Sunday 7: Expectations for Patriots will need to change

Cache

1. A lot of people have wondered what the Patriots’ plan is moving forward without Tom Brady. It isn’t a full rebuild since players like Devin McCourty and Matthew Slater have been re-signed, but looking at the roster now, and even what can be done between now and the start of the regular season, it’s hard to argue the team will be any better than it was last season when it fell to the Titans on Wild Card Weekend. We view 2020 as a bridge year to 2021 when the team will have upwards of $100 million in cap space and a chance to really reload. While the team can still compete for a playoff spot this coming season, it’s unlikely a Super Bowl berth is in the cards. This coming season may be about getting players the experience they need for the coming seasons, most notably quarterback Jarrett Stidham. Following the year, positions can be really be evaluated and the ones that need boosts can get that via free agency with all the money that will be available. Patience is going to be needed this season and all the games will matter. It won’t be about building to playing the best after Thanksgiving, it will be about doing whatever it takes to get a win each given Sunday. But, with the ability to spend big next offseason, it really should not be long for the Patriots to get back to what they were for the last 20 or so seasons.

2. With Cam Newton still being available and no logical landing spot, some have wondered whether or not Bill Belichick would bring him in on a small contract? It’s an interesting question because in an ideal world Stidham would have another year to learn from a veteran starter, but would one year of Newton really be worth it? It’s not like the Patriots need a quarterback for the years to come because in their ideal world that would be Stidham. Newton’s offense would certainly not be anything close to what the Patriots and Josh McDaniels have established. Newton to New England really doesn’t make much sense.

3. Brady’s introductory conference call with Tampa Bay last week went as expected. He took the high road and really didn’t address any questions head-on about his decision to leave New England. Like he’s been for 20 years, he shied away from really saying anything negative about anyone or anything. Although he didn’t disagree directly, he seemed to go against what Robert Kraft had been saying to various media outlets that it really was Brady’s decision to leave the Patriots and if he wanted to stay things could have worked out. “I am not responsible for how other people will say certain things," Brady said, before praising Kraft for what he’s done for him over the years.

4. Relating to Stephen Gostkowski’s release last week, it was not a salary cap dump. Of his $3.5 million salary in 2020, $2 million was guaranteed and the release saved the team just under $1 million against the cap. It is worth noting if he signs with another team, the Patriots will get a credit for what that team pays him, but that will go towards the 2021 cap, not 2020. It was noteworthy Belichick released a statement praising Gostkowski following the move, as that is something he rarely does. It shows the amount of respect the coach has for the long-time kicker.

5. Want to know the impact Brady is already having in Tampa Bay? BetOnline released spreads on the Buccaneers’ 16 games and they are underdogs in only one — +5.5 at New Orleans. These odds have the game a pick ‘em when the Saints play at Tampa Bay and even a two-point favorite when the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs come to town. Imagine how many games they would be favored in if Brady had not signed there? These certainly will change as the season plays out, but right now the oddsmakers believe Brady will have a huge effect on his new team.

6. Reading the comments of the three Patriots players who departed for Miami via free agency (Kyle Van Noy, Elandon Roberts and Ted Karras) it was clear Brian Flores was a major reason why. All three, especially Roberts and Van Noy, worked closely with him when he was with the Patriots and they were able to see first-hand what kind of coach he is. “My number one reason, like I keep saying, is Coach Flores," Roberts told reporters. While they still have a ways to go, it’s clear the Dolphins are going in the right direction.

7. The NFL Draft will go on as scheduled from April 23-25, but will be done as remotely as possible. There will be no fan gatherings in Las Vegas. There will actually be nothing in Vegas. It’s likely to be based out of the NFL Network studios. Now that it is officially happening in April, teams will continue to contact prospects via FaceTime or Skype since no in-person meetings are permitted. Don’t be surprised to hear a few names linked to the Patriots in the coming days and weeks.

