NON-LINEAR–A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME AND MICROCOSMIC SPACE provides a view of earth invisible to the naked human eye. Director Linnea Rundgren, a specialist in scientific imaging, used an electron microscope to capture fly feet, butterfly proboscis, mycelium, and more. She collaborated with poet Hugo Farrant, the film's co-director, on a narrative about evolution and life on earth. This six-minute film, which just won the Visual Science Award at the 2018 Imagine Science Film Festival, makes its online premiere on Sloan Science & Film and will be watchable here November 16 through December 14.
We spoke with Rundgren from her home in Sweden about the film.
Science & Film: How did your work in scientific imaging inform the way that you made this film?
Linnea Rundgren: The film is based on my work, which is sprung from my inspiration and my passion. Most of the images in the film are part of a scientific research project that I’ve been illustrating. I’ve been interested in science since forever, but with that has evolved this notion that there are underlying patterns that define everything that we can express through mathematics, verbally, or visually. [The patterns] are often geometric shapes, or they might be symmetrical or fractal, which is something the human mind responds to in a positive way. I’ve been fascinated by patterns and by the way things are.
S&F: Can you talk about the way you take the images?
LR: In this film, most of the images are taken with an electron microscope. I do a lot of my EM work at RMIT University in Melbourne and I’ve got another lab in Stockholm as well, which I’m working with. The electron microscope is essentially like a great big camera except it doesn’t use light, it uses electrons to record an image on the sensor. People use it to look at things but not necessarily with the intent to make awesome images. But I found when I was playing around with the microscope that you can use its parameters to adjust the image, similarly to how you would use the aperture and shutter speed on a camera, so depending on what voltage you use, or the distance to the sample, you get different effects and different surface detail. You can really manipulate a lot.
It has been a long process of experimenting. At times I have burned samples because I was using too high a voltage for the amount of coating for example. It’s also about how you treat the sample: if you put solid rock underneath the microscope it’s not going to look very exciting, but if you synthesize it and grow it then it could look amazing.
Ultimately I found that I mastered the understanding of how these things fit together and then I was served a platter of awesome tools to play with in this miniature realm.
S&F: It sounds like you spend a lot of time staging your shots.
LR: Oh my god, yeah. Preparation is key. That’s a big part of the process, preparing [the sample] and deciding how you’re going to position it. This can be a full day venture.
S&F: For the film, did you prepare all those samples in the same way?
LR: All different ways. The brain cells we had to grow from stem cells. We treated some of them with an amino acid that was inspiring a beta-amyloid plaque to grow so that we could observe the way that Alzheimer’s disease evolves as the cells are growing. It was part of an Alzheimer’s research project. It’s like we grew a brain in a little petri dish. Then it got gold-coated. So I guess that particular individual unfortunately died. It is a strange thing to think that there are a bunch of little brains that I grew. I wonder if they’re thinking about stuff. How bizarre.
NON-LINEAR is directed by Linnea Rundgren and Hugo Farrant, animated by Dave Abott, with music composed by Belgian electronic music pioneer Sk’p. Rundgren often works in collaboration with artists. Most recently, she made the background images for Children’s Book Of The Year Award-winner Do Not Lick This Book, by Idan Ben-Barak.

Covid-19 is a warning. We can take it as such or ignore it if we get through it and come out the other side.
High density, high population, high throughput, globalised manufacturing, global high mobility, are not working for us now. When we first learned in January of the outbreak of Covid -19 in Wuhan my first thought was that "This will be in Melbourne soon." Thirty years ago, I would not have had such a thought because China was so distant and separate. I was right, within a few days it was in Melbourne. On January 25th Australia had its first four cases, the first in Melbourne and another three in Sydney. At this time the city of Wuhan in China was in "lockdown".
I was most alarmed to learn that the disease could be spread by people with no symptoms, and that many did not have symptoms. For me that was the key piece of information that should have dictated government protocol to manage contagion.
By March 2nd, the first two cases of community transmission of Covid -19 were reported in Sydney. One was a woman who caught if from her brother recently returned from Iran and the second was a health care worker, working in close proximity with patients. On March 13th, the Victorian health department announced nine new cases of coronavirus in Victoria, including the state’s first community transmission, and it is now being transmitted at an alarming rate. As at 6.30 p.m. March 28th, Victoria's total case numbers were 685.
Now Victoria is in partial lockdown. We are being asked to stay home as much as possible. Businesses have been closed down, sporting facilities are closed, even beaches are closed in Melbourne. How did our governments let it come to this? If I could see it coming, they should have seen it coming. Why were governments apparently powerless to stop it?
