Will Airbnb guests want to stay in chain hotels instead after COVID-19?

COVID-19 has hit the economy so hard that it could take three years for the U.S. to recover.

Most states have paused non-essential businesses and put a stay-at-home order in place, where restaurants can only offer curbside pick-up or delivery service. Nobody goes out.

Recently, the U.S. State Department issued a “Level 4” travel advisory for all international travel. As of April 5, seven of the 48 contiguous states, including Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Delaware, and Nevada, plus Alaska and Hawaii, require almost all incoming travelers to self-quarantine for 14 days. Nobody travels.

Hotel indicators record unprecedented lows

The travel and hospitality industry has been hit the hardest, with mass layoffs and record-low key performance indicators (KPIs). According to STR’s lodging report for the week ending on March 28, the industry’s KPIs hit “unprecedented lows.” STR is the leading data analytics provider for the lodging industry. For the week of March 22 to 28:

  • Occupancy: 22.6%, a minus 67.5% change from the same period of last year (March 24 to 30, 2019)
  • Average daily rate (ADR): $79.92, a minus 39.4 percent change
  • Revenue per available room (RevPAR): $18.05, a minus 80.3% change
  • The industry is expected to see the worst occupancy in 2020 on record

Hotel chains are closing en masse. The top 25 markets in the U.S., where usually have many Airbnb listings, reported even lower KPIs than the national average:

  • Occupancy: 19.6%, a minus 74.6% change
  • ADR: $89.71, a minus 43.9% change
  • RevPAR: $17.60, a minus 85.7% change.

Airbnb, too, is not doing well

Airbnb just lowered its internal valuation to $26 billion in April, down from $31 billion in the company’s previous valuation. According to, a tech firm that collects and provides short-term residential rental data:

  • The global Airbnb supply remained relatively little change.
  • The weekly Airbnb revenue for New York City dropped from $12.5 million in the week of Jan. 5 to $6 million in the week of March 15, a minus 52% change.
  • The weekly revenue for San Francisco dropped from $4.4 million in the week of Jan. 5 to $1.8 million in the week of March 15, a minus 59% change.

Keep in mind that on March 15, neither San Francisco nor New York City had placed the stay-at-home order yet.

Comparing to the data for Beijing, a place with a lockdown order earlier, bookings dropped from 40,508 in the week of January 5 to 1,655 in the week of March 1. That was a 96% drop.

Looking at the yearly trend (March 2020 vs. March 2019), another report reveals some new trends:

  • Rural areas reported the most significant yearly gains in the month at $1,320 million, a $280 increase from the previous year.
  • Suburban areas saw growth from $294 million to $345 million.
  • On the contrary, the revenue in urban markets dropped from $706 million to $631 million.

It is important to note that such a yearly trend was released on March 23, 2020. It is likely that the coronavirus outbreak has stronger negative impacts on urban markets, in which more confirmed infected cases were reported in large metropolitan areas. It is also plausible that people might choose to stay outside of urban areas before the stay-at-home order takes effect.

Will today’s Airbnb guests want to stay in chain hotels instead when the pandemic is over?

It will probably take a long time before the industry bounce back to the 2019 peak even after the pandemic is over. When people start traveling again, however, will chain hotels win some Airbnb guests back?

Referring to the pros of cons of staying in a hotel vs. an Airbnb facility, hotels appear to be a winner. For example,

Let’s hope the worst of the pandemic will end soon. Then, everything will go back to normal.

When people begin traveling again, will chain hotels become a more attractive option for the travelers who usually stay at Airbnb?

COVID-19 leads to rapid e-learning growth in K-12 education

According to Education Week, the spread of the coronavirus has forced the closure of at least 124,000 K-12 schools across the country, and learning has gone virtual.

Now, all schools will remain closed for extended periods to combat the spread of the virus. 46 states; Washington, D.C.; Puerto Rico; and the Bureau of Indian Education have canceled testing for the 2019-2020 school year. One state has postponed testing, while four states are currently seeking a waiver to do so.

St. Louis' public education system, like others, is gearing up for more than COVID-19 — the long break from school if the quarantine extends into the summer. Teachers and administrators are working to make sure that students do not lose academic progress made during the school year. Parents are joining to partner with teachers and prepare students for virtual learning.

In the last few years, we have witnessed heated debates about teacher shortages and how to tackle them. There has now been something of a shift in that area, and we see a rising demand for qualified teachers who are proficient in virtual teaching.

While K-12 educators are trying to shift to e-learning in record time and continue teaching, they, along with students, are receiving a lot of help from the K-12 tech industry. Major education technology companies are making their paid services free through the rest of the school year and are even adding premium features to those. Adobe, Discovery Education, Follett, Girls Who Code, Google, Otus, Math Nation, Microsoft, and K12 Inc., are some of the firms included in this group.

K12 Inc. recently announced that it would be offering free resources for families at home with their children during the school year. The 6,000 teachers they employ will work with local and state officials for virtual schooling needs.