Q&A with five-time Grammy winner Robert Cray - created a sound that rises from American roots and arrives today both fresh and familiar

"I think it's had a strong impact on what goes on, because first of all the music speaks to the people, if it’s African-American music, say for example the young kids, they listen to rap, they’re speaking to people who know life-style, the same lifestyle, if there’s a message in it that they want to come across, people understand the message and they respond accordingly."Robert Cray: That’s What I HeardFive-time Grammy winner Robert Cray released his newest album, That’s What I Heard (2020 via Nozzle Records), produced by Steve Jordan. The album features a mix of blues, soul, R&B, and Gospel, with guests Steve Perry and Ray Parker Jr. Robert Cray has created a sound that rises from American roots and arrives today both fresh and familiar. Over the past four decades, Cray has created a sound that stems from American roots, blues, soul and R&B. With 20 acclaimed studio albums, several live albums, and five Grammy wins, the Blues Hall of Famer celebrates the music of Curtis Mayfield, Bobby “Blue” Bland, The Sensational Nightingales and four new original songs on That’s What I Heard.                                 Robert Cray / Photo credit by Jeff KatzCray and Steve Jordan started working together in 1999 when Jordan produced the Grammy-winning, Take Your Shoes Off, and the recent Grammy nominated, Robert Cray & Hi Rhythm. That’s What I Heard is their sixth album together and was recorded at L.A’s Capitol Studios. The album has a distinct Same Cooke vibe to the music. Robert’s band features Richard Cousins (bass), Dover Weinberg (keyboards), Terence F. Clark (drums), and Steve Jordan (drums, percussion).Interview by Michael LimniosSpecial Thanks: Kim Slagle (Aller Entertainment) & Katerina Lefkidou (transcription)What do you miss most nowadays from the music and the feeling of the past?Well you know, there’s not a lot of what I call the blues and soul and that kind of feeling to compare the music that is called soul and blues these days, it’s changed. And I guess change is always kind of difficult in one’s mind sometimes to accept.  But you have to accept it. Like now, we don’t have John Lee Hooker, we don’t have BB King, we don’t have Bobby Blue Bland anymore you know? That’s how the world is, that’s how life is. I guess it’s best to say that I miss those people. What are your hopes and what are your fears for the future of the music?Well the hopes are that people can go back and listen to some of those bug names that I just mentioned, and be inspired through that, as well as yourself, as well as the times you’re living in, but to never forget those who came before, or your inspiration as well. What are the lines that connect the legacy of Afro-American music from Gospel to Soul, R n’B, Funk, Blues and beyond?I think the main line is emotion, feeling. Being personal with the music. Whether it’s the gospel and the emotion that comes out of gospel music, even jazz, for example, just people playing their emotions and the feeling that they get from playing their instruments. I think that’s how they connect. How do you describe what characterizes your music philosophy?I think being in the moment, you know? Being there and participating and being there for the song.  I think that’s the most important thing. And I’m putting that into the context of being on stage live, when there’s so many different things that can grab your attention, whether it’s the audience or whether you’re thinking about the next song while you’re playing one song, whatever. You have to let all those other things go and be there and be focused into the song. It’s an ongoing process it’s a philosophy that I think about and it’s also a challenge. But I find that things work the best once you’re focused for the tune, ‘cause you play for the tune, you’re not playing through the tune. And how do you want it (your music) to affect people? It would all depend on the song. Some songs are serious, so if I can get the focus to get the song across to people, that’s what I’d like to have accomplished, if it’s a serious tune. If it’s a fun song, then that’s what I’m trying to accomplish as well, yeah it would depend on the tune.                                     Robert Cray / Photo credit by Jeff Katz"I think the main line is emotion, feeling. Being personal with the music. Whether it’s the gospel and the emotion that comes out of gospel music, even jazz, for example, just people playing their emotions and the feeling that they get from playing their instruments. I think that’s how they connect."What is the impact of Afro-American roots music on the socio-cultural implications?I think it's had a strong impact on what goes on, because first of all the music speaks to the people, if it’s African-American music, say for example the young kids, they listen to rap, they’re speaking to people who know life-style, the same lifestyle, if there’s a message in it that they want to come across, people understand the message and they respond accordingly.  And the music used to be so much more regional, say for example New Orleans jazz or the blues out of the Delta, or the blues coming from Chicago overtime, it spoke to certain communities and the music spoke to their communities in order to make the people who knew the same lifestyle, to understand and to make them feel good or to tell them a story. Nowadays it’s changed, the lines have been blurred with the massive amounts of communication and streaming and record production. It’s harder to grab masses in the same kind of way that you could do with people regionally.Too many experiences in your life, too many experiences in music. What are some of the most important lessons that you have learned from your experience, what have you learned about yourself from your experience?Well I learned that you have to be yourself.  