Finally, the Tasmanian Government is now not letting people arrive from the mainland without quarantine. I heard a commentator say that this takes advantage of its geographical status as an island. That’s great, but the rest of Australia is also an island! We have blown our chance to stay clear of this scourge. If we had not blown our chances, people would not have had to die or lose their jobs. To me it is a debacle.
So, people will be spending a lot more time at home. The trouble is that "home" is not what it was thirty years ago. Home is now more likely to be an apartment, rather than a house with a garden. For those with a garden, it is far easier to endure days on end without going outside one's home, than it is for someone in a one-bedroom flat.
Lockdown arrangements have been introduced incrementally, which strikes me as policy on the run, and smacks of "shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted." We hear that schools must remain open and then they are closed. We heard the Prime Minister saying that he is going to a rugby match when most of the people I know had been avoiding crowds for at least a couple of weeks.
Why was a protocol not in place for protecting Australia's population? Now people have died, more will get sick and die, people out of work could lose their houses. The fallout is immense. The only thing I can think of giving the Australian government credit for is being ahead of the even more sluggish World Health Organisation, in declaring Covid-19 a pandemic.
The neo-liberal economy, globalisation, and the pandemic.
The very arrangement that makes money for the few is a bad arrangement for the many. Goods and labour move around the world as though geographical distance were meaningless. The movement of ships spreads environmental pests. The movement of people spreads disease. With the increased population density in Melbourne and other cities, due to rapid population growth, mostly from overseas migration, we in Australia are more likely to have close encounters with strangers than we would have had before Australia’s population numbers were ramped up. On a day like today - sunny and warm in autumn - we crave a walk outside. We think of the beach, but hesitate because others will be thinking the same, and it will be hard to walk on the now defined pathway without encountering people at close quarters, even briefly.
The member for Corangamite was heard on the ABC a few days ago, saying that she had been a strong proponent of upgrades to the Great Ocean Road but now she urges people not to come to coastal towns even if they own "holiday houses" there. The recent obsession with increased mobility in this state is now something that will only serve Covid -19. Small towns have welcomed the commerce that tourism brings, but now it is unimportant compared with the need to stay isolated.
Australia's ailing economy: Economic stimulation means increasing human transactions and disease transmission
Stimulus packages surely are meant to stimulate the very behaviour that spreads the disease. They contradict moves to save the health of the nation. That is, they aim to increase economic activity, to wit transactions, whilst locking down decreases transactions. The responsibility of the government now is to support the population directly affected by the measures taken to save the health of the population. Those people directly affected are paying a big price.
This plague was forecast
Scientists have warned us for decades that a pandemic was overdue. We even knew it was likely to come from China in the form of a zoonose. We got a real-time warning when we first knew of the deadly virus in Wuhan. Despite all these warnings, we did not act quickly enough and we are now dealing with an exponentially rising number of Covid-19 cases. Our lives have been de-railed. Next time, we need to be ready to pull up the drawbridge sooner. We also need to be prepared in terms of manufactured goods. Supermarkets need to have warehouse supplies. Deliveries "just in time" are inadequate. We need more medical and nursing staff. We cannot just wear our health workers into the ground. Hospital cleaners and hospital management need to be prepared and knowledgeable in disinfection protocols and practices. Government needs to have more of a role in the economic structure of the country, taking health into account as an absolute priority, even if it's not economically rational!
When this crisis has passed will we go back to "Business as Usual," and again flounder just as badly when Covid -21 or 23 arrives?

Jasmine Guffond’s Microphone Permission

(Editions Mego, 2020)
This spring, Vienna’s experimental label for “new punk computer music,” Editions Mego, releases an anxiety-inducing record by Australian-born, Berlin-based sound artist Jasmine Guffond. Aptly titled, Microphone Permission addresses the supposed consent users give to smartphones for algorithmic eavesdropping, sonifying the tools of digital surveillance in real time as they extract, store, and monitor one’s personal information. Drawing listeners into a paranoid, data-driven soundscape where influences of drone, minimal electronic, and noise music give way to ambient club, Guffond provides an experiential platform for these ubiquitous, invasive, and otherwise undetectable processes. This album was inspired by a scandal in 2018, when the score-keeping app for Spain’s top soccer division, La Liga, used Shazam-like algorithms to effectively listen in on fans via their smartphone microphones, rendering them unsuspecting spies for the purpose of detecting which sports bars were streaming the games without a permit. As mass corporate data-mining and government monitoring blur the distinction between private and public, Microphone Permission questions what space remains for the ungovernable and disruptive.
