5 Reasons Why You Should Never Pop Your Pimples & What to Do Instead

Cache

It’s happened to everyone. You wake up, look in the mirror, and see a dreaded red bump appear on your face.

While it may be tempting to try to remove that pimple yourself, you might end up spreading the bacteria to other pores, or worse, ending up with permanent acne scarring.

Just because you shouldn’t pop your pimples yourself doesn’t mean they don’t sometimes need to be popped. The trick is to know what you can safely handle at home without damaging your skin and what needs to be left up to the professionals. Read on to learn more about your options.

5 Reasons to Stop Popping Pimples

What you think of as a “pimple” could actually be one of several different skin issues. Generally speaking, a pimple or blemish is a small cyst that forms when a pore becomes clogged with pus or oil.

Whiteheads are what most people think of when they hear the word pimple – a white plug that forms under the skin, filled with oil and dead skin cells. Also commonly referred to as “pimples” are blackheads, which form when oil and dead cells become exposed to air, making the pore look black. Lastly, pustules are deep acne blemishes that often become red and inflamed – these can be very difficult to remove.

No matter what kind of pimple it is, you should think twice before popping it at home. Here’s why…

  1. You’re interrupting your body’s healing process. A pimple is your body’s response to bacteria and clogged pores, so it’s best to let it complete the process.
  2. You might tear or damage the skin. Popping a pimple involves forcefully removing the contents which can tear the skin, leaving an open wound in place of the bump.
  3. You could make the blemish worse. If you use the wrong technique, you could end up forcing oil and bacteria deeper into your skin, making the pimple become bigger.
  4. You might create more pimples. When you pop a pimple, the bacteria and oil contained by the bump can be spread to the surrounding pores, making more pimples appear.
  5. You’re putting yourself at risk for scarring. The combination of skin damage, inflammation, and irritation caused by popping a pimple can cause your skin to scar or discolor.

In most cases, it takes 3 to 7 days for a pimple to heal on its own. If you try to pop it, it could take as long as 14 days for it to completely heal. Is that split second of satisfaction worth the risk and the added healing time? If you really want to get rid of blemishes, your best bet is to trust a professional.

What Should You Do Instead?

In addition to applying products to support ongoing skin health, professional estheticians also work to address current skin concerns like acne (recurring or one-off bouts). Extractions are an essential aspect of any spa facial, especially if you’re concerned with blemishes and keeping your pores healthy.

Here are some of the benefits of professional extraction:

  • Professional extractions can be great for removing blackheads – these can be tough to remove at home and come with a risk of spreading the bacteria, creating more blemishes.
  • Professional extraction helps dislodge accumulated oil and dirt, cleaning out your pores to help prevent blemishes and to create a better canvas for your makeup and skin care products.
  • A professional esthetician or dermatologist knows exactly how to approach different problems to remove them without damaging the integrity of your follicles.
  • Professional extractions are not without risk for inflammation, but the risk is much lower than performing it yourself, and the esthetician can apply professional products afterward to soothe the skin.
  • A professional esthetician or dermatologist wears gloves and uses sterilized tools to reduce the risk of bacteria transfer which could make your blemishes worse.
  • Professional extractions are customized to your skin type and your blemishes – your esthetician knows which blemishes can be removed and which ones are best left to heal on their own.

When it comes to professional facial treatments, extraction is just one piece of the puzzle. Most spa facials include cleansing and moisturizing as well as other targeted treatments depending on your skin type and skin concerns. If you suffer from chronic acne, regular facials every 4 to 6 weeks can help you keep blemishes at bay and save you from the temptation to pop those pimples yourself.

Keep Your Pores Clear with At-Home Products

Many people don’t pay much attention to their skin until there’s a problem. What you need to remember, however, is that the issues you see began well below the surface.

Popping pimples yourself may make you feel and look better in the short-term, but it does nothing to address the root cause or to keep them from coming back. In addition to professional extraction, you should customize your skin care routine at home to cleanse your skin, exfoliate away dead cells, and keep your skin hydrated to prevent excessive oil production to keep pimples at bay long-term.

Here are some of the top Yon-Ka Paris products to use at home to maintain the results of your spa facial and to keep clogged pores and blemishes under control:

After cleansing and toning, apply using a cotton round to the affected area for 10 minutes then moisturize as usual.