And I think that once you understand that you have to be yourself, you are unique, everybody is unique you know? I’ve learned that if you’re honest with yourself, everybody is equal, everybody is the same, what they want with life is the same, to be happy, to be healthy. I think that’s the most important thing and that nobody is better than anybody else. Everybody has their own way of interpreting life or music. So, I guess those are the most important things I’ve learned. What was the best advice anyone ever gave you?I think Albert Collins, when we were young and we used to back him up.  He said “Have you called your parents? Do they know where you are?” (laughing) I think that’s important, to not forget your family. Why do you think that Robert Cray continues to generate such a devoted following?I’m hoping that people like the messages that we’re sending and it’s a good feeling. And I think people enjoy our energy and what we bring to the table when we come to play, we give it our all and we have a good time and we play... I think that’s what people come to see.Is it easier to write and play the blues and soul as you get older?I don’t know if the process of song-writing is any easier, but I think with more experience in life you have more to write about.                  Robert Cray / Photo credit by Jeff Katz"It would all depend on the song. Some songs are serious, so if I can get the focus to get the song across to people, that’s what I’d like to have accomplished, if it’s a serious tune. If it’s a fun song, then that’s what I’m trying to accomplish as well, yeah it would depend on the tune."What is happiness (for Robert)?Just being healthy and knowing that the family is fine too, and being able to do what I do, with music.Let’s take a trip with a time machine. Where would you really want to go with a time machine?Hm, I don’t know. I don’t know if I want to know what’s gonna happen in the future and think about that. (laughing) I think I want to be where I’m at right now and just live in the moment, ‘cause you never know what’s around the corner and I think that’s a good thing. I think that’s a good thing. Never wanted to plan too far in advance things except for dinner. (laughing)Are there any really funny memories from studios, and studio sessions that you’d like to share with us from the last album?Oh yeah, there is one. When we were in the control room, we were taking a break recording, a lunch break and so we were in the studio. There’s a lounge upstairs above the control room, so I was upstairs and my family was there, so I’d gone up and then I came back down into the control room and there’s a door into the control room that leads into the hallway. And so as I came down the stairs, there’s this guy standing in the doorway and immediately I’m thinking “Oh somebody left the door open” cause they were listening to a playback and there was a guy standing there and I was thinking “Oh we should have closed the door”. So I didn’t say anything to that person and I start to walk over to the control board and I turned around and I looked again and it happened to be Steve Perry from the band Journey. And I turned around and I said “Hi Steve, I’m Robert.” And he said “Hey man, that’s a great tune you got there, I want to sing on that.” He had come in to see one of the engineers that was working on our record with us, Niko Bolas is engineer’s name, he has worked with Niko in the past and had come to see him and our producer said “Yeah sure” so both of the Steves went into the room and they sang background on the song. That was a funny story. What would you say characterizes your new album That’s What I Heard (2020) in comparison to debut “Who’s Been Talking?”                Robert Cray / Photo by Ray Varner First the difference between the new one and the first one is in the first it was my first ever time in the studio and nobody told me that I could turn my amplifier up. (laughing) That’s how I played and when I went back and listened to that first album the guitar sounded so thin. It was a matter of experience. Your first time at the studio, you don’t really know the producers and you know, to this day now we have all this studio experience and I have to quote our bass player Richard Cousins “Making this record was the most fun we’ve ever had in the studio” and I have to agree with him. We had a really good time, worked with really great producers, like Steve Jordan, worked with excellent engineers and you know the people that helped the record, Chuck Findley on horn, Trevor Lawrence on horn, Ray Parker Jr. adding a little guitar, Steve Perry singing on something, Steve Jordan playing drums on something, we just had a blast in the studio, so those are the big differences. And my last question is what has been the hardest obstacle to overcome as a person and as an artist and has this helped you to become a better blues musician?I think that the biggest obstacle over the years has been just being yourself and I think now overtime it makes it a lot more comfortable to be yourself. Get out of your own way, mentally. Just be in the moment, be free on stage. Experiment take a chance don’t get locked up in your head.  And you’ll find that you can go places with music.Robert Cray - HomeSee More