Having produced several projects over the past two years that translate data generated by surveillance systems—such as facial-recognition algorithms, social-media metadata, and Internet cookies—into sound, Guffond draws from these works for source material and starting points for her compositions. Her 2018 installation Sonic Profiles streamed metadata (usually only accessible to third-party developers) from the Twitter profiles of Trump, pop stars, and news outlets into a program called MaxMSP, generating individual sounds using triangle, sine, and saw waves for each reply or retweet in real time. Her public work Sonic Walker projected sonified data from pedestrian-counting sensors throughout the city of Melbourne. Her installations expose pervasive online surveillance and reveal the discrepancy between the web’s graphic interface and the sociopolitical implications of algorithmic data-capture in the background.
Composed from a mixture of intuitive programming and digitally rendered sound, the tracks in Microphone Permission are unwelcoming and austere. Siren-like tones bend against each other while staticky, glitching signals seem to cut in and out. Anonymous, muffled conversation is barely audible in a track titled “Forever Listening,” while a dissonant chord is repeatedly phased upward in a motion of systematic harvesting or uploading. Guffond’s sounds are microscopic, mimicking the delicate multiplicity of ones and zeros. An ever-present drone hovers throughout the album, carrying with it the notion of a ubiquitous entity, as compositions document and build into a dystopian realm, one ruled by algorithms and uninhabitable to humans. The final track, “An Utterly Dark Spot,” lifts its title from Jeremy Bentham’s text on the panopticon, a prison model where a ring of cells surrounds a central, elevated watchtower into which the prisoners cannot see, causing them to self-regulate and internalize the disciplined behavior that subjugates them.
However, this notion of “watching over” can be misleading when considering the nature of contemporary modes of digital surveillance, which, as Guffond notes, “has shifted from visceral seeing to a logic of automated data extraction.” Adequate understanding of where and how such tools are being deployed is scarce. Meanwhile, the individual has never been rendered so visible. As governments adopt smart-city platforms, facial-recognition systems, and predictive policing, websites record and respond to visitors’ search, post, and purchase histories. What can a listening mode of examination do among all of this?
Building relationships with other Kiwi agtech leaders and innovators was a surprising outcome for some attending the high-profile evokeAG event in Melbourne last month.
Among those was Priya Wallabh, strategic development manager for Ecolibrium Biologicals, who attending the event for a second year.
Ecolibrium Biologicals is a bio agritech company based in Pukekohe making sustainable pest control solutions. Wallabh says biological pesticides have been around for a while, but the aim of its products is to give growers the same experience as using a synthetic ag-chem.
“We know in order to compete with ag-chems and for growers to make that change they need to have the same experience in terms of efficacy, quick knock down, price points etc,” she told Rural News. “So, it gives them the same result, but in a more sustainable way.”
Ecolibrium has been in operation for about two years, but the founder Stephen Ford has been working on the technologies for many years.
Wallabh says she is lucky to have been able to go to evokeAG both years and found it valuable for the discussions, educational sessions and networking opportunities.
“A main reason I went was networking and integration into a larger ecosystem,” she says.
She came out with more leads than she expected.
“Networking with all the international delegates was great. But it was surprising the degree of networking we did with each other, with the almost 70 delegates from New Zealand.
“We are such a small country but most of us did not know each other’s companies or technologies even existed.
“Overseas people might know who we are, but within New Zealand we didn’t know each other so it was really important for us to connect. For instance why go all the way overseas to source out things which are just in your backyard? That was a valuable lesson for us.”
Start-up ag-tech companies go through the same challenges such as fundraising, entering markets etc.
“It is good to have people who share your experiences.”
A trip to Mildura for about 20 Kiwis after the Melbourne conference helped cement this. They visited a smartfarm, nursery, fertiliser facility and one of Australia’s largest wineries and almond processing plant.
It was great to see the ‘fruit bowl’ of Melbourne where the city gets most of its grapes and citrus,” she says.
“All farmers have their own challenges – I come from a farming family myself in Bombay Hills so I understand this first-hand - but Mildura has its own unique set.
“They are constantly battling dust storms, fires and droughts.
Wallabh says one thing that carries across farmers in every single region is resilience.
“They just keep on carrying on. But because they are resilient they are more open-minded to adopting new technologies to help combat those problems.”
Previously it had been traditional, intergeneration farming.
“But now farmers are more open minded because Mother Nature is delivering more challenges than they have solutions for,” she adds.
“The weather seasons are changing so cropping patterns change, you plant varieties suited to summer but now summer is drawing out into winter…
“In Aotearoa we may not have the same problems as Australia, but we share the bond and empathy of being growers and we can count on that happening here to some degree.
“This is a positive thing as these challenges are driving innovation and innovation drives opportunity.”
❱❱ The Melbourne event evokeAG was a two-day international event all about innovation in agriculture. It drew delegates from the entire agriculture network from across the Asia Pacific region and internationally.
❱❱ The New Zealand mission was led by Callaghan Innovation in partnership with NZTE, Agritech New Zealand, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) and the Ministry for Primary Industries.