  • Masque 105 – A triple clay mask formulated for dry and sensitive skin types, this purifying and clarifying mask is intended for weekly use. It decongests and oxygenates the complexion, tightening pores and clarifying the skin.

Review of bus rapid transit and branded bus service performance in Australia: From workhorse to thoroughbred

Review of bus rapid transit and branded bus service performance in Australia: From workhorse to thoroughbred Hensher, David A.; Wong, Yale Z; Ho, Loan Bus rapid transit on dedicated right-of-way and branded bus services with a distinct visual identity have been implemented in various forms around Australia over the past three decades. A major public policy debate has surrounded the relative success of these bus priority and branding measures as compared with generic route services in attracting patronage. In this paper, we devise a metric known as a (gross) performance ratio to quantify the success for each of 7 bus rapid transit systems and 20 branded bus services as compared with regular route buses across six Australian capitals. A regression analysis is conducted to determine the statistical significance of various bus priority and brand identity initiatives which are used as inputs into a normalisation procedure to determine the net performance ratio of each service offering. This allows an informed comparison between systems and cities, controlling for operating environment and other service characteristics. The results reinforce the merits of upgraded bus services both as standalone initiatives and also as an alternative to expensive, rail-based infrastructure investment. Measures like network legibility and brand identity all help upgrade the image of the bus from workhorse to thoroughbred.

MERCI A INESVIGO -

                9366987059_6747046625_b

Disassortativity in Biological and Supply Chain Networks

Cache
Disassortativity in Biological and Supply Chain Networks Perera, Supun S.; Bell, Michael G.H.; Latty, Tanya Network science has allowed researchers to model complex real world systems as networks in order to identify non trivial topological patterns. Degree correlations (or assortativity) is one such non trivial topological property, which indicates the extent to which nodes with similar degrees tend to pair up with each other. Biological networks have long been known to display anti-degree correlations (disassortativity), where highly connected nodes tend to avoid linking with each other. However, the mechanism underlying this structural organisation remain not well understood. Recent work has suggested that in some instances, disassortativity can be observed merely as a model artefact due to simple network representations not allowing multiple link formations between the node pairs. This phenomena is known as structural disassortativity. In this paper, we analyse datasets from two distinct classes of networks, namely; man made supply chain networks and naturally occurring biological networks. We examine whether the observed disassortativity in these networks are structurally induced or owing to some external process. Degree preserving randomisation is used to generate an ensemble of null models for each network. Comparison of the degree correlation profiles of each network, against that of their degree preserving randomised counterparts reveal whether the observed disassortativity in each network is of structural nature or not. We find that in all biological networks, the observed disassortativity is of structural nature, meaning their disassortative nature can be fully explained by their respective degree distributions, without attribution to any underlying mechanism which drives the system towards disassortativity. However, in supply chain networks, we find one case where disassortativity is structurally induced and in other cases where it is mechanistically driven. We conclude by emphasizing on ruling out structural disassortativity in future research, prior to investigating mechanisms underlying disassortativity in networks.