Fauci: US can expect more than 100,000 COVID-19 deaths, millions of cases

Cache

On CNN’s State of the Union Sunday, the leading U.S. authority on the COVID-19 pandemic made some grim predictions about the course of the novel coronavirus as it rages through communities within the United States.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the longtime director for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and emerging face of American leadership in the fight against the virus, estimated that the U.S. may see between 100,000 and 200,000 deaths from COVID-19, the deadly disease caused by the novel coronavirus. A deeply-respected authority on viral diseases, Fauci assisted in guiding the federal response to SARS, MERS, Ebola and now the novel coronavirus.

Fauci cautioned that these estimates are based on models and a model is only as accurate as the assumptions that go into building it. An extreme worst-case situation in which the coronavirus causes millions of American deaths remains “not impossible but very, very unlikely.”

“Whenever the models come in, they give a worst-case scenario and a best-case scenario,” Fauci told CNN’s Jake Tapper. “Generally, the reality is somewhere in the middle. I’ve never seen a model of the diseases that I’ve dealt with where the worst case actually came out. They always overshoot.”

Fauci believes that the U.S. is likely going to have “millions of cases” but broadly cautioned against relying on modeling estimates while still stressing the extreme risk the virus poses.

“I just don’t think that we really need to make a projection when it’s such a moving target that we could so easily be wrong and mislead people,” Fauci said. He added that outbreaks in New York, New Orleans and other areas with “serious problems” remain worrisome, indicating that the data at hand is plenty of cause for concern.

As of Sunday morning, 2,197 people in the U.S. have lost their lives fighting the virus, with 125,313 confirmed cases in the country to date according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The number of actual cases of the virus on the ground is likely substantially higher, as testing challenges continue to trouble some parts of the country and many mild or asymptomatic cases go untested.

What you need to know today about the virus outbreak

Cache

President Donald Trump has backed away from calling for a quarantine for coronavirus hotspots in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, instead directing Saturday night that a “strong Travel Advisory” be issued to stem the spread of the outbreak.

Trump's talk earlier Saturday of what he called a quarantine for those hard-hit areas raised questions whether the federal government had the power to do so. Vice President Mike Pence has since tweeted federal health officials are urging residents of the three states “to refrain from non-essential travel for the next 14 days.”

The United States has more confirmed coronavirus infections than any other country. Cities including Detroit, Chicago and New Orleans are growing as hot spots of infection, while New York City continues to be pummeled. Nurses there are calling for more masks and other gear to safeguard themselves against the virus that has so far sickened more than 52,000 people and killed over 700 in New York state, mostly in the city. Italy's death toll from the coronavirus pandemic is the highest in the world, with 10,000 fatalities.

Here are some of AP's top stories Saturday on the world's coronavirus pandemic. Follow APNews.com/VirusOutbreak for updates through the day and APNews.com/UnderstandingtheOutbreak for stories explaining some of its complexities.

WHAT'S HAPPENING TODAY:

— The coronavirus continued its unrelenting spread across the U.S. with fatalities doubling in two days to more than 2,000 and authorities saying Saturday an infant who tested positive died in Chicago. Elsewhere, Russia announced a full border closure and prevention measures turned violent in parts of Africa, with Kenyan police firing tear gas and officers elsewhere seen on video striking people with batons.