They will also ensure that the full-time online public schools and programs they serve will remain operational during this time. Their virtual education options over the summer for all will be extended, too. Their efforts will keep over 120,000 students nationwide in school without disruption. Their free sharing of their extensive experience in virtual education will act as valuable aid during these uncertain times.

A coalition of the nation's large urban public school districts, the Council of the Great City Schools, touched upon the challenges urban schools are facing due to the coronavirus outbreak. While most urban schools with resources have coped well, and started developing plans and sharing strategies early on, rural and low-income areas haven't fared as well. The gap that educators have tried hard to bridge may grow larger yet, and that is a huge concern for the nation.

There is also a concern about incomplete learning when students go back to school next fall. This is primarily a worry with struggling learners, students with disabilities, the homeless, and English-learners. Some school districts have transitioned well to virtual learning; some are distributing hard copies of lessons while many others are using a combination of the two methods. States like South Carolina will rely on Google classrooms for their e-learning plans.

California is determined to address the issues of equity and access instead of blindly plunging into e-learning. The state’s authorities and educators have entered into a partnership with public television to allow every student to continue learning — even students who don't have an internet connection at home.

America's food heroes show up for work despite coronavirus crisis

The people who grow, process and keep food stocked on shelves are doing heroic work in these conditions, often for bottom-barrel pay.

Why it matters: Millions of Americans don't have the luxury of working from home, and it's essential that food workers keep working so we can keep eating.

  • Undocumented immigrants are a big share of America's farm labor workforce, particularly for fruits and vegetables.
  • They often work and live in conditions that make social distancing difficult, and they rarely have good health care access or paid sick leave. They are also ineligible for the bailout protections that recently passed.
  • “You can’t pick strawberries over Zoom," Lucas Zucker, a workers' advocate, told the L.A. Times.

In the food processing world:

  • Grand Island, Nebraska: 10 workers have tested positive at a beef packing plant. (Grand Island Independent)
  • Columbus Junction, Iowa: Hog slaughterhouse closed after 24 workers tested positive. (Reuters)
  • Pennsylvania: Empire Kosher Poultry, the biggest kosher chicken supplier in America, temporarily closed after some workers tested positive. (WSJ)
  • Moultrie, Georgia: Sanderson Farms, a chicken company, reduced its staffing as a precautionary move. (WSJ)

And at grocery stores: At least four workers nationwide have died from the virus, NBC News reports.

  • Customers often fail to keep 6 feet of distance and often don't wear gloves and masks, one grocery store worker told the AP.
  • “Most of us are terrified,” he said.

The bottom line: “I know that we are doing important work that is feeding the rest of the country," one worker told BuzzFeed News.

  • "We are essential workers that this country needs."

Special report: Health care workers vs. the coronavirus

All-Mail Vote: Great for Lawyers, Awful for Election Integrity

The phrase "Never let a crisis go to waste" has resurfaced recently. President Obama's chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, a product of the Chicago political machine, most famously gave Democrats this advice amid the financial crisis of 2008 to push through a laundry list of the progressive agenda. We are seeing the same thing as part of Democrats' response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This time around, one of the top items on Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-Calif.) list is vote by mail. Democrats for years have been looking for ways to weaken voter laws. They claim it will make it easier for folks to vote....

COVID-19: A resilient Vancouver theatre community faces the unknown

Popular Stanley Park event Theatre Under the Stars has cancelled their 2020 summer shows because of coronavirus.

While nearly everyone is suffering right now, Vancouver’s theatre workers have taken a particularly hard hit because of coronavirus closures.

Most are freelancers with little or no financial fallback. With every theatre company shut down, they face a spring and summer of cancelled or postponed shows, and a future full of unknowns when — fingers crossed — theatres open again.

Most companies will find ways to survive and audiences will come back.

“The social value of cultural work tends to get lost in the panicked conversations about the economy,” Canadian Actors’ Equity president Scott Bellis told Postmedia, as he awaits the fate of the run of Midsummer Night’s Dream he’s set to direct for Bard on the Beach this summer.

The fate of the Bard on the Beach festival was still to be decided on March 27.

Theatre Under the Stars has cancelled their summer shows. Announcements about Bard and South Asian Arts’ Monsoon Festival are pending. Still, the theatre community remains hopeful, positive and caring.

The curtains came down on the Arts Club in the middle of its season. The Lower Mainland’s theatrical flagship had to close two productions and postpone five others. Those seven shows represent half its earned revenue for the year, about 40 per cent of its $16 million budget.

Ashlie Corcoran is artistic director of the Arts Club Theatre Company.

Artistic director Ashlie Corcoran agonizes over the human cost: The 126 Arts Club staff and technicians laid off, and the salaries lost by more than 100 artists involved in those shows.

“As the leader of the company, I feel responsible.”

Corcoran has high praise for the Arts Club family in these uncertain times.

