5,540 wells in California are, as defined, likely orphan wells or are at high risk of becoming orphan wells in the near future,” the report states. “The State’s potential net liability (subtracting available bonds held by CalGEM) for these wells is estimated to be about $500 million.”

The Western States Petroleum Association (https://God.blue/forward.php?url=http://www.wspa.org) describes itself as “a non-profit trade association that represents companies that account for the bulk of petroleum exploration, production, refining, transportation and marketing in the five western states of Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington.” WSPA’s headquarters is located in Sacramento, California. Additional WSPA locations include offices in Torrance, Concord, Ventura, Bakersfield, and Olympia, Washington.

The association is led by Catherine Reheis-Boyd-Boyd, the WSPA President and former chair of the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) Blue Ribbon Task Force to create “marine protected areas” off the Southern California Coast.

The group spent $2,482,133 lobbying in 2019's third quarter after spending $4,126,703 in the first 2 quarters of the year. WSPA’s expenses for the fourth quarter of 2019 were $2,216,688.92.

For the entire 2017-2018 Session, WSPA spent a total of $15,768,069. The group spent $7,874, 807 to influence California government officials in 2018. Of the four quarters, WSPA spent its most money lobbying, $2,649,018, in the eighth quarter, from October 1 to December 31, 2018.

Over the past decade, WSPA and Big Oil have topped the list of spenders on lobbying the Legislature in California. During the 2015-2016 Legislative Session, the oil industry spent a historic $36.1 million to lobby lawmakers and officials in California.

WSPA and Big Oil wield their power in 6 major ways: through (1) lobbying; (2) campaign spending; (3) serving on and putting shills on regulatory panels; (4) creating Astroturf groups: (5) working in collaboration with media; and (6) contributing to non profit organizations.

California Issues First New Fracking Permits Since July

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California issued 24 hydraulic fracturing permits on Friday, authorizing the first new oil wells in the state since July of last year and angering environmental groups who have been pressuring the state to ban the procedure known as fracking.

California halted all fracking permits last year after Gov. Gavin Newsom fired the state's top oil and gas regulator after a report showed new wells increased 35% since Newsom took office.

In November, the California Geologic Energy Management Division asked for an independent, scientific review of its permitting process to make sure the state was meeting standards for public health, safety and environmental protection.

The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory completed that review, and Friday the state issued 24 permits to Aera Energy for wells in the North Belridge and South Belridge oil fields in Kern County near Bakersfield.

California still has 282 fracking permits awaiting review. State Oil and Gas Supervisor Uduak-Joe Ntuk said the state now has a “more technically robust process” to review those applications, “including requiring additional technical disclosures to improve transparency.”

Fracking is a process for extracting oil and natural gas from rock deep below the earth's surface. It involves shooting a mixture of water, sand and other chemicals at high pressure into rock formations, breaking them up so oil and natural gas can be pumped out.

Environmental groups want to ban the process, arguing the chemicals can pollute groundwater and release toxins into the air once the oil reaches the surface.

Jamie Court, president of Consumer Watchdog, criticized the Newsom administration for issuing new fracking permits while the state was on lockdown because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“With the entire state shut down and kids out of school, what purpose could approving these fracking permits have now other than to do a solid for the oil industry when no one is watching,” Court said.

Aera Energy spokeswoman Cindy Pollard said the permits came at a “crucial time" as the state grapples with a public health crisis.

“As part of California's essential infrastructure, we take very seriously our responsibility to continue to produce the oil that people need to get to work everyday and for folks to continue to partake in the essential functions of daily living,” Pollard said.

The permits issued Friday do not include the process known as “cyclic steaming.” It's similar to fracking, but uses steam instead of water. It’s the type of process Chevron uses at an oil field in the Central Valley that leaked more than 1.3 million gallons (4.9 million liters) of oil and water last summer.

In November, California temporarily banned new cyclic steaming permits. That moratorium is still in place.

Coronavirus Response Bill Includes $3.7 Billion for California Transit Authorities

Cache

Washington—Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today released the following statement on the federal funds for transportation systems across the country that were included as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, or CARES Act, which was recently signed into law:

“The coronavirus relief legislation recently passed by Congress includes $3.7 billion in federal funding for transit systems in cities and on Indian reservations throughout California.

“As Californians stay at home to prevent coronavirus transmission, transit systems are suffering massive losses of revenue. But they must continue running to help doctors, nurses, grocery store employees and other essential workers get to their jobs. These funds will help public transportation systems stay open despite low ridership.

“Providing robust public transportation options is a key part of California’s efforts to combat climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and I stand ready to help support those efforts wherever possible.”

California will receive a total of $3.7 billion in federal funds for transit authorities. A breakdown of cities and Indian reservations receiving funds is available below.