— Health experts say U.S. prisons and jails are a potential epicenter for the coronavirus: Social distancing is nearly impossible, medical services behind bars have long been substandard and even hand sanitizer is deemed contraband in some because of its alcohol content.

— New York Gov. Andrew Cuomohas delayed the state's presidential primary from April to June to keep people from gathering during the coronavirus pandemic. More than a dozen states have delayed some elections, in some cases including their presidential primaries.

— Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says anyone showing symptoms of COVID-19 will not be allowed to board domestic flights or intercity trains. Trudeau's wife tested positive for the virus but she said Saturday she has recovered.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death. The vast majority of people recover.

Here are the symptoms of the virus compared with the common flu.

One of the best ways to prevent spread of the virus is washing your hands with soap and water. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends first washing with warm or cold water and then lathering soap for 20 seconds to get it on the backs of hands, between fingers and under fingernails before rinsing off.

You should wash your phone, too. Here’s how.

Misinformation overload: How to separate fact from fiction and rumor from deliberate efforts to mislead.

TRACKING THE VIRUS: Drill down and zoom in at the individual county level, and you can access numbers that will show you the situation where you are, and where loved ones or people you’re worried about live.

___

ONE NUMBER:

2.2 MILLION: More than 2.2 million people are imprisoned in America, more than any other place in the world. Health experts say prisons and jails are a potential epicenter for America’s coronavirus pandemic.

___

IN OTHER NEWS:

PORTRAITS FROM THE PANDEMIC: The doctors and nurses on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic in Italy are almost unrecognizable behind their masks, scrubs, gloves and hairnets — the flimsy battle armor that is their only barrier to contagion.

Rhode Island door knocks in search of fleeing New Yorkers

Cache

WESTERLY, RI (AP) — The Rhode Island National Guard started going door to door on Saturday in coastal areas to inform any New Yorkers who may have come to the state that they must self-quarantine for 14 days while Gov. Gina Raimondo expanded the mandatory self-quarantine to anyone visiting the state.

Raimondo also ordered residents to stay at home, with exceptions for getting food, medicines or going to the doctor, and ordered nonessential retail businesses to close Monday until April 13 to help stop the spread of the coronavirus. She also directed realtors and hotel operators to include new requirements that any out-of-state residents must quarantine for 14 days in their purchase agreements.

State Police set up a checkpoint on I-95 in Hope Valley on Friday where drivers with New York license plates must stop and provide contact information and were told to self-quarantine for two weeks, WPRI.com reported.

If New Yorkers don't comply, they face fines and jail time, Raimondo said, adding that that's not the goal.

“I want to be crystal clear about this: If you're coming to Rhode Island from New York you are ordered into quarantine. The reason for that is because more than half of the cases of coronavirus in America are in New York," Raimondo said, adding that it's not meant to be discriminatory.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo called the order "reactionary" and unconstitutional, saying he'd sue Rhode Island if the policy isn't rescinded but believed they could "work it out."

"I understand the goal ... but there’s a point of absurdity, and I think what Rhode Island did is at that point of absurdity," said Cuomo, a Democrat. “We have to keep the ideas and the policies we implement positive rather than reactionary and emotional.”

President Donald Trump said Saturday that he had spoken with some governors and was considering some type of a quarantine to prevent people in New York and parts of New Jersey and Connecticut from traveling. Trump Late Saturday, though, he tweeted that a travel advisory should be administered and not a quarantine.

Trump told reporters at the White House that it would be for a “short period of time, if we do it at all.” He said he had spoken with Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., and Andrew Cuomo, D-N.Y., the country's epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbot on Thursday joined other states in imposing quarantines on air travelers from the New York area, including New Jersey and Connecticut, and New Orleans, two places where COVID-19 outbreak is more severe. The Republican said travelers who don’t comply with the 14-day quarantine risk jail time, adding that state troopers would conduct visits to make sure people were staying put.