“To have a career in this fragile industry, you have to be resilient. Our people have been cooperative and understanding. And our audience has been very patient as we try to figure out what comes next.”

At the other end of the spectrum, Touchstone Theatre, with only three employees, had one show remaining. They rescheduled Adam Grant Warren’s new play, Lights, for the fall at the Firehall. Like every other company with work in progress, they paid their artists’ fees, at least in part.

They also postponed this year’s Lawyer Show, a major fundraiser for them and Carousel Theatre. That hurts.

“We may have to produce less and the three of us work more,” says Touchstone’s artistic director Roy Surette.

“But I’m heartbroken for so many people who were either starting rehearsals or in tech.”

Actor Zahf Paroo was one of them, losing four weeks’ pay when the Arts Club’s Carried Away on the Crest of a Wave shut down during rehearsals at the Stanley. His teaching at GO Studios, private coaching and weekend bartending gigs also disappeared.

Married with a two-year-old son, Paroo counts himself lucky. His wife Mandy’s work from home and their savings pay the rent.

“What we have to deal with, we’ll deal with. At least I get to hang out with my kid every day. It’s the people who live alone that I worry about.”

Award-winning costume designer Carmen Alatorre also sees a bright side.

“It’s nice to have a chance to be at home, walking my dog.”

Alatorre’s gig with Neworld Theatre’s The Boy in the Moon was cancelled. She was also designing costumes for Chicago Shakespeare Festival’s As You Like It (cancelled), and Bard’s Paradise Lost (still up in the air).

Alatorre is sanguine about her prospects if things return to something like normal.

“It’s not sustainable to keep living paycheque to paycheque. I’m thinking about getting some kind of permanent part-time job to go along with my theatre work.”

Actor/playwright Meghan Gardiner got paid for only two weeks’ work when The Boy in the Moon went down. A six-week tour of her play Love Bomb was also scrubbed, so no royalties.

Actor Todd Thomson was performing in the Arts Club’s The Wedding Party, when it was forced to close a week before the end of its run in early March.

Gardiner and actor husband Todd Thomson have a seven-year-old and a mortgage. Performing in The Wedding Party, Thomson got paid  when the Arts Club closed it a week early , but his five days’ film work booked for April were cancelled.

“We’re triaging our daily existence,” says Gardiner.

“Health comes first, then the immediate needs of our child. Only then do we worry about money. As artists, we’ve been in lots of situations before with little or no work. What’s scary is there’s no chance of work right now no matter how hard you hustle. But artists are creative. We’ll come back.”

Erotic ancient Egyptian spell beats Tinder by calling on ghosts to get a date

1p>What did people do to get a certain someone’s attention thousands of years before you could swipe left or right?

An 1,800 year-old Egyptian papyrus currently being translated has revealed what a team of Egyptologists, led by Robert Ritner of the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago, are calling an erotic binding spell. The spell is written in the ancient Egyptian Demotic script (not the hieroglyphs you’d probably expect). It’s basically a séance written on papyrus on behalf of a woman named Taromeway, calling upon a spirit to pretty much harass the object of her desire, Kephalas. The idea is for the haunting to continue until Kephalas becomes so overtaken with lust that he just can’t take it anymore.

“The image of a helpless, 'inflamed' lover continues in late Egyptian magic, and [this] papyrus exemplifies the characterization of such spells as subjugation rites with an emphasis on sexual domination rather than romantic love,” says a study recently published on the find in the Oriental Institute journal GöttinGer Miszellen. It also explains why the drawing of a naked Kephalas facing the jackal-headed god Anubis appears to have certain parts of his anatomy grossly enlarged. NSFW as this is, it is meant to emphasize physical desire for Taromeway.

What is so unique about this particular spell is that it was cast for a woman pursuing a man instead of vice versa. Most erotic binding spells in Ancient Egypt were used by men to ensnare the women they wanted.  Kephalas must have had no idea what he was in for. The spell not only calls up on what is translated as “the noble spirit of the man of the necropolis” to find this guy and “give him anxiety at midday, evening and all the time” until he succumbs to Taromeway, but also suggests that he trek across the constellation of Ursa Major to seek her out.

That might seem like asking too much in the name of love, but as the spell says, Kephalas will be traversing space, “wandering after [Taromeway] while there is no woman on Earth whom he desires, as he madly pursues her.” Ursa Major was chosen for a reason. The ancient Egyptians had an advanced knowledge of astronomy, and they knew that constellation never dipped below the horizon.

As if that wasn’t enough, Anubis, better known as the god of embalming who brought mummification to the ancient Egyptians, shoots Kephalas with an arrow like a much more imposing version of Cupid. The spell ends by ultimately begging for him to “give his heart [to] Taromeway”.

Can you imagine being dragged around the universe because someone wants you so badly they don’t care whether you feel the same way? Sex spells might not need wifi, but using your smartphone to swipe is so much easier.