Best left-backs in the world: the top 10, ranked

Cache
Full-backs are key in the modern game - whether it’s Roberto Carlos and Cafu bombing down the flanks for Brazil back in the day, or natural centre-backs Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard being plugged out wide for France when they won the 2018 World Cup.ALSO READRanked! The 10 best right-backs in the worldNaturally, there are fewer left-backs than right-backs - after all, there are fewer left-footers. But that doesn’t mean that the world isn’t awash with talent in that particular role: check out our pick of the top 10...10. Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich)Alphonso Davies may only be 19-years-old, he may not even be a natural left-back and he may have only been drafted into the position because a defensive crisis at Bayern Munich has shoehorned David Alaba into the centre - but he’s already proving himself as one of the best full-backs in Europe.Davies is an excellent crosser of the ball and gets up to support play when Bayern attack, such are his natural instincts. His lightning speed, however, means that what he lacks in positional sense he more than makes up for in his ability to get back in time. After starring in the Bundesliga this season and putting in an excellent display against Chelsea in the Champions League, people are starting to sit up and take note of the young Canadian.9. Ben Chilwell (Leicester City)Leicester City have had an outstanding season, with two of the highlights being Ricardo Pereira at right-back and Ben Chilwell on the opposite flank. Chilwell, in particular, has drawn a lot of attention from some of the traditional big boys of the Premier League, with the likes of Manchester City apparently interested in his signature.Chilwell isn’t just good going forward, Harvey Barnes has been helped hugely by having an overlap from Chilwell this season. The 23-year-old is an excellent defender too; he’s superb in transition, and along with Caglar Soyuncu and Jonny Evans, has formed one of the most formidable back fours in the Premier League.8. Raphael Guerreiro (Borussia Dortmund)With the likes of Alex Grimaldo, Ricardo Pereira, and Joao Cancelo available, Portugal have a rich choice when it comes to full-backs. French-born Raphael Guerreiro is another solid option on the left-hand side of the defence, and has been in excellent form for Borussia Dortmund this season.Guerreiro has been deployed as a midfielder for a lot of his time at Signal Iduna Park, but now 26, he’s found a home for himself at left-back under Lucien Favre. He’s a confident passer of the ball, supports attacks well and has excellent stamina. Guerreiro is one of the most reliable members of the Dortmund side and just approaching his peak.7. Juan Bernat (Paris Saint-Germain)Another left-back who enjoyed a spell in Germany, Juan Bernat was signed by Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich from Valencia. Now at Paris Saint-Germain with Thomas Tuchel, the Spaniard has ousted Layvan Kurzawa from first-choice contention and secured a regular spot in the side.A converted left-winger, Bernat still has the instinct to get forward whenever he can to support the likes of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe at PSG. Having worked with Guardiola during a phase of his career where he began experimenting with full-backs a little more - the Catalan boss would frequently use Philipp Lahm in midfield and started inverting his full-backs to push midfielders forward - Bernat has picked up a more rounded understanding of the game.Tuchel’s game relies on intelligent players who can play a variety of systems and Bernat is one such player who is capable of excelling ina multitude of situations.6. David Alaba (Bayern Munich)He’s played in midfield, he’s been a full-on holding midfielder, and given Bayern’s recent treatment table pile-up, he’s slotted into central defence alongside Jerome Boateng. But everyone knows David Alaba as a left-back, and he’s still one of the best in the world.Alaba’s positional sense, vision and ability to break up attacks are the envy of many midfielders, let alone left-backs. The Austrian has been one of the most consistent footballers in the Bundesliga for years now and is perennially linked with moves to the likes of Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea. He may be a centre-back for now, but he’s still a world-class left-back to everyone.5. Marcelo (Real Madrid)Marcelo was key to Real Madrid’s “threepeat”. Los Blancos were able to pack the midfield in big games in the Champions League, with the Brazilian left-back marauding forward to support the attack with pinpoint balls into the middle and one of the most sumptuous first touches that football has ever seen. The 31-year-old may be showing signs of slowing down now but he’s still a force of nature in the Real Madrid side. Marcelo has one of the best engines in the game and still offers Real another attacking option when they’re in possession. He’s arguably the greatest in his position ever.4. Ferland Mendy (Real Madrid)From one Real Madrid left-back to another, Marcelo’s replacement, Ferland Mendy, has made waves since joining the Bernabeu last summer from Lyon.Mendy is a proficient defender, is pacy and has proven himself to offer a useful overlap for Madrid. The 24-year-old is still learning his trade at Real too; he’s a good few years off his peak and already one of the bright sparks of the season. With Eden Hazard ahead of him too, Mendy will be looking to form a solid partnership down Real's left flank when the Belgian comes back from injury.3. Alex Sandro (Juventus)Maurizio Sarri likes his full-backs to get high up the pitch and support the attack, while the centre-backs play out from the back and move the ball vertically. The Juventus boss has arguably never had a left-back as competent as Alex Sandro, either.Sandro is a great defender, excellent in transition and a useful option on the left wing. He combines well with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo in the Juve team and on the occasion that Aaron Ramsey comes into the side - and Sarri opts to reshuffle into a 4-3-1-2, with the Welshman as a trequartista behind a front two - The Old Lady rely on Sandro for his width in the side. The Brazilian has been one of the most coveted defenders in Serie A for years now, and with another good season under his belt, Juventus will face another battle to hold onto him when the transfer window reopens.2. Andrew Robertson (Liverpool)Left-back was an issue not long ago for Jurgen Klopp, who spent a season using James Milner as a makeshift defender. Since Liverpool signed Andrew Robertson though, the back four has become the strength of the team with both the Scot and Trent Alexander-Arnold on the opposite flank not only proving themselves to be competent defenders but becoming huge sources of creativity in the side.Robertson - the better defender of the two - has established himself as his country’s captain and the best left-back in the league in just two and a half seasons at Liverpool. The 26-year-old registered 11 assists in the Premier League last season, as the Reds racked up 95 points.1. Jordi Alba (Barcelona)Jordi Alba began his career at Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy but was released during his youth. After showing Barca what they were missing while at Valencia though, Alba went back to Camp Nou in 2012 - and hasn’t looked back since. In a team consisting of Lionel Messi, Frenkie De Jong and Antoine Griezmann, Alba isn’t the flashiest star on the team sheet, but his consistency over the past eight years has been astonishing, with Barcelona not really having a back-up for him last season. Alba has established himself as a formidable defender and an option in the final third that most clubs would take further forward, too; proving himself to be the complete full-back for club and country. While you're here, why not take advantage of our brilliant new subscribers' offer? International Energy Agency head won't let Big Oil off the hook despite coronavirus crisis