In Rhode Island, which reported its first two deaths from COVID-19 on Saturday, a team of a Westerly police officer and a Guard member were visiting stately and modest coastal homes in the Westerly neighborhood of Watch Hill collecting contact information from New Yorkers and telling them to self-quarantine. They expected to go to about 1,000 homes over a few days.

"This is more of an education tool to make people aware and comply with what we are asking them to do,” said Westerly, Rhode Island, police chief Shawn Lacey. “We are certainly hope it doesn’t get to enforcement action that has to happen."

Reha Kocatas, a New Yorker who arrived March 22 from the Bahamas to his Rhode Island home, said his wife and two children were visited by a police officer and a national guardsmen. Already under a 14-day quarantine per a state order because he had arrived from outside the 50 states and the District of Columbia, Kocatas said he volunteered information to the authorities including the number of people in the home, when they entered Rhode Island and his and his wife’s date of birth.

But he questioned why it was necessary to send a police officer to his door.

“It seemed like a pretty large waste of resources for something that could have been volunteered through an online form pretty quickly,” he said.

“If New Yorkers are such high risk individuals, why are we putting first responders in front of these individuals is a little questionable since there is no action item at the end of the day," he continued. "They weren’t going to remove us. It seemed like bureaucratic grandstanding. The local community that happens to be here believes that it’s a waste of precious resources when time is the essence in preparing for other things."

Ramaindo said only an estimated 50% of Rhode Islanders are complying with social distancing, with crowds spotted at a beach, groups at parks, crowds at big box stores and house parties. As a result, she banned gatherings of more than five people and urged people to limit interactions to the same five.

For those who are not complying with social distancing: “I've said it last week, I'm going to say it again, knock if off. You are risking the lives of everyone in this state,” she said.

People able to work from home must do so, she said. Residents who work in Massachusetts and must go to work, must self-quarantine after work at home, she said.

For most people, the virus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, or death.

Trump Backs Down on Quarantine After Cuomo Warns It Would Be ‘Declaration of War’

