UAE airlines Emirates, Etihad resume limited passenger flights

Mon, 2020-04-06 14:08

DUBAI: UAE carriers Emirates Airline and Etihad Airways have resumed limited passenger flights two weeks after authorities grounded airlines as part of wider shutdowns to combat coronavirus.
The flights are open to foreign citizens who wish to leave the United Arab Emirates, but no incoming passengers are allowed. Foreign residents are banned from re-entering until at least mid-April.
Dubai’s Emirates, the largest carrier in the Middle East, said it operated a flight to London late Sunday and another to Frankfurt on Monday as part of its limited resumption.
It said in a statement that it plans to operate four flights a week to London and three weekly flights each to Frankfurt, Paris, Brussels and Zurich.
Wearing face masks and other protective gear at Dubai Airport on Monday, some 212 travelers to Frankfurt went through thermal screening before they boarded the aircraft.
Etihad said on its Twitter account that it resumed limited operation with a passenger flight to Seoul on Sunday.
The carrier said it will operate seven flights to Seoul, five to Singapore, six to Manila and two flights to Jakarta through April 21.
Last week Emirates said that cleaning and disinfection of the planes will take place after each flight.
UAE civil aviation authorities slapped a total ban on passenger flights two weeks ago at all the Gulf state’s airports.
But the two carriers on Thursday were issued approvals for limited flights to repatriate stranded foreigners.
The UAE has declared 2,076 coronavirus cases and 11 deaths.
It has imposed a sweeping lockdown, including the flight ban and closure of borders, shopping malls, entertainment centers and markets.
A 24-hour curfew was introduced on Thursday following a big jump in the number of cases in the UAE, where some 10 million people live.

Pacific countries strengthen border monitoring in response to African Swine Fever threat

Pacific countries strengthen border monitoring in response to African Swine Fever threat sophieg Tue, 03/31/2020 - 05:08

31 March 2020

Papua New Guinea recently announced that its multi-million pork industry is now under threat after African Swine Fever (ASF) was discovered in Mendi, in the Southern Highlands Province. It is believed that the disease was transported through carriers and possibly imported canned food. The virus was suspected when a large number of pigs in Mendi, 336, died in February. Samples were taken by an investigation team from NAQIA (National Agriculture and Quarantine Inspection Authority) and sent to Australia with results returning positive.

In response to this threat, the Pacific Community (SPC) has been working closely with leaders in the region to tighten biosecurity borders and undertake measures within the Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs) to avoid widespread ASF contamination.

ASF is a highly contagious viral disease of domestic and wild pigs that can cause serious economic and production loss and poses a big threat to the pork industry in the Pacific. Pigs are the most important domestic animals in the Pacific culture. Pork is a main principal meat for most PICTs therefore impacting the diets of many vulnerable people. ASF would lead to loss of income in the affected region which are engaged in pig farming. This will limit the sale of live pigs and pork production.

ASF does not directly affect humans, however, the virus is spread by direct contact between pigs which are infected, body fluids / tissues and indirectly from contact with contaminated objects such as vehicles, equipment, footwear or clothing and through feeding with garbage containing infected meat. Some species of ticks (vector) can transmit the virus. There is no effective vaccine available or effective treatment against ASF.

Some Pacific islands have already undertaken preventative measures as a result of risk assessments on the potential impact of ASF. The Samoa Ministry of Agriculture for example has banned the importation of all pork products from China as well as all countries with confirmed presence of ASF and the immediate suspension based on biosecurity measures, that also includes the recall of all pork products currently in stores across Samoa.

The disease is already a serious threat to farms in nearby Timor Leste. According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), “the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in Timor Leste announced the confirmation of ASF outbreak on 27 September 2019. The disease started on 9 September, a total of 100 outbreaks in smallholder pig farms has been recorded in the Capital City, Dili [reference1, reference2]. Additional ASF outbreaks reported in districts of Baucau, Covalima, Ermera, Lautein, Liquiça, Maliana, Mantutu, Manufahi, and Viqueque. A total of 1,600 pig have died as ASF spread to Timor-Leste [reference3, reference4, reference5].”

This shows the importance of Biosecurity and the constant need for stringent import risk assessments (IRA’s) on the importation of live animals as well as meat products. Also scientifically justified biosecurity interventions at pre-border, border and post-border to address and stop AFS as well as other exotic and zoonotic animal diseases from entering and spreading in our region. As we all know prevention is better than cure.

Australia sends away cruise ships

The largest maritime operation ever undertaken in Sydney Harbour was completed on Sunday with the successful restocking and refuelling of five cruise ships, Australian police said.

It was part of government efforts since mid-March to force vessels to leave the country’s waters to prevent any further spread of the coronavirus in Australia.

Cruise ship guests have so far accounted for almost 10 percent of Australia’s more than 5,500 infections. At least half a dozen other ships are believed to still be in Australian waters.

Meanwhile police launched a criminal investigation to probe whether the Ruby Princess vessel honestly reported the health conditions of its passengers before they disembarked in Sydney. Hundreds later tested positive and 10 died. Authorities have also warned Australians to be wary of imported COVID-19 home testing kits, saying border officials had intercepted several “faulty” consignments from China in recent weeks.

Pakistani authorities are searching for tens of thousands of worshippers who attended an Islamic gathering in Lahore last month amid fears they could be spreading COVID-19 across the country.

At least 154 attendees have tested positive following the Tablighi Jamaat event, which attracted 100,000 people and took place despite government requests to cancel in light of the worsening pandemic. About 2,500 people -- including 1,500 foreigners -- who had remained around the event site, which includes a mosque and sleeping quarters, have been placed in quarantine.