Cache

International Energy Agency executive director Fatih Birol has a tough job these days — responding to an unprecedented crisis now without losing sight of an existential one that must be tackled over decades.

Driving the news: He spoke to Axios yesterday about his work to help stabilize oil markets and ensure coronavirus doesn't sap governments' and companies' work on global warming.

Climate change: Birol says major oil companies, which have recently been expanding their climate pledges and plans, will remain under the microscope.

  • “People around the world will notice whether or not those commitments that the governments, companies [have made] are going to fade away or disappear when the market conditions change,” he said.
  • “I think this is a really important issue for the credibility of the companies and the governments,” Birol added.

Oil markets: Birol has been pushing for G20 energy ministers to collaborate on how to handle the shocking collapse in oil demand. That might be bearing fruit. Those officials are now slated to meet remotely on Friday, a day after a meeting of the OPEC+ group led by Saudi Arabia and Russia.

  • “This is a huge global challenge,” he said, later adding: “There is a need to provide a global answer beyond OPEC+.” The production cuts reportedly contemplated by OPEC+, which are in the 10 million barrel-per-day range, pale in comparison to the demand collapse, he noted.
  • Birol and IEA analysts are keenly aware of the toll that the demand and price collapse will take on people who work in the industry, but he's hopeful about collaboration to manage the twin shocks.
  • I asked Birol about how the U.S., where top-down production decisions aren't a thing, and other market economies could take part in a wider cooperative effort. “There are different countries who can contribute to the problem in different ways,” he said.
  • He noted plans by companies to cut investment. “As a result of that there will be a lot of decline,” Birol said.

Stimulus plans: Birol has been pushing governments to use their economic response packages to boost investments in renewables, efficiency, batteries and more. He said it's going "very well."

  • “We are seeing that there is some hesitation in some countries about whether they should continue to provide support for renewables. We say yes, especially for solar and wind, whose costs are much cheaper than 10 years ago,” he said.
  • More broadly, he said it's possible to design packages that "on one hand provide a boost to economic recovery, but at the same time [are] increasing energy resilience and accelerating the clean energy transition."
  • Birol noted that this year will bring an "unprecedented" decline in global emissions, but for all the wrong reasons.
  • “It is happening because people are dying, economies are melting down, " he said, adding that stimulus responses are important because "we want emissions to come down in order to provide better lives, healthier lives for people."

Comment on Pot, kettle, black by blimbax

"It’s very much a case of the pot calling the kettle black." No, not actually. That only works if both the pot and the kettle are essentially the same. But the United States and Russia are not behaving the same way at all, as you undoubtedly know. The United States is threatening more sanctions on Iran and other countries, and trying to block Cuban medical assistance to other nations, things which exacerbate the situation with regard to the corona virus, not to mention something less connected to the health situation, the push to pull out of the Open Skies Treaty. How is Russia behaving in comparison? So in essence I agree with your article, but an exception needs to be made to the title. The pot and the kettle, in this instance, are not the same color.