Cache

Trump Backs Down on Quarantine After Cuomo Warns It Would Be ‘Declaration of War’President Trump appeared to back down late Saturday on the idea of imposing an enforceable quarantine on coronavirus hot spots like New York, deeming the measure “not necessary” just hours after he sparked criticism for floating it as an option. “On the recommendation of the White House CoronaVirus Task Force, and upon consultation with the Governor’s of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, I have asked the @CDCgov to issue a strong Travel Advisory, to be administered by the Governors, in consultation with the Federal Government,” Trump tweeted on Saturday evening. “A quarantine will not be necessary. Full details will be released by CDC tonight. Thank you!”The CDC later released a travel advisory urging New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut residents to avoid “non-essential domestic travel” for 14 days. The announcement came shortly after New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo warned against the proposed quarantine of “hot spots,” saying it would be nothing short of a “federal declaration of war” that would pit state authorities against the federal government. “It wouldn’t just be New York, New Jersey, Connecticut. Next week it would be Louisiana with New Orleans, and the week after that it would be Detroit, Michigan, and it would run all across the nation. I don’t think the president is looking to start a lot of wars with a lot of states just about now for a lot of reasons,” Cuomo said in an interview with CNN. In addition to such a quarantine likely being illegal, Cuomo said, it would cause “chaos” and “mayhem” and only make matters worse during the coronavirus pandemic. The governor said he had not spoken with Trump after the president announced the possibility of a short-term enforced quarantine on “hotspots” of the novel coronavirus, including New York state, New Jersey, and some parts of Connecticut.Immediately after Trump voiced the proposal, Cuomo appeared frustrated with the idea of an enforced quarantine (“I don’t know what that means”) and said the president had not discussed the matter with him when they spoke on Saturday morning.“I don’t know how that could be legally enforceable and, from a medical point of view, I don’t know what you would be accomplishing,” Cuomo added. “I don’t even like the sound of it, not even understanding what it is.”Trump told reporters on the White House lawn on Saturday that he had spoken to Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, who had complained about New Yorkers traveling south—and bringing coronavirus with them.“A lot of the states that are infected but don’t have a big problem, they’ve asked me if I’ll look at it so we’re going to look at it,” Trump said.“We’re thinking about certain things. Some people would like to see New York quarantined because it’s a hotspot. We might not have to do it, but there’s a possibility that sometime today we’ll do a quarantine, short-term, two weeks on New York. Probably New Jersey, certain parts of Connecticut. I’d rather not do it, but maybe we need it.”The president doubled down on his suggestion in a tweet on Saturday afternoon and in remarks at a Virginia naval base, where he was seeing off the naval hospital ship, Comfort, that is heading to New York. “This does not apply to people such as truckers from outside the New York area who are making deliveries or are simply transiting through,” Trump said. “It won’t affect trade in any way.” He added that “a decision will be made, one way or another, shortly.” The question of whether the federal government has the power to impose restrictions on states has been a source of speculation since the virus has spread throughout the country.Federal laws give the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) the authority to prevent the spread of communicable diseases between states by limiting the movement of people who are “reasonably believed to be infected with a quarantinable communicable disease.” However there is no law that grants the president authority to prevent an entire nation’s movements, NBC News reported. Any attempt to do so would likely be challenged in court.Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and a member of the White House coronavirus task force, has expressed his support for a potential 14-day national shutdown to slow the spread of the virus. “I think Americans should be prepared that they are going to have to hunker down significantly more than we as a country are doing,” Fauci said, stressing the importance of social distancing in the fight against the virus. The top infectious disease expert, however, has not provided any explanation for what such a plan could look like or how it could be carried out.Michael Ulrich, a public health law professor at Boston University, said the federal government would “have to be able to justify that some group is a credible threat to others, and that’s an easier thing to do on an individual level.” He added that it would be “a really hard thing to prove.”Rep. Justin Amash (I-MI), a former Republican who has been a fervent critic of Trump, questioned his power to implement such an order. “Under which authority?” Amash wrote on Twitter on Saturday. As of Saturday, New York reported at least 52,318 cases of the novel coronavirus, with over half in New York City and at least 7,328 in hospital. Coronavirus cases in the United States crossed the 100,000 mark on Friday, making it the new global epicenter of the pandemic. New Jersey reported at least 8,825 cases of the virus, and 108 deaths as of Saturday, while Connecticut confirmed at least 1,291 cases and 27 deaths, according to the Johns Hopkins University & Medicine tracker.

Trump drops idea of New York lockdown as U.S. death count crosses 2,000

By Andy Sullivan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he would issue a travel warning for the hard-hit New York area to limit the spread of the coronavirus, backing off from an earlier suggestion that he might try to cut off the region entirely.

“A quarantine will not be necessary,” he said on Twitter.

Trump’s announcement came as the U.S. death count crossed 2,100, more than double the level from two days ago. The United States has now recorded more than 122,000 cases of the respiratory virus, the most of any country in the world.

Since the virus first appeared in the United States in late January, Trump has vacillated between playing down the risks of infection and urging Americans to take steps to slow its spread.

Trump said on Saturday afternoon that he might impose a ban on travel in and out of New York and parts of New Jersey and Connecticut, the U.S. epicenter of the disease, to protect other states that have yet to bear the brunt. He offered few specifics.

Critics promptly called the idea unworkable, saying it would cause chaos in a region that serves as the economic engine of the eastern United States, accounting for 10 percent of the population and 12 percent of GDP.

“If you started walling off areas all across the country it would be totally bizarre, counter-productive, anti-American,” New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said on CNN.

Hours later, Trump dropped the idea, saying he would instead ask the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to issue a “strong Travel Advisory” that would be administered by the three states’ governors.

The CDC later warned the states’ residents against non-essential domestic travel for 14 days. It said the warning did not apply to employees of “critical infrastructure industries” including trucking, public health and financial services.