Priests delivered blessings from the back of trucks and motorised tricycles in the Philippines on Sunday, adapting the deeply Catholic nation’s traditions to the battle against the coronavirus pandemic.

Locals in their fourth week of lockdown in Manila lined up in front of their homes to watch the priests on Palm Sunday, the start of the week that culminates with the observance of Easter.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced a set of stimulus packages worth $8.5 billion to help the country’s economy ride out the damage inflicted by the pandemic.                (afp)

Business Wrap: Z Energy talks to bankers

Safe harbour for directors; Virgin Australia shuts NZ base; Z Energy cancels dividend and talks to banks; Serko bounces on cost cuts

Safe harbour: Company directors might be sleeping a little easier now that the Government has provided clarity around the issue of reckless trading or trading while insolvent. The new 'hibernation' regime would give companies the option to either freeze debts for six months and keep trading, or to freeze the whole company for a six-month period.

Do you mind? However, directors will require the agreement of half their creditors by both number and the value of debts owed before they can invoke the six-month 'hibernation' process

Reprieve: The two relevant clauses of the Companies Act to which the safe harbour regime applies are Sections 135 and 136, which deal respectively with a prohibition on 'reckless trading' and a duty on a company only to incur 'obligations' - debts, liabilities, contractual arrangements etc - that it believes it will be able to 'perform' as they fall due.

Not so pumped: Z Energy is battening down the hatches, cancelling its final dividend, suspending all non-essential capital spending and is in talks with its banks for more working capital flexibility. Advising of a further narrowing in its profit guidance, it said on Friday its EBITDA for the March year just ended would fall between $355 million and $365 million, compared with the $350 million to $385 million signalled in December.

Third time around: It is the company’s third cut to its guidance within six months after previously lowering its forecast from a $390-$430 million range in September last year.

Slimming down: Shares in travel software company Serko rose 10.5 percent on Friday after the company said it would cut costs to shore up its financial position in the next 12 months. With $42 million in cash reserves on its balance sheet, it said it has plenty of liquidity and will not be impacted by travel cancellations as a result of COVID-19.

The company plans to use the current travel shutdown to further refine and develop its technology and will purse Government business subsidy programs in New Zealand, Australia and the United States to support employee salary costs. Serko shares have fallen 58 percent this year.

Exiting: Tourism Holdings (THL) is to exit its Togo joint venture with American manufacturer of recreational vehicles Thor Industries and instead focus on a digital strategy in both New Zealand and Australia. The deal would see THL diluted down to a 26.5 percent minority shareholder of Togo, though it would get exclusive rights to fleet management and booking systems and to the peer-to-peer Mighway platform in Australia and New Zealand.

The deal: Thor will pay Tourism Holdings US$6 million and has a four-year option to buy out the remaining stake for US$20m. Tourism Holdings is also entitled to an annual dividend of US$600,000 for four years. THL shares are down 72 percent this year.

Shutting up shop: Having announced the permanent closure of its New Zealand base a fortnight ago, Virgin Australia Airlines has issued redundancy notices to 550 flight and cabin crew staff. The move has been criticised by the E tu union who say the company should have applied for the wage subsidy and done more to ensure the continuity of employment and pay for their workers.

The company would temporarily stand-down around 8,000 of its 10,000 strong workforce after sharply reducing capacity since the start of the lockdown.

Near empty planes: Hong Kong based airline Cathay Pacific is used to carrying about 100,000 daily passengers. On one day last week it flew just 582 passengers. The airline says the outlook for the global travel industry is darkening and "intensifying" financial ramifications for its business. Having already slashed its passenger capacity for April and May by 96 percent the airline says it is preparing to make further cuts

Just five flights: Cathay says it will now operate only two flights a week in April to four long-haul destinations, including London, Los Angeles, Vancouver and Sydney along with three weekly regional flights to eight cities, including Tokyo, Manila and Singapore.

Shocker: Non-farm payrolls in the U.S. dropped by 701,000 in March, according to Labour Department figures released Friday that only begin to show the economic damage wrought by the coronavirus crisis. It was the first decline in payrolls since September 2010 and came close to the May 2009 financial crisis peak of 800,000. Some two-thirds of the drop came in the hospitality industry, particularly bars and restaurants forced to close during the economic shutdown. The household survey, which asks individual residences about their employment situation, showed a plunge of nearly 3 million jobs.

It's only just begun: The report however fails to capture the full extent of the damage from the virus because of government methodology as its reference period was for the week ending March 12, which came just as the nation began its near shutdown. April data is expected to show the U.S. economy lost somewhere between 10 and 15 million jobs

Embarrassing: For a country that boasts some of the world’s leading technology companies and smartest minds, the problem of getting stimulus funding into the accounts of desperate small businesses in the U.S. is proving to be a challenge. Many customers complained of websites crashing on the first day and being required to have an existing loan with banks before they could apply. Small businesses, which employ nearly half of America’s private-sector workers, are haemorrhaging, and the loans are meant to help them retain employees or rehire those they let go because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Bank of America said it had received loan applications on the first day of the program totaling more than $US22 billion. Many borrowers are worried that the $US350 billion in federal funding could run out in a matter of weeks.

$30b in a week: By contrast, Switzerland unveiled its SFr20bn ($NZ40bn) package of emergency loans to support small businesses a fortnight ago. In its first week it disbursed more than SFr15bn to 76,034 businesses. Businesses complete a simple application online and the funds are deposited within 24 hours. Very Swiss!