It was the latest reversal for Trump, who has been reluctant to order U.S. companies to produce much-needed medical supplies, despite the pleas of governors and hospital workers.

Tests to track the disease’s progress also remain in short supply, despite repeated White House promises that they would be widely available.

On Saturday, Trump appeared to soften his previous comments calling for the U.S. economy to be reopened by mid-April. “We’ll see what happens,” he said. Graphic: U.S. coronavirus – https://God.blue/forward.php?url=https://graphics.reuters.com/HEALTH-CORONAVIRUS-USA/0100B5K8423/index.html

Though Trump has apparently opted not to impose checkpoints on highways and airports leading out of New York, some states have imposed limits of their own.

New Yorkers arriving in Florida and Rhode Island face orders to self-isolate if they intend to stay, and the governors of Pennsylvania and West Virginia have asked visiting New Yorkers to voluntarily self-quarantine.

New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu on Saturday asked all visitors to his state who don’t come for work reasons to voluntarily self-quarantine.

New coronavirus cases in China leveled off after the government imposed a strict lockdown of Wuhan, the epicenter of the disease.

The body count continues to climb in Italy, where authorities have blocked travel across the country and prevented people from leaving their houses for all but essential reasons.

Any travel restrictions, voluntary or not, might be too late.

The number of coronavirus patients in California hospitals increased by more than one-third overnight, Governor Gavin Newsom said.

Officials in Louisiana, where Mardi Gras celebrations late last month in New Orleans fueled an outbreak, reported 17 additional deaths and 569 new cases on Saturday.

The disease has proven most fatal among the elderly, but Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker said on Saturday that an infant had died in his state. Graphic: Tracking the spread of the global coronavirus – https://God.blue/forward.php?url=https://graphics.reuters.com/CHINA-HEALTH-MAP/0100B59S39E/index.html

American healthcare workers are appealing for more protective gear and equipment as they face a surge of patients.

Doctors are also especially concerned about a shortage of ventilators, breathing machines needed for those suffering from COVID-19, the pneumonia-like respiratory ailment caused by the highly contagious novel coronavirus.

Hospitals have also sounded the alarm about scarcities of drugs, oxygen tanks and trained staff.

On Saturday, nurses protested outside the Jacobi Medical Center in New York, saying supervisors asked them to reuse their masks, putting their own health at risk.

One medical trainee at New York Presbyterian Hospital said they were given just one mask.

“It’s not the people who are making these decisions that go into the patients’ rooms,” said the trainee, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Former Republican senator Tom Coburn dies aged 72

Former Republican senator Tom Coburn dies aged 72* Oklahoman served in House of Representatives and Senate * Rightwing Republican advocated range of conservative causes * Resigned senate in 2014 after cancer diagnosisThe former Republican senator Tom Coburn has died at 72, according to a newspaper in his native Oklahoma. The Oklahoman published a statement from the senator’s family and said he died after “a long fight with prostate cancer”. Coburn, the paper said, "served in the Senate from 2005 to 2015 and in the US House of Representatives from 1995 to 2001. After leaving the Senate, he pushed for a constitutional convention and advocated for a range of conservative fiscal causes.”Mike Pence, the vice-president, wrote on Twitter: “Tom Coburn was a great conservative voice in the United States Congress and American physician whose legacy will live on. Karen and I send our deepest sympathies and prayers to his family during this tough time.”Coburn was a doctor who resigned his Senate seat following his cancer diagnosis.“This decision isn’t about my health, my prognosis or even my hopes and desires,” he said then. “As a citizen, I am now convinced that I can best serve my own children and grandchildren by shifting my focus elsewhere.”One such effort was in support of rightwing efforts to call a Constitutional Convention, in an attempt to dramatically restrict the powers of the US federal government.“We’re in a battle for the future of our country,” Coburn told the annual convention of the American Legislative Exchange Council (Alec) in New Orleans in August 2018. “We’re either going to become a socialist, Marxist country like western Europe, or we’re going to be free. As far as me and my family and my guns, I’m going to be free.”